Pearly-Thinaah also crash out of Singapore Open

Pearly Tan-M Thinaah have now lost three times to China's Jia Yi Fan-Zhang Shu Xian out of their four encounters so far. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Women's doubles shuttlers Pearly Tan-M Thinaah have failed to make it to the semi-finals of the Singapore Open after losing to China's Jia Yi Fan-Zhang Shu Xian. The Malaysian world No 4 pair lost 21-14, 22-24, 14-21 to their 11th ranked rivals in a match that lasted 72 minutes. After winning the first game, Pearly-Thinaah were on the brink of winning the tie when they had match points twice in the second game. However, Yi Fan-Shu Xian made a comeback and forced a rubber game, which saw a point-for-point exchange before the Chinese pair won the match. Pearly-Thinaah have met the Chinese shuttlers four times so far in their career and lost on three occasions. In the all-Malaysian men's doubles quarter-final, Asian champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik avenged their defeat to Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun at the Malaysia Masters final last week by winning in straight games in Singapore. The world No 3 duo took just 33 minutes to tame their 7th ranked compatriots 22-20, 21-17 to set up a semi-final clash with India's Chirag Shetty-Satwiksairaj Rankireddy. Earlier, Malaysian fans were left disappointed when men's doubles top seeds Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani were sent packing by Shetty-Rankireddy in straight games. Mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai and men's singles player Leong Jun Hao were also bundled out in the quarter-finals.

Aaron-Wooi Yik break jinx to reach Singapore Open quarter-finals

PETALING JAYA: Top men's doubles pair Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik finally overcame their jinx against Japan's Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi, defeating them in the Singapore Open's second round on Thursday (May 29). Playing at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, Aaron-Wooi Yik made a strong start by taking the opening game. Hoki-Kobayashi managed to push the match into a decider, but Aaron-Wooi Yik were determined not to endure another heartbreak like their previous Sudirman Cup clash. The Malaysians held their nerve to secure a 21-18, 24-26, 21-12 win and book their place in the quarter-finals. At first glance, it may have looked like just another match, but for Aaron-Wooi Yik, it was a psychological barrier they finally broke, as their Japanese rivals had won nine of their previous 11 meetings. The last time the Malaysians defeated the former world champions was at the 2021 Sudirman Cup in Vantaa, Finland. "Of course, while we were playing, there were flashbacks to our last match against them in the Sudirman Cup. In the second set, we had several match points but couldn't convert them." "Fortunately, in the third set, our coach, Herry IP (Iman Pierngadi), gave us a lot of motivation to lift our spirits." "He reminded us to forget about the past and focus on playing point by point," said Aaron in a post-match interview with BWF. Aaron-Wooi Yik will face compatriots Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun in the quarter-finals on Friday. It will be a rematch of last week's Malaysian Masters final, which went in favour of Wei Chong-Kai Wun. Meanwhile, women's doubles pair Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah were also in fine form as they booked their place in the quarter-finals after defeating Japan's Yuki Fukushima and Mayu Matsumoto. However, it was far from an easy win for Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah, who had to dig deep for 48 minutes before prevailing 25-23, 21-18. They will now wait for the outcome of the match between China's Jia Yifan-Zhang Shuxian and India's Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand Pullela to find out their quarter-final opponents.

National top women's doubles pair Pearly Tan-Thinaah dream ends in Malaysia Masters semi-final heartbreak

KUALA LUMPUR, May 24 — Malaysia's top women's doubles pair Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah fell short of reaching the final of the Malaysia Masters 2025 after losing to China's Jia Yi Fan-Zhang Shu Xian in their semi-final clash at Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil here today. Despite playing in front of home supporters and riding on the momentum of their Thailand Open win last week, Pearly-Thinaah were unable to maintain consistency in their game and had to concede defeat 16-21, 21-15, 14-21. This marks the second consecutive loss for Pearly-Thinaah to the same Chinese pair, having also lost to them at the Orleans Masters 2025 last March. 'For today's match, we feel disappointed, but we won't dwell on it for long. We really gave our best and we did quite well,' Pearly told reporters afterwards. Pearly described Yi Fan as having great game variety, particularly in controlling the backcourt, while Shu Xian is an aggressive net player — making them a well-synchronised women's doubles pair. The defeat extends Pearly-Thinaah's Malaysia Masters heartbreak, with their last final appearance in this tournament being in the 2023 edition, where they lost to South Korea's Baek Ha Na-Lee So Hee 20-22, 21-8, 17-21 in an epic 101-minute battle. Meanwhile, Pearly-Thinaah remain tight-lipped about their future with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) after reports that their contract ended late last year. 'No comment. We've got a tournament coming up. We don't really have time, so no comment on this,' said Pearly. Pearly-Thinaah are next scheduled to face Hong Kong's Lui Lok Lok-Tsang Hiu Yan in the first round of the Singapore Open 2025, which will take place from May 27 to June 1. — Bernama

Pearly-Thinaah fail in bid to win on home soil again

Pearly Tan-M Thinaah, winners at the Thailand Open last week, have failed to qualify for the Malaysia Masters women's doubles final. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : National women's doubles shuttlers Pearly Tan-M Thinaah's hopes of winning their first title on home soil were dashed by a Chinese pair at the Malaysia Masters today. Despite putting up a gallant display, it was not good enough for the world No 4 pair as they went down to the 16th ranked Chinese pair of Jia Yi Fan and Zhang Shu Xian 16-21, 21-15,14-21 in a match that lasted 74 minutes at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur. Pearly-Thinaah, who lifted the Thailand Open title last week, will take home US$6,650 (RM28,200) as semi-finalists. They were hoping to lift their first title on home soil after having won four World Tour Super series – the Thailand Open last week, the Hong Kong Open (2024), the French Open (2022) and the Swiss Open (2021). A home pair have only won the women's doubles title at the Malaysia Masters once through Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty in 2012. The Malaysia Masters is part of the World Tour Super 500 series. The doubles champions will earn US$37,525 (RM159,000) and the runners-up, US$18,050 (RM76,542).
