Sean "Diddy" Combs trial jury resumes deliberations with another question for judge
Judge Arun Subramanian is expected to begin by addressing a question posed Monday from the jury about one of the alleged racketeering acts — possession with intent to distribute drugs — which relates to the racketeering conspiracy charge Combs is facing. The jury sent a note asking for clarification on the part of the instructions addressing drug distribution.
Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty to federal charges of racketeering conspiracy, two counts of sex trafficking, and two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution for allegedly arranging to fly sex workers across state lines.
The first day of deliberations saw several notes from the jury, as well as Combs and his supporters bowing their heads in prayer in the courtroom. One of the notes came not long after jurors started deliberating and raised concerns from several jurors about another member of the panel. They told the judge they thought "he cannot follow your honor's instructions."
After a discussion between the judge, attorneys for Combs and prosecutors, the judge reminded the jurors of their obligation to follow the law and sent them back to resume their deliberations, but said if more issues should arise, the foreperson should send another note.
To help them come to a verdict, jurors were provided with a laptop loaded with all of the exhibits shown in court, including text messages, photographs and videos of the sexual encounters at the heart of the case.
Five alternate jurors are also on standby in case they're needed to fill in on the main jury.
The jury will sift through seven weeks of at times graphic and emotional testimony about the rap, fashion and reality TV impresario's propensity for violence and his sexual predilections, including drug-fueled sex marathons dubbed "freak-offs" or "hotel nights." Defense lawyers argued that there was no conspiracy and that his conduct did not violate federal laws.

Laura Coates 00:00:04 Okay folks, I'm sharing this update from outside the courthouse in Lower Manhattan, which is why it's kind of noisy, but we want to get you the latest. The jury in the Sean Diddy Combs trial reached a verdict this morning. They acquitted Combs of the two most serious charges he was facing, racketeering conspiracy — that's the RICO charge you heard about — and two counts of sex trafficking. He was found guilty on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. That means he could face up to 10 years or maybe even 20 in prison if they run that consecutively. But a RICO conviction? That could have put him away for life. I'm Laura Coates, and this is Trial by Jury. I mean the scenes that are unfolding outside this courthouse, quite stark from the composed very, very quiet courtrooms that we've been in for the last seven weeks. There are crowds out here, either jubilant or upset, and the court of public opinion on full display. But we want to get you the latest. Because just a couple of hours ago, the jury foreman stood in the courtroom and read off the following: On the count of racketeering conspiracy, not guilty. On the count sex trafficking by force, fraud or coercion pertaining to Cassie Ventura, not guilty. On the count of transportation to engage in prostitution pertaining to Cassie Ventura, guilty. On the count of sex trafficking pertaining to Jane, not guilty. On the count of transportation to engage in prostitution pertaining to Jane, guilty. Now those two guilty charges on transportation to engage in prostitution, those are what's known as the Mann Act, and that essentially prohibits anyone from crossing state lines for the purpose of engaging in a commercial sex act. But those were the two lesser charges that Diddy faced. The really big headline here is that he was cleared of the RICO and sex trafficking charges, each of which could carry a maximum sentence of either life in prison and, in one instance for sex trafficking, even 15 years. Now here's what went down after the verdicts were read. First of all, when we learned there was yet another note, they weren't quite sure, was it a note for further clarification? Remember, it hadn't even been 12 hours before that the jury was hung on that first count, and the judge told them to go back and deliberate more. Both the defense wanted that, and the prosecution wanted that, and deliberate they did. This time it wasn't another hung jury. Within an hour of coming back to the deliberation room, they had made up for the hung jury and decided to have a verdict instead, not on four out of five, but on all five counts. Now this was huge given the fact that they thought there may have been a hung jury, and the tension was thick. You had the attorneys for Sean Diddy Combs surrounding him. There were looks of fear, I've been told, and unease. The children, adult children, filtering into the courtroom, along with Sean Diddy Combs's mother, who had been there for the better part of almost two months. The last time they had communicated, we saw them in the court saying to his mother, I'm gonna be alright. Well then, there was the moment when the verdict was read, and a bit of a fist pump from Sean "Diddy" Combs, the bowing of the head, the kneeling almost as if in prayer, and an eruption of celebration by the family members in the courtroom. This was in stark contrast to the last two months where frankly they were all quite stoic, albeit at times emotional. Well hearing that, the defense attorneys immediately went to try to get him released pending sentencing. Now obviously there were two letters that were sent as well from the prosecution and the defense laying out their positions, not the least of which included the conditions of release, meaning he'd turn over his passport. He wouldn't have access to a plane. You'd know who he was staying with. He couldn't commit other crimes, drug testing. It's up to the judge to decide whether or not he is a threat to society or anyone else. We also got a statement from the attorney for Cassie Ventura about this notion of whether Sean should be released, say, 'Ms. Ventura believes that Mr. Combs is likely to pose a danger to the victims who testified in this case, including herself as well as to the community." After, you also heard from Deonte Nash, a witness and personal friend and stylist of Cassie Ventura, who expressed his own concerns. We're going to be back soon with more details. The possibility that Sean "Diddy" Combs could possibly walk out the front door of the courthouse pending his sentencing, many are surprised.

