BMC scraps plan to get beach robots from Turkiye
Mumbai: Following widespread criticism, BMC has scrapped its plan to procure robotic lifebuoys from Turkiye to enhance safety at six beaches amid calls to boycott the country's goods over its support to Islamabad during tension between India and Pakistan.
A senior official said the civic body will float fresh tenders.
The remotely operated, motorised flotation devices were meant to assist lifeguards in reaching those drowning off Girgaum Chowpatty, Dadar Shivaji Park, Juhu, Versova, Aksa and Gorai beaches. Each machine comes equipped with dual water jets and rechargeable batteries of 10,000mAh, with a load-bearing capacity of up to 200kg. It can travel up to 800m into the sea at 18kmph and remain operational for an hour.
BJP and Shiv Sena leaders had criticised the procurement deal, questioning why a foreign-made system was chosen over domestic alternatives, and had threatened protests. In response, BMC decided to cancel it. Former BJP corporator Bhalchandra Shirsat, who was among those who opposed the deal, pointed to Turkiye's military and diplomatic backing of Pakistan post Operation Sindoor.

Shashi Tharoor, leader of the Indian delegation, appeared to have anticipated the clash, almost with a sense of relish, noting as the team arrived in Washington DC that the Pakistanis would also be there at the same time "so there's going to be perhaps an increase in interest because there are two duelling delegations in the same city." But Bhutto was down for the count even before got to Washington when he was ambushed at the UN as he tried to enlist sympathetic journalists with planted questions aimed at amplifying Pakistan's narrative about India's treatment of Muslims. Embarrassingly for him, a reporter called him out saying he had watched the briefings on both sides and "as far as I recall, there were Muslim Indian military officers who were conducting the briefings on the Indian side. " Bhutto also claimed that Pakistan radars had locked into 20 Indian jets on the night of May 7 and "If we wanted, we could've taken down all 20," but Pakistan showed restraint and"only 6 were shot down — the ones that launched strikes." He also rolled out the familiar trope about Pakistan being a "victim of terrorism" -- in a city where Pakistani nationals Ramzi Yousuf and Khalid Shaikh Mohammed launched attacks on the World Trade Center in 1993 and 2001. The chatters have also grown on social media with people claiming that the NCP-NCPSP merger could take place in June itself and thus, the BJP-led NDA's number in the Lok Sabha may go beyond the 300 mark. Notably, the NDA has 293 seats in the Lok Sabha and if the NCPSP joins the alliance, then its tally will go to 301 with the eight seats of Shara Pawar's party. NCP-SP's merger or joining of the NDA will deal a big jolt to the Maha Vikas Aghadi in Maharashtra where the Congress and Shiv Sena-UBT are largely dependent on the NCP-SP in regions like Western Maharashtra and Marathawada.
