
China to launch world's first drone ‘mother ship' (VIDEO)
China is preparing to launch what it says is the world's first 'drone carrier' aircraft, capable of releasing swarms of AI-guided kamikaze drones during high-altitude missions.
The Jiu Tian, or 'High Sky' UAV, is scheduled to complete its first test mission by the end of June, according to the state broadcaster CCTV.
The aircraft is said to have a maximum takeoff weight of 16 tonnes and a wingspan of 25 meters. It can reportedly cruise at altitudes up to 15,000 meters (50,000 feet) – higher than most common medium-range air defense systems – and has a range of approximately 7,000 kilometers (4,350 miles).
The jet-powered Jiu Tian is reportedly capable of carrying up to 6 tonnes of ammunition with the ability to release up to 100 units of loitering munitions or small drones, including kamikaze UAVs, from two launch bays located on either side of the fuselage.
After the aircraft completes a series of test missions, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) plans to deploy it as a 'drone mother ship' UAV, which will make it possible to extend the operational radius of attack drones and boost their swarming capabilities. It will also be possible to use it in intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance assignments, as well as electronic warfare.

Outside of military applications, the drone carrier could be employed for emergency logistics, border patrol, search and rescue missions, and natural disaster response.
The plane, which was first unveiled at China's Zhuhai air show in November, has been designed by the state-owned aerospace giant Aviation Industry Corporation of China and built by Xian Chida Aircraft Parts Manufacturing.
As noted by the Economic Times, the Jiu Tian largely mirrors the capabilities of Western UAV systems like the MQ-9 Reaper and the RQ-4 Global Hawk, while adding swarm-launch functionality, which has yet to be introduced in the US arsenal.

Russian forces take out Ukrainian rotorcraft drone bombers – MOD (VIDEO)
The Russian Defense Ministry has published a video showcasing recent interceptions of Ukrainian rotorcraft bomber drones. These robotic aircraft are notable for their frequent integration with Elon Musk's Starlink system. Footage released on Thursday shows three separate interceptions by units from Russia's West group, which deployed small kamikaze drones to counter the Ukrainian aircraft. The drones in question, dubbed 'Baba Yaga' after a flying witch from Slavic folklore, were originally agricultural rotorcraft, but were repurposed for military missions. Ukraine has found a niche for such larger drones thanks to its access to the Starlink satellite internet system operated by Elon Musk's SpaceX. By mounting Starlink terminals onboard, operators can pilot the drones at virtually unlimited ranges, approaching in that regard the capabilities of advanced unmanned aerial systems. The Baba Yaga class drones typically feature six rotors — though some have four — and are valued for their substantial payload capacity. However, their size also makes them more susceptible to detection and neutralization by anti-aircraft defenses, including sniper fire. Earlier this month, the Russian military described tactics used to down the drones, including the deployment of sniper teams in which the spotter provides cover fire from an assault rifle, should the target try to engage the main shooter. A sniper identified by the callsign 'Sirius' explained the approach, saying in some situations it's advantageous for the team to remain in place after being discovered. 'When the enemy identifies our position and keeps the drones further away, we can use a longer-range sniper rifle. At such distances, high-speed targets require greater lead when aiming, but they can be taken out in two or three shots,' he said.

India commissions BrahMos missiles production unit amid ceasefire
India has inaugurated a BrahMos supersonic cruise missile production unit in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, according to Defense Ministry officials. The facility, inaugurated by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, will manufacture one of the world's fastest supersonic cruise missiles, with a range of 290-400km and speeds up to Mach 2.8, officials from the ministry added. BrahMos Aerospace is a joint Indo-Russian venture launched in 2005. It was named after the Brahmaputra and Moskva rivers. India's Defense Research and Development Organization has a 50.5% stake in the company, while Russian NPO Mashinostroyenia holds 49.5%. In addition to the manufacturing unit, the BrahMos Aerospace Integration and Testing Facility has also been launched. This facility will be crucial for the testing and assembly of missiles, the Defense Ministry officials added. Initially, the missile had a range of 290 kilometers (180 miles), but continuous upgrades have increased its range and enhanced its strategic capabilities. The developments come after Russia and India signed a new defense pact in February this year. The new agreement streamlines logistics and enhances cooperation between the armed forces of the two nations, facilitating joint military operations and activities, ministry officials said. Currently, around 60% of the Indian military's equipment is of Russian origin.
