Bethell to become youngest England captain in Ireland T20 series

CNAa day ago
Jacob Bethell is set to become the youngest player to captain an England men's team in an international match after the country's cricket board (ECB) named him as the skipper for next month's Twenty20 series against Ireland.
The 21-year-old all-rounder has represented England in 29 matches across all formats and will lead the team in the absence of the regular test players, who have been rested for the three-match series in Dublin, the ECB said on Friday.
'Jacob Bethell has impressed with his leadership qualities ever since he has been with the England squads and the series against Ireland will provide him with the opportunity to further develop those skills on the international stage," England selector Luke Wright said in a statement.
The series in Ireland will kick off after England's tour of South Africa for three One-Day Internationals (ODI) and three T20 matches, starting September 2.
Right-arm fast bowler Sonny Baker has earned his first national team call-up for the ODIs against South Africa after the 22-year-old impressed selectors with his performance for England Lions and in domestic cricket.
England will travel to New Zealand in October for a white-ball tour, followed by five tests in Australia from November.

Richarlison double helps Spurs thrash promoted Burnley 3-0

LONDON :Tottenham Hotspur began the Thomas Frank era in the Premier League with a convincing 3-0 home victory over promoted side Burnley on Saturday thanks to a majestic double from striker Richarlison which included an acrobatic volley. The Brazilian opened the scoring in the 10th minute when he turned in a cross from new recruit Mohammed Kudus and the pair combined again on the hour mark when Richarlison volleyed a well-timed effort into the net to extend the lead. Six minutes later, Brennan Johnson made it 3-0 on the counter-attack after Richarlison won the ball back in midfield as Burnley struggled to deal with Spurs' press and intensity. It was no meek surrender from the visitors, however, as they managed to get forward and take nearly as many shots as Tottenham, but Scott Parker's side lacked quality in finishing.

Semenyo thankful for support as police arrest man on suspicion of racial abuse

LIVERPOOL, England :Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo thanked his teammates, Liverpool, match officials and the "entire football family" for their support after the Ghana international reported racist abuse during Friday's Premier League season opener at Anfield. Semenyo was targeted by a man in the crowd during the first half, with referee Anthony Taylor stopping play to address the incident. Taylor spoke to both managers and captains before play resumed. Merseyside Police said a 47-year-old man had been ejected from Anfield. On Saturday, they confirmed the man from Liverpool had been arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence and taken into custody to be interviewed. "Last night at Anfield will stay with me forever - not because of one person's words, but because of how the entire football family stood together," Semenyo wrote on Instagram. "To my Bournemouth teammates who supported me in that moment, to the Liverpool players and fans who showed their true character, to the Premier League officials who handled it professionally - thank you. "Football showed its best side when it mattered most. With Liverpool leading 2-0, Semenyo then netted twice in the second half to level the score before the home side struck two late goals to win 4-2. "Scoring those two goals felt like speaking the only language that truly matters on the pitch," Semenyo added. "This is why I play - for moments like these, for my teammates, for everyone who believes in what this beautiful game can be. "The overwhelming messages of support from across the football world remind me why I love this sport. We keep moving forward, together." Bournemouth coach Andoni Iraola said it was a "big shame that these things keep happening", while captain Adam Smith was shocked by the abuse. "Totally unacceptable, kind of in shock it happened in this day and age. I don't know how Ant has carried on playing and come up with these goals" Smith told Sky Sports. "He's a little bit down - something needs to be done. Taking a knee has taken no effect. We've supported him and hopefully he'll be OK. "I wanted him to react (after scoring), that's what I'd have done. I'd have gone straight over there. It shows what kind of man he is to report it to the ref and carry on. Fair play to Ant." Semenyo also revealed that he had been racially abused online after the game.

Ten-man Villa earn 0-0 draw with Newcastle in their Premier League opener

BIRMINGHAM, England :Aston Villa survived defender Ezri Konsa's dismissal to salvage a 0-0 draw at home to Newcastle United in their Premier League opener on Saturday, with the visitors missing want-away striker Alexander Isak as they created chances but failed to finish. Newcastle's new signing Anthony Elanga almost scored in the third minute but Marco Bizot made an excellent reflex save on his league debut to deny the winger and the Dutchman was called into action several more times as Eddie Howe's side dominated. Villa managed to steady the ship but were thrown into disarray in the 66th minute when Konsa was shown a straight red card for pulling down Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon while he was in hot pursuit of a through ball from Elanga. Newcastle continued to fire crosses into the box but without a recognised centre-forward such as Sweden international Isak, who wants to leave amid interest from champions Liverpool, they could not convert them and the game ended in a stalemate.
