Ex-UFC champions Cain Velasquez ready to be sentenced for attempted murder

Express Tribune24-03-2025

Three years after his arrest on attempted murder and other charges, former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez is set to receive his sentence Monday at the Santa Clara County Hall of Justice in San Jose.
Velasquez, who pleaded no contest in August 2023, has accepted responsibility for his actions in the 2022 shooting incident and expressed a willingness to face the consequences.
Speaking on the Kyle Kingsbury Podcast, Velasquez acknowledged his wrongdoing.
'We cannot put the law in our own hands,' he said. 'I know what I did was very dangerous—not just to those involved, but to innocent people. I understand that, and I'm willing to do whatever the court decides is correct.'
Velasquez was arrested in February 2022 after he pursued a vehicle carrying Harry Goularte, a man accused of molesting his then 4-year-old son. During a high-speed chase, Velasquez fired multiple shots at the car, striking Goularte's stepfather, Paul Bender, in the arm.
Reflecting on his actions, Velasquez admitted he made the wrong decision.
'I don't think I can ever fully pay it back, but I can learn from my mistakes and help others,' he said. 'Trust your kids. Have open communication with them. Teach them what is appropriate and what isn't so they can always come to you.'
Despite the traumatic circumstances, Velasquez said he harbors no resentment toward Goularte's family, including his mother, Patricia Goularte, who ran the daycare where the alleged abuse occurred.
'I can't hold hate for them,' Velasquez said. 'I have to move on and give love to my kids and the people around me. I've forgiven them, and I wish them healing in whatever way they need.'
Initially pleading not guilty, Velasquez changed his plea to no contest last August, signaling a likely agreement between the prosecution and defense. The terms of that agreement may be revealed during Monday's hearing.
No matter the outcome, Velasquez said his focus remains on his family and his personal growth.
'My kids are amazing,' he said. 'This will not define them. They are meant for great things, and I'm just blessed to live this life with them.'
Meanwhile, Goularte, who faces one felony charge of lewd acts with a minor, is set for trial on June 2. He has pleaded not guilty.

BJ Penn claims family murdered, replaced by imposters in disturbing posts

Former UFC champion B.J. Penn has made a series of alarming social media posts, claiming his family members have been murdered and replaced by imposters. The Hall of Famer urged Hawaii police to investigate, warning of a conspiracy targeting him and his property. B.J. Penn, a former two-division UFC champion and Hall of Fame inductee, posted a series of concerning messages on Instagram alleging his mother and brothers were murdered and replaced by imposters. In a direct plea to the Hilo Police Department, Penn named his mother Lorraine Shin and brothers Jay Dee, Reagan, and Kalani Mamazuka as victims, asking law enforcement to intervene. 'Hilo Police Department I need your help. My mother… my brothers… we're all murdered and I need you to investigate,' wrote Penn. He continued to share his fears in multiple posts, stating that individuals he believes to be imposters are attempting to 'steal everything from his family.' In one post, Penn expressed fear of legal consequences if he acts against these individuals, noting, 'If I harm any of these people… I go to jail… If they harm me, nothing will happen to them.' Penn also called on former training partners and police officers within the martial arts community to assist, asking, 'Are you guys gonna help me?' The 45-year-old last competed in the UFC in 2019, suffering a loss to Clay Guida at UFC 237. He was released from the promotion shortly after, having ended his career with seven straight defeats. Despite a difficult final stretch in the Octagon, Penn remains a revered figure in MMA history, known for his lightweight and welterweight title reigns. Authorities have not publicly commented on Penn's allegations. Concerns are growing online regarding his mental well-being as the situation develops.

Yair Rodriguez, Diego Lopes almost come to blows at UFC 314 presser

Tensions boiled over between Diego Lopes and Yair Rodriguez at Thursday's UFC 314 pre-fight press conference in Miami, where both featherweight contenders hurled accusations and insults before being separated by security. The confrontation cast a shadow over Saturday's pay-per-view at the Kaseya Center, where Lopes challenges Alexander Volkanovski for the vacant title and Rodriguez faces Patricio Freire. The UFC 314 press event spiralled into chaos after a reporter asked Diego Lopes if he would defend the title against Yair Rodriguez at Noche UFC in Guadalajara on 13 September, if victorious this weekend. 'How many consecutive losses does he have?' Lopes said. 'How many? Two? That's not enough (for a title fight).' Rodriguez immediately shot back with an explosive accusation. 'P*ssy. Didn't you jump Marco (Beltran) between you and your team? Didn't you jump Marco with your team? Yes or no?' Rodriguez said. 'I've been waiting for the right moment to tell you this to your fcking face. You're going to pay for Marco.' Security stepped in as both fighters stood up and exchanged threats, visibly agitated. The altercation stems from a longstanding incident dating back to 2019, when Lopes submitted former UFC fighter Marco Beltran in Monterrey, Mexico, to win the LUX featherweight title. Rodriguez claims Lopes and his team assaulted Beltran during that period — an accusation Lopes has denied. Instead, Lopes pointed the finger back at Rodriguez during the press conference, accusing him of threatening a female member of his camp. 'Talk about my team, and the same thing that happen to him will happen to you,' Lopes shouted. 'You threatened her, you threatened her. You threatened a girl, and you're going to pay.' Rodriguez responded, 'Don't twist up words.' There's no confirmed timeline or corroboration of either fighter's claims. However, the exchange has added fuel to an already tense fight week. While Lopes prepares for the biggest bout of his career against Volkanovski, Rodriguez will square off with former Bellator two-division champion Patricio 'Pitbull' Freire. Both fights take place on the UFC 314 main card Saturday night.
