Koovagam festival celebrates transgender identity and the legend of aravan

, which, over 18 days, commemorates the epic battle between the Pandavas and Kauravas. Thousands of transgender people come together at the temple dedicated to Koothandavar (Aravan), the son of Arjuna.On Tuesday, the penultimate day, devotees donned elaborate costumes, wore their favourite jewellery, and queued up at the temple to have their thalis tied, marking their symbolic marriage.
On Wednesday, the final day of the festival, devotees broke their thalis and bangles, wiped off their sindoor, and mourned the sacrifice of their husband, Koothandavar, before taking a holy dip in the lake.A beauty contest was also held as part of the festival.
"I'm fortunate to have been accepted by my parents, and it's something I hope for others as well," says S Renuga, crowned Miss Koovagam 2025. On Monday, they introduced their characters; Ayushmann Khurrana, Rashmika Mandanna, Paresh Rawal and Nawazuddin Siddiqui's first with unveiling the first official posters of the much-awaited Hindi film, the makers also announced that a major update, titled 'The World of Thama', will be revealed on August 19 at 11:11 to be a vampire comedy, 'Thama' is directed by Aditya Sarpotdar and forms part of Maddock Films' grand horror-comedy franchise. Sharing Ayushmann Khurrana's official look, the makers wrote, 'Presenting Ayushmann Khurrana as Alok – Insaaniyat ki aakhri umeed. The World of Thama drops tomorrow at 11:11 am. This Diwali, the universe gives us a bloody love story in cinemas worldwide – #Thama (sic).' Nawazuddin Siddiqui takes on the role of the eerie Yakshasan – Andhere ka Badshah, reportedly portraying a vampire with a shadowy past. Meanwhile, Paresh Rawal will be seen as Mr Ram Bajaj Goyal – Jo hamesha comedy mein tragedy dhoondhte hain. 'Thama', inspired by the name Ashwatthama—the immortal warrior from the Mahabharata—is positioned as a genre-bending blend of comedy, horror, and story follows a historian, played by Ayushmann, who sets out to trace the mythological roots of vampirism in Indian folklore. Draupadi's Mahabharata will be the highlight of Odissi festival, Naman

The 14th edition of Naman — an annual Odissi dance festival, curated and presented by Nrityantar Academy of Performing Arts, Bengaluru — will be held on August 24 (5 p.m.) at ADA Rangamandira at 5 p.m. Since its inception in 2010, Naman has been pay tribute to legendary gurus and practitioners of Odissi. 'Naman', means 'salutation', and the event brings together varied styles and schools of Odissi, offering a platform for traditional style and contemporary interpretations of the dance, says Madhulita Mohapatra, dancer-choreographer and founder of Nrityantar. This year's line-up includesDraupadi's Mahabharata, choreographed by Madhulita, will be presented by Nrityantar. 'This is an emotionally-layered work that re-imagines Mahabharata through the eyes of Draupadi, exploring themes of justice, duty, dignity, resilience and the moral dilemmas that continue to speak to us today,' explains Madhulita. Music is by Rupak Kumar Parida, rhythm by Dhaneswar Swain and poetic contributions by Ashtavadhani Balachandra Bhat (Sanskrit) and Kedar Mishra (Odia). This will be followed by a solo Odissi recital by Gajendra Panda — a leading exponent of Guru Debaprasad Das style of Odissi and the festival concludes with a performance by the Soor Mandir Dance Ensemble from Cuttack, directed by Jyotsna Sahoo. The festival is open to all.
