Pearly-Thinaah fall to home pair in China Open semis
PETALING JAYA : Women's doubles shuttlers Pearly Tan-M Thinaah failed to qualify for the China Open finals after being outplayed by a lower-ranked home pair in the semi-finals today.
The world No 3 pair lost 14-21, 17-21 in 38 minutes to seventh-ranked Jia Yi Fan-Zhang Shu Xian, who were backed by a vociferous home crowd.
Pearly-Thinaah took home US$28,000 (RM118,000) as semi-finalists at the World Tour Super 1000 event.
Yi Fan-Shu Xian have now won four of their five encounters with the Malaysians. The only time when Pearly-Thinaah won was at the Indian Open in January after the Chinese duo were forced to retire due to injury.
Yi Fan-Shu Xian will play either China's world No 1 pair Liu Sheng Shu-Tan Ning or the sixth-ranked Kim Hye Jeong-Kong Hee Yong from South Korea for the title tomorrow.
Pearly-Thinaah's hope for a second World Tour title this year after winning the Thailand Open in May continues to be elusive despite having reached four finals so far.
Last week, the duo were runners-up at the Japan Open.
The only Malaysians remaining at the China Open are men's doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, who will take on India's Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chiraq Shetty in a semi-final match this evening.

'We have to try and be at our best. So naturally, I think we're going to miss a player of Alex's quality and the group are going to feel that. There's no denying that. 'And I can't sit here and claim that they (the players) won't. But they're a very professional group of players and they're doing brilliantly as far as I can see in terms of managing the situation.' Newcastle, who qualified for Champions League football after finishing fifth in the Premier League last season, are next in action against a K-League XI in South Korea on Wednesday.

(AP pic) HONG KONG : AC Milan beat Liverpool 4-2 in a pre-season friendly in Hong Kong on Saturday as the Premier League club's record signing Florian Wirtz made his first start for them. Former Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish laid a wreath before the game, and the players had 'Diogo J 20' on their shirts in honour of their former teammate Diogo Jota, who died along with his brother Andre Silva in a car accident in Spain this month. The English champions fell behind in the 10th minute when Rafael Leao scored from a Christian Pulisic pass. Dominik Szoboszlai levelled 20 minutes later with a curling shot from the edge of the box following an assist by Rio Ngumoha, who latched onto a long ball from Ryan Gravenberch. Leao orchestrated a devastating counter-attack as Milan reclaimed the lead early in the second half. The Portuguese winger powered past Conor Bradley on the left flank and squared for Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who fired home from inside the box.
