Blue Jays cut veteran reliever Erik Swanson, put struggling starter Bowden Francis on IL
TORONTO (AP) — The Toronto Blue Jays cut veteran reliever Erik Swanson on Tuesday and put struggling starter Bowden Francis on the 15-day injured list because of a right shoulder impingement.
The Blue Jays recalled right-hander Paxton Schultz from Triple-A Buffalo and selected left-hander Justin Bruihl from the Bisons.
Swanson was designated for assignment after allowing seven earned runs in 1 2/3 innings over two weekend appearances against Philadelphia.
Swanson was 1-0 with a 15.19 ERA in six appearances since coming off the 60-day injured list on June 1. The right-hander missed the start of the season because of a nerve issue in his arm.
Francis has lost his past six decisions and is winless since April 18 against Seattle. He's 2-8 with a 6.05 ERA in 14 starts. His IL stint is retroactive to June 15.
Francis twice took no-hitters into the ninth inning in 2024, losing both bids on leadoff home runs in the final frame.
Swanson went 2-2 with a 5.03 ERA in 45 games with Toronto in 2024, a challenging season that began with a young son being struck by a car during spring training. Swanson started the season on the injured list because of a sore forearm and was later demoted to Triple-A, rejoining the Blue Jays in July.
Swanson went 4-2 with four saves and a 2.97 ERA in 2023, his first with Toronto after being acquired from Seattle in a trade that sent popular slugger Teoscar Hernández to the Mariners.
Swanson will be eligible for free agency following the 2025 World Series.

Astros Dealing With Frustrating News on Highly Anticipated Outfield Prospect
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Three years after they drafted him in the second round out of Oregon State, the American League West-leading Houston Astros called up left-handed outfielder Jacob Melton to take the place of utility man Zach Dezenzo, who was placed of the injured list with inflammation in his left hand. Less than three weeks later, Melton's brief big league career has come to a screeching halt — a presumably temporary one, but frustrating nonetheless — as a strained right ankle suffered in Friday's Astros victory over the Minnesota Twins sent the 24-year-old rookie to the 10-day injured list. HOUSTON, TEXAS - JUNE 10: Jacob Melton #31 of the Houston Astros looks on during a game against the Chicago White Sox at Daikin Park on June 10, 2025 in Houston, Texas. HOUSTON, TEXAS - JUNE 10: Jacob Melton #31 of the Houston Astros looks on during a game against the Chicago White Sox at Daikin Park on June 10, 2025 in Houston, according to Houston general manager Dana Brown, Melton will be sidelined for a lot longer than 10 days. While declining to give a specific target date for Melton's return, Brown told the Houston Chronicle that the organization's No. 2-ranked prospect will be out of action for "at least four weeks or so." Melton's June 1 MLB debut was a memorable one, as in his second at bat, he used his 30.5 feet-per-second speed to get himself down the first base line in time to turn a ground ball to second base into his first big league hit — albeit after an unsuccessful challenge by the Twins. He appeared in nine of 11 possible games since the call-up, recording seven hits with a pair of walks. Only one of his hits has gone for extra bases, a triple. In his small sample size, Melton was hitting .241 with a subpar .601 OPS. But slow starts are not unusual even for highly touted rookies. Melton is listed as the 118th-ranked overall prospect by Baseball Prospectus. The No. 1 prospect, Roman Anthony of the Boston Red Sox, was called up on June 9 and had played in seven games as of Tuesday, with only two hits and an .095 batting average to his name. One of Anthony's hits was his first MLB home run, coming on Monday in a road game against the Seattle Mariners. "I think frustrating is a good word to put on it," Melton told "I think a lot of guys go through it at some point in the season and this year has been a little bit tougher than most, but it's not going to be anything too big. We'll work through it and come back." Melton also dealt with injuries to his back and groin earlier in the season, playing for the Sugar Land Space Cowboys, Houston's Triple-A affiliate. Liberty coach embraces WNBA viewership milestone powered by Caitlin Clark's return: 'I love it'
NEW YORK – The New York Liberty lost their first game of the season against the Indiana Fever Saturday, but in the grand scheme of it all, head coach Sandy Brondello knows the value of those matchups goes beyond wins and losses. The Fever handed the defending WNBA champions their first loss of the season behind Caitlin Clark's stellar performance. The reigning Rookie of the Year dropped a season-high 32 points and made seven 3-pointers in the 102-88 victory, while Sabrina Ionescu scored a season-high 34 points for the Liberty. ESPN released the TV ratings for the anticipated matchup, which was the third most-watched WNBA game ever on ABC with an average of 2.2 million viewers. The game peaked at 2.8 million viewers, a 76% increase from last season's regular-season average on the network. Speaking to reporters ahead of Tuesday's game against the Atlanta Dream, Brondello was asked about the viewership milestone. While admitting it was a game she wished the Liberty closed out, Brondello acknowledged the importance of reaching a larger audience. "I love it. That's what we've been trying to aim for since the league started a long, long time ago," she said. "It certainly was a good show, and Caitlin put on a great performance there." Saturday's viewership numbers follow a trend that began last season, when the WNBA had its most-watched regular season in 24 years and its highest attendance in 22 years. Much of that success correlated with Clark's debut. She set league records for most assists in a season (337) and most assists in a game (19). She also became the first rookie in league history to record two triple-doubles and set the single-season rookie record for points and 3-pointers made. The league's rapid growth has generated ratings numbers that rival other major sports leagues in North America. The Athletic reported Tuesday that the Stanley Cup Final between the Florida Panthers and the Edmonton Oilers has had average viewership numbers in the U.S. between 2.3 and 2.6 million for the first four games of the series. According to the report, it marked a 25% decrease from last season. "The more people can get eyes on our game, they'll fall in love with it because this is the best place in the world," Brondello added.
