(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Malaysia's world No 3 women's doubles pair Pearly Tan-M Thinaah booked a quarter-final berth at the China Open but not before being made to work hard by the 99th ranked Japanese pair Rui Hirokami-Sayaka Hobara. The more experienced Malaysian pair had to bring out their best before winning 21-17, 21-13 in their second round match at the Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium in Changzhou. Pearly-Thinaah took 38 minutes to overcome the Japanese pair who were only playing together for the fourth time in BWF World Tour championships. The Japanese pair met the Malaysians in the Thailand Open semi-finals for the first time in May and lost in straight games. Pearly-Thinaah will play the winners of the match between Indonesia's Fabriana Dwipuji Kusuma-Amalia Cahaya Pratiwi and Yuki Fukushima-Mayu Matsumoto from Japan. No Malaysian women's doubles pair have ever made it to the China Open finals.

(AFP pic) KUALA LUMPUR : National men's doubles shuttlers Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik qualified for the quarter-finals of the China Open after an easy win over France's Christo Popov-Toma Junior Popov. The world No 2 pair took just 35 minutes to beat the French brothers 21-17, 21-18. This is their second win over the French duo, who are ranked 18 rungs below them, in their two encounters so far. Aaron-Wooi Yik, who were eliminated in the first round of the Japan Open last week, were in fiery form today. Their win also assures Malaysia of a semi-final spot as Aaron-Wooi Yik will play against world No 7 Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun in the quarter-finals. Wei Chong-Kai Wun took 56 minutes to defeat compatriots Nur Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong 17-21, 21-17, 21-19 in another second round match. Three other Malaysian pairs have qualified for the tournament's quarter-finals, namely men's doubles pair Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi, mixed doubles shuttlers Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei and women's doubles pair Pearly Tan-M Thinaah. The China Open is a World Tour Super 1000 event which offers a total cash prize of US$2 million (RM8.4 million).

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Malaysia's unheralded women's doubles pair Go Pei Kee-Teoh Mei Xing upset the form book at the China Open today when they defeated a top Japanese pair to qualify for the quarter-finals. The world No 22 pair battled for more than an hour to overcome Rin Iwanaga-Kie Nakanishi 26-24, 7-21, 21-18 in a hard-fought three-game match in Changzhou. This is a major achievement for the Malaysians as it will be their first quarter-final appearance at a World Tour Super 1000 event. Today's match was the first time both pairs had met in an international tournament. The Malaysians face another tough encounter in tomorrow's quarter-final, meeting home pair Jia Yi Fan-Zhang Shu Xian, who are ranked world No 8. The tournament offers a total prize money of US$2 million (RM8.4 million), with winners in the doubles events taking home US$148,000 (RM624,000) and the runners-up US$70,000 (RM295,146). All semi-finalists will get US$28,000 (RM118,000) each while quarter-finalists will be awarded US$12,500 (RM52,700).

Thinaah booked their place in the quarter-finals of the China Open after a hard-fought win over Japan's Rui Hirokami and Sayaka Hobara. According to Free Malaysia Today (FMT), the more experienced Malaysian duo were pushed in the early stages but eventually prevailed 21-17, 21-13 in their second-round clash at the Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium in Changzhou. The match lasted 38 minutes, with Pearly-Thinaah having to dig deep to overcome the world No 99 Japanese pair, who were playing together for only the fourth time in a BWF World Tour event. The Japanese pair had previously met the Malaysians in the semi-finals of the Thailand Open in May, where they also lost in straight games. Pearly-Thinaah will next face the winners of the second-round match between Indonesia's Fabriana Dwipuji Kusuma-Amalia Cahaya Pratiwi and Japan's Yuki Fukushima-Mayu Matsumoto. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Malaysia's top women's doubles pair, Pearly Tan-M Thinaah, cruised into the second round of the China Open after easily seeing off compatriots Ong Xin Yi-Carmen Ting in straight games tonight. Pearly-Thinaah took just 24 minutes to defeat their teenage rivals 21-8, 21-12, Utusan Malaysia reported. They will face Japan's Rui Hirokami-Sayaka Hobara in the next round. Also progressing to the second round were world 22 pair Go Pei Kee-Teoh Mei Xing, who swept aside Poland's Paulina Hankiewicz-Kornelia Marczak 21-5, 21-6 in 22 minutes. Pei Kee-Mei Xing will face much tougher opponents when they meet world No 8 pair Rin Iwanaga-Kie Nakanishi of Japan next. Men's doubles pair Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun also progressed by defeating fellow Malaysians Yap Roy King-Wan Arif Junaidi 21-17, 21-16. They will face another Malaysian pair, Nur Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong, which guarantees Malaysia a spot in the quarter-finals.
