Rexy wants to see Man-Tee become hardy boys
PETALING JAYA: More help will be given to make national men's doubles pair Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun hardy. While happy with the rapid progress shown by Wei Chong-Kai Wun, national doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky said the Malaysian duo could have reached the Indonesian Open semi-finals if not for falling victim to crowd intimidation at Istora Senayan in Jakarta last week. World No. 7 Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun played amidst boos and jeers en route to losing 18-21, 21-12, 18-21 in the last four against world No. 8 homesters Sabar Gutama-Moh Reza. Rexy said the jeers had affected Wei Chong-Kai Wun although they had been in the same situation at the same stage last year. Last year, they defeated Sabar-Moh in the semis to reach the Indonesian Open final. 'I spoke to Wei Chong-Kai Wun and they admitted that they were affected by the jeers,' said Rexy. 'We cannot do anything about the fans as this is part of sports. This type of incident happens in football matches too. 'Our players need to be mentally tougher when they take on Indonesian players in Istora. We have to help our players handle this.'

Rosman stays put to produce women's doubles champs
Great show: Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah in action against China's Li Jiying-Luo Xumin during their semi-final match at the Indonesian Open. — AP PETALING JAYA: National women's doubles head coach Rosman Razak is not planning to jump ship but will stick with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) until the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. Rosman is fully aware of his task and he aims to remain firm in his objective of guiding all the shuttlers under his care until 2028 regardless of any decision made by his players to turn professional. Currently, his top pair and world No. 3 Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah have yet to sign a contract with the BA of Malaysia and there is a possibility that they could turn independent. Rosman is not letting his charges' ongoing unresolved contract distract him from his task at hand. 'Whatever the outcome of Pearly-Thinaah's contracts, I can't afford to think about this as it will affect me too,' said Rosman after overseeing a training session at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara yesterday. 'I don't know the future but as long as they are training under me, I will do my best to guide them and keep working hard towards the biggest goal which is the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. 'BAM hired me for this and my responsibility is not just towards Pearly-Thinaah but also the other women's doubles pairs in the team.' Despite the contract issue, Rosman did well to guide Pearly-Thinaah to a runners-up finish in the recent Indonesian Open. The pair made it into their first ever World Tour Super 1000 final before going down fighting 25-23, 12-21, 19-21 to China's world No. 1 Liu Shengshu-Tan Ning. 'Pearly-Thinaah did not win the title but I'm happy with their performance in this tournament,' said Rosman. 'It's a good breakthrough for them and also a boost for the entire women's doubles department. I hope they can maintain their form. 'For me, it's normal for players to go through ups and downs. We need to support them more when they are struggling than when they are winning.' Pearly-Thinaah will next compete in the back-to-back Japan Open (July 15-20) and China Open (July 22-27).

Tennis-Raducanu leads British trio into second round at Queen's Club
Tennis - Queen's Club Championships - Queen's Club, London, Britain - June 10, 2025 Britain's Emma Raducanu in action during her round of 32 match against Spain's Cristina Bucsa Action Images via Reuters/Andrew Couldridge LONDON (Reuters) -Emma Raducanu had a comfortable straight sets win over Spain's Cristina Bucsa and was one of three Britons to reach the second round of the WTA 500 tournament at Queen's Club on Tuesday. Bucsa had won their only previous meeting in the first round of this year's Singapore Open, but this time the Spaniard was no match for the 22-year-old wildcard and Raducanu strolled to a 6-1 6-2 win. "I'm still trying to find my groove on this surface," Raducanu said. "I knew today would be a very difficult match, I lost to Cristina earlier in the year so I was trying to make sure that didn't happen again and fight to get myself into the second round." Raducanu is likely to face a tougher task in the next round where she could meet current Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova if the Czech seventh seed overcomes Slovak Rebecca Sramkova. Top tier women's tennis has returned to Queen's Club for the first time since 1973 and the home crowd had plenty to cheer on day two with Katie Boulter and Heather Watson also winning their first-round matches. "To have the women back here, it feels very special," Boulter, current British number one, said. "It's something I've dreamt of, actually walking out on this court, after the last couple of years coming as a fan watching the men." Boulter beat Australian qualifier Ajla Tomljanovic 7-6(4) 1-6 6-4 while Watson defeated Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva 6-4 6-3 to earn a second-round clash with another Kazakh, fourth seed former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina. The other Briton in action, Francesca Jones went down 6-2 6-4 to American McCartney Kessler who will meet top seed Zheng Quinwen. (Reporting by Trevor StynesEditing by Toby Davis)
