Rescuers search for missing in Texas floods as more storms loom: Live updates
At least 81 people have died in the flooding since Friday, including at least 28 children in Kerr County alone – the epicenter of the deadly flash floods that came as many were still sleeping, officials said.
Across the state, 41 known people remained unaccounted for, said Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, noting that the number of missing people is expected to be higher as thousands were in the Texas Hill Country celebrating Independence Day weekend when the floods broke out.
The missing include 10 children and a counselor from Camp Mystic, a beloved all girls Christian camp near the Guadalupe River, which became a mass torrent of water as it surged over 26 feet in less than an hour on Friday.
As rescuers search for people by air, land and water, officials are warning those in central Texas that the flooding threat is not over.
Abbott on Sunday said at a news conference that expected storms early in the week "pose life-threatening danger," especially in parts of the state such as Kerrville that have been inundated with heavy rain.
'If you're in any of those regions, you need to realize, for one, you're in an area that is already saturated with water,' he said. "When more water comes down, it could lead to rapid flash flooding events."
Flood watch in effect across central Texas as rescues continue
The National Weather Service extended a flood watch through 7 p.m. local time as downpours were expected through Monday, including in hard-hit parts of the state.
Federal forecasters said it's difficult to pinpoint exact locations where the heaviest rain will fall, noting that an uptick in intensity is possible over the Hill Country, where the worst of deadly floods have occurred.
Widespread rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches were expected, forecasters said, warning that some areas could receive 10 inches of rain.
"The thunderstorms should become more organized and move westward possibly across the flood-ravaged portion of Texas during the day today," the weather service said Monday.
Trump plans to visit Texas after deadly floods
Trump said he expects to visit Texas later this week after catastrophic flooding caused extensive death and destruction in the state.
"Probably on Friday," Trump told reporters on Sunday when asked about visiting the state. "We wanted to leave a little time. I would've done it today, but we'd just be in their way."
Earlier on Sunday, Trump signed a major disaster declaration for hard-hit Kerr County, unlocking federal funding for first responders on the ground and offering FEMA assistance to victims of the flooding.

Effingham Emergency Management Agency talks do's and don'ts of flash flooding
It has been almost one month since floodwaters swept through Kerr County Texas killing at least 135 people, including at least 36 young girls who were visiting Camp Mystic, a private Christian camp. The height from the water in the Guadalupe River rose from less than 12 inches to more than 30 feet. 'This type of flooding is dangerous because sudden and intense rainfall can sweep away objects and cause significant damage,' said Shanna Smith, deputy director for Effingham Emergency Management Agency. 'The key characteristic of flash flooding is its speed. The water level rises quickly, often within minutes to a few hours after the heavy rain begins. The fast-moving water in a flash flood can be extremely powerful, capable of carrying away vehicles, debris, and even large rocks.' In August 2024, Tropical Storm Debby left many areas across the region flooded, roads completely washed away and homes and properties damaged. The storm hammered Southeast Georgia for two days, dropping 11.5-13 inches of rain on Effingham County. Rincon had 13.72 inches of rainfall during that span, the highest recorded in Georgia. Springfield (12.12 inches), Marlow (11.59 inches), a second Rincon station (10.51 inches) and Port Wentworth (10.20 inches) all reached 10 inches or more as of Thursday morning. Savannah received 10.92 inches during that time, while Vernonburg (11.03 inches), Skidaway Island (10.99 inches) and Savannah International Airport (10.53 inches) each recorded double digit rainfall totals. Screven County received several heavy rainfall totals, with Rocky Ford (13.22 inches) and Newington (11.87 inches) notching double-digit recordings. Hurricane Helene brought about challenges in other ways. At the height of the storm, some 300 roads throughout the state were impassable or blocked. The National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration expects there to be 13-19 storms this year. Smith said flash flooding typically happens in a 3 to 6-hour window but it is the pace of the water that can be troubling – and in some cases, deadly. EEMA provided a list of suggestions on how to respond in a flash flood situation: Before a flash flood: Move to higher ground immediately — don't wait. If you're outdoors or in a low-lying area, head to the highest point you can safely reach. If you're in a building, go to the upper floors (but avoid attics without escape and never go to the basement). Stay informed. Monitor weather forecasts, alerts, and warnings from reliable sources like the National Weather Service or local authorities. Have an emergency plan. Know your evacuation routes and make sure all family members are familiar with them. Prepare an emergency kit. Include food, water, medications, flashlight, batteries, important documents and first-aid supplies. Move to higher ground if you live in a flood-prone area, especially during heavy rains. During a flood: Never try to walk, swim, or drive through floodwaters. Just six inches of moving water can knock a person over and two feet of water can sweep away most cars. Evacuate immediately if advised to do so. Stay on high ground and avoid low-lying areas. Keep listening to local emergency services via battery-powered radio or your phone (if service is available). Follow evacuation routes; don't take shortcuts. After a Flash Flood Stay away from floodwaters – they can be contaminated or electrically charged. Inspect your home safely – check for structural damage before entering. Report downed power lines, gas leaks or other hazards to authorities. Document damages with photos for insurance claims.
