‘Raze illegal structures, prevent fires'
The Oct 2015 blaze at Hotel City Kinara in Kurla revealed glaring fire safety lapses: Gas pipes crisscrossed the eatery, cylinders were stored on a mezzanine balcony, staircases were dangerously narrow, and the mezzanine itself was illegal. Similarly, the Dec 2017 fire at Kamala Mills that claimed 14 lives at the 1 Above restaurant spread rapidly due to a highly combustible, unauthorised thatched roof—an addition for which no permissions was granted.
The BMC had suspended 5 officials after the blaze.
Niranjan Shetty, chairman of Ahar (Association of Hotels and Restaurants), said, "Authorised eateries largely comply with fire safety norms, as they know non-compliance invites strict action. But there's a clear trend—most fire incidents involve unauthorised structures or illegal extensions. That's where enforcement needs to tighten."
The inquiry into the recent fire at a Bandra mall pointed out that the firefighting system was manual, not automatic, highlighting gaps in safety infrastructure in commercial spaces.
Nicholas Almeida of Watchdog Foundation said after the Kinara fire, the BMC cracked down on illegal eateries and roadside cooking. "But a decade later, open cooking continues. Ward level officials can act against this."tnn

Mumbai police registers first FIR in A Ward for feeding pigeons at historic Kabutarkhana near GPO
The Mumbai police on Tuesday registered an FIR against a person for feeding pigeons at the century-old Kabutarkhana (feeding spot) near the General Post Office (GPO) building at Fort — the first case in the city's A ward. According to the records, the incident was reported around 11.30 am last Friday when a 57-year-old arrived at the Kabutarkhana with a bag of grains to feed the pigeons. Situated at Mint Toad near the GPO building, the Fort pigeon feeding spot is the oldest Kabutarkhana of Mumbai. In 1923, Jain merchant Devidas Kothari established the kabutarkhana at the site, which also houses a pyau. A senior official of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) confirmed that this is the first case registered against pigeon feeding in the upscale A ward. Until Monday, the civic body had registered at least three First Information Reports in connection with feeding pigeons, in violation of a ban. Of these, two cases were lodged in the G/North ward, which encompasses the Dadar Kabutarkhana, and the other FIR was filed in the D ward. The ongoing civic drive comes against the backdrop of the Bombay High Court directives on July 30, directing BMC to lodge FIRs against those who 'illegally' and in a 'defiant' manner feed pigeons across Mumbai's feeding areas, despite the policy prohibiting it.

Residents, commuters face struggle to access footpaths, cycle tracks in city
Bhubaneswar: Residents, commuters, and pedestrians are facing inconvenience and safety risks as public spaces like roads, footpaths and cycle tracks in the city are being allegedly taken over by haphazard vehicle parking and encroachment by street vendors. Locals attributed these growing issues to the lack of regular enforcement by civic authorities. The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) recently attempted to address the problem by evicting vendors from various areas, including the Unit II Market. However, the efforts faced resistance from vendors demanding proper rehabilitation before relocation. In Jan, during the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, the BMC conducted a comprehensive enforcement drive, evicting unauthorised vendors from 55 priority road stretches. These areas were designated as 'no vending zones', with signboards installed to reinforce the message. Despite these measures, vendors have returned, occupying spaces directly beneath the warning signs. "The footpaths are taken over by vehicles, and wherever there is some space, it is encroached by street vendors," said Ankita Mohapatra, a pedestrian in Patia area. In an effort to clearly demarcate public spaces, the civic authorities earlier painted cycle tracks in red and footpaths in green. However, with the paint fading, vendors and vehicles are once again encroaching on these areas, causing inconvenience to the public. Urban planner Piyush Rout highlighted the city's infrastructure challenges. "It is visible that the number of vehicles has increased recently, but it looks like the city doesn't have the infrastructure to handle them. Bhubaneswar is one city which has dedicated vending zones. Still street vending is rampant which can be seen as a failure of the administration," he noted. Responding to the concerns, city mayor Sulochana Das assured that enforcement squads are actively working to remove unauthorised vendors and constructing new vending zones to rehabilitate them. "Vehicle towing is also going on at different places," she added. Vendors alleged that the civic authorities are forcibly evicting them from areas where they have conducted business for years. Namita Jena, a vendor at Pandara, claimed, "Fake civic body officials recently approached us and intimidated us. We have filed a police complaint." Jena emphasised that vendors don't want to conduct business on the road, acknowledging the risks involved. "We are ready for relocation, but BMC needs to ensure that the place where they rehabilitate us is proper to conduct business," she said.