Steven Spielberg Got Candid About Just How Hard Filming Jaws Was And Why He Had 'Consistent Nightmares' About It For Years After They Wrapped

The production of the movie that is called the 'first summer blockbuster' was an absolute nightmare to film by all accounts. However, it seems that director Steven Spielberg actually had literal nightmares after making the film due to what was, for him, a truly traumatic experience. In the new NatGeo documentary Jaws @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story, available July 10 with a Hulu or Disney+ subscription, Steven Spielberg talks about the experience of directing the eponymous flick, a movie that went significantly over budget and over schedule. The director had an incredibly difficult time getting everything to work during the shoot at Martha's Vineyard, but it was only after filming wrapped that Spielberg really began to have a hard time. He said… When the film wrapped Martha's Vineyard, I had a full-blown panic attack. I couldn't breathe, I thought I was having a heart attack. I couldn't get a full breath of air. I kept going to the bathroom and splashing water on my face. I was shaking. By all accounts, while Spielberg may have been internally panicking during the entire location shoot, he was able to keep himself together. He did a remarkable job in figuring out how to contend with various issues. That includes everything that went wrong with the frequently broken mechanical shark. As crazy as production was, it's wild to think that it wasn't until after the shoot that he apparently really had difficulties. It sounds like he simply let himself go, given that he was at a point where he could lose it a bit without causing problems for the rest of the crew. The Oscar winner says he felt responsible for the shoot being so much longer than it was supposed to be, keeping the crew on location so long. Spielberg continued… It was everything that I had experienced on the island, trying to not only hold myself together, but hold the crew together… I felt really responsible for keeping them there for as long as we had to stay. Following Steven Spielberg's minor breakdown, production on Jaws actually lasted another couple of months after the crew left Martha's Vineyard. Work was done in a water tank at MGM, and various other pickup shots being done anywhere they could do it, including in the swimming pool of the film's editor. The 1975 movie would go on to become the highest-grossing movie ever made at that point, and a massive cultural moment. However, it seems that the film's success did not entirely vindicate Steven Spielberg in his own mind. He says he would continue to have actual nightmares for years afterward, as if he were still directing the movie. He said… I had a real tough time when I finished the movie, and the success was fantastic, but it didn't stop the nightmares. It didn't stop me waking up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat, where the sheets would be soaking wet. We didn't have the words 'PTSD' in those days, and I had consistent nightmares about directing Jaws for years afterwards. I was still on the movie, and the film was never-ending. Of course, Steven Spielberg's filmography speaks for itself, and he would go on to direct some of the most popular and most successful movies ever made. Jaws truly launched his career, but he certainly worked hard, and suffered significantly to get there. I'm not sure if Spielberg is among te the 50th anniversary of the release of his shark-centric thriller film. However, as a fan, I truly believe Spielberg should be proud of what he and his cohorts accomplished all those years ago.
