This key feature has been axed from George Square plans

Glasgow Times25-04-2025
The initial plans had included a feature of fountains coming up from the ground and images showed children playing among the jets.
Hoardings are to go up this month and work is to start in June before statues are removed to be restored.

The public was asked for opinions on what the square should look like, and a water feature was a new addition that was considered and included in the early design ideas.

Now lack of budget means it has been removed from the tender and will no longer be part of the design
In June last year The council issued an update on the plans which stated: 'The works in George Square will deliver high-quality stone throughout the Square; informal 'play' areas for children in sensory gardens in the eastern areas; a water feature; a raised lawn platform; bespoke sheltered seating; and feature lighting.'
A new update to go before the contracts and property committee next week states: 'The work on George Square will deliver high-quality stone throughout; informal 'play' areas for children in sensory gardens in the eastern areas; a raised lawn platform; new trees species will be planted to add to the existing Norway Maple and Cherry trees in the Square; new seating to add to the remembrance benches; and feature lighting.'
It has been revealed the water feature plan has been scrapped.
In the paper to be discussed next week to approve the £20m contract states: 'Whilst there was an aspiration in early design stages to include a water feature as part of the redevelopment plans, this was removed from the tender documents to ensure that there was sufficient project budget to undertake the core works.
'Given the value of the landed tender for the Block C project, there is insufficient project budget remaining to include the water feature and it no longer forms part of the project scope."

Kuwait launches visa-on-arrival for expats in GCC countries

Fancy a holiday in the region? Well, you're in luck. Kuwait has just changed up its visa rules for all GCC residents, including those living in Dubai, making it easier to visit one of the region's top destinations. Effective immediately, all foreign nationals living in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman can now obtain a visa-on-arrival at entry points in Kuwait. The decision was published in the official gazette Kuwait Al-Youm on Sunday August 10 and applies to all residents living in Gulf Cooperation Council states. Kuwait City (Credit: Supplied) The move means that around 25 million foreign nationals living in the region can now enjoy the benefit of a Kuwaiti visa-on-arrival for a 90-day stay. As a result, Kuwait's Ministry of the Interior has now abolished previous visa rules, which only granted visas on arrival to GCC residents from certain categories of profession – such as doctors, engineers, judges and executives. Previously, nationals of countries in most European and North American, some Latin American countries plus the likes of China, Japan, South Korea and Singapore were eligible for the tourist visa-on-arrival. Kuwait offers tourists a wide range of modern attractions and rich cultural heritage, with the likes of Kuwait Towers and the Grand Mosque of Kuwait being must-visit attractions, before heading to the traditional souks. The visa change comes ahead of the rollout of a wider GCC Unified Travel visa, which is set to be introduced on a trial basis later in 2025. While full details of the unified visa have not been finalised, it will loosen travel rules all across the region for all residents and encourage tourism between GCC member states. Work is also gathering pace on a regional railway project, which will allow travellers more options across the region. The railway project is scheduled to be completed by 2030. US retailer Best Buy weighs boosting India headcount, Subramanian says (Aug 8)

CHENNAI, Aug 8 (Reuters) - U.S. retailer Best Buy (BBY.N), opens new tab is weighing the expansion of its India headcount to primarily add more digital and technology roles, Nithya Subramanian, senior director, data & AI COE, told Reuters. Best Buy employs around 350 people at its global capability centre in Bengaluru, better known as "India's Silicon Valley". That headcount could grow to approximately 500 over the next few months, Subramanian said on the sidelines of an event in Chennai. Many global companies have been setting up offices or boosting their presence in India to tap its growing talent pool. GCCs have been evolving into high-value innovation hubs from low-cost back offices in recent years. They now support their parent firms in vital functions including operations, finance, and research and development. "We will be hiring across the functions," Subramanian said. Best Buy, known for selling electronic items such as laptops, kitchen appliances and cameras, is looking to hire AI engineers, software engineers and product managers in India, according to its LinkedIn page. "Even if you look at the global strength, I think we are growing leaps and bounds in India," Subramanian said, noting that the Bengaluru office is Best Buy's largest tech hub. Best Buy operates more than 1,000 stores in the United States and Canada, where it employs over 85,000 people. It does not have retail operations in India. Another U.S. retailer, Costco Wholesale (COST.O), opens new tab, is gearing up to open its first India GCC, sources told Reuters last month. India's GCC market is expected to reach between $99 billion and $105 billion by 2030, from $64.6 billion in fiscal 2024, a report by industry body Nasscom and consulting firm Zinnov said.

Old Glasgow school building to be turned into social housing

Glasgow City Council (GCC) confirmed that the former Newlands Centre in Parkhead is to be converted into flats for social rent. At a committee meeting held on Thursday, August 7, councillors gave the green light for negotiations to begin for the off-market disposal of the property at 871 Springfield Road to Wheatley Homes. The three-storey former parish school is located close to Parkhead Cross and features a small two-storey extension as well as car parking facilities. The school closed in the 1970s and has been used for various purposes, including most recently as Health and Social Care Partnership offices. It was declared surplus to council requirements in October 2024. Land at Easterhill Street in Tollcross is also being disposed of to be developed into properties for mid-market rent. Councillors approved for two plots of land on the street to be sold to New City Vision Limited. The council will receive £350,000 from the sale of this site. The two plots measure 0.7 hectares in total and are made up of a natural covering of shrubbery and thick trees. GCC notes that the developer needs to secure both sites to make the development feasible. Councillor Ruairi Kelly, convener for Housing, Development, Built Heritage and Land Use at GCC, said: 'These disposals continue the ongoing and successful process in Glasgow of converting unproductive buildings and land into new purposes, in these cases, new and much-needed homes in Glasgow's East End. 'These new homes will meet the needs of people and families, as well as generating very welcome receipts for the public purse that will be reinvested into council services.'
