University denies delayed emergency response in death of China student
A spokesperson for the private university said while the student's symptoms resembled a heart attack, the actual medical condition required specific treatment beyond standard emergency equipment designed for cardiac issues, Sin Chew Daily reported, quoting a statement from the Xiamen University.
According to the police, results of the post mortem determined the cause of death to be pulmonary thromboembolism due to right deep vein thrombosis.
The student, idetified as a 20-year-old male from China, was found dead in his dormitory yesterday morning.
"His condition required specialised medical intervention and equipment," the university said.
"The critical window for rescue was very short and exceeded the scope of typical emergency response tools usually used for heart-related episodes," the spokesperson said.
The university said it had immediately activated their emergency response protocol when the incident occurred.
"This included an on-site certified first responder administering CPR, quick contact with emergency medical services and immediate assistance from dormitory staff and campus security," the university said.
"The university also set up an emergency response task force and contacted forensic experts as per police instructions. Psychological support teams were deployed to assist the affected students and the student's family," the spokesperson said.
The university said it is now fully assisting the family in handling the aftermath and is closely cooperating with Malaysian authorities, hospitals, and the Chinese Embassy in Malaysia to provide support to the family members.
Earlier, Sepang police chief Assistant Commissioner Norhizam Bahaman confirmed the incident was classified as sudden death (SDR) as investigations found no criminal elements or foul play.

US senator wants Musk to block use of Starlink by financial fraud groups in Southeast Asia
WASHINGTON: A Democratic senator on Monday urged SpaceX CEO Elon Musk to block transnational criminal groups in Southeast Asia from using Starlink satellite internet service to commit fraud against Americans. Senator Maggie Hassan cited recent reports that Starlink is being used to facilitate fraud against Americans by a broad range of transnational criminal organisations operating "scam compounds" in Southeast Asia. The US Treasury Department's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network said these groups defrauded Americans out of billions of dollars, she added. "Scam networks in Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos, however, have apparently continued to use Starlink despite service rules permitting SpaceX to terminate access for fraudulent activity," Hassan wrote in a letter to Musk seen by Reuters. "SpaceX has a responsibility to block criminals from using the service to target Americans." SpaceX did not immediately respond to a request for comment. For years, criminal networks have trafficked hundreds of thousands of people to scam compounds across Southeast Asia, including many along the Thai–Myanmar border, where victims are forced to work in illegal online schemes, according to the United Nations. "While most people have probably noticed the increasing number of scam texts, calls, and emails they're receiving, they may not know that transnational criminals halfway across the world may be perpetrating these scams by using Starlink internet access," Hassan wrote. Since February, Thailand has halted electricity, internet, and fuel supplies to five Myanmar border areas, including Myawaddy, in a bid to disrupt the scam centres, which have become an escalating regional security concern. International pressure to shut down the scam centres intensified following the abduction of Chinese actor Wang Xing, who was kidnapped after arriving in Thailand in January. He was later rescued by Thai police, who located him across the border in Myanmar. Criminal networks, mainly emanating from China, are known to run several of these scam centres, including those in the Myawaddy region, according to the United States Institute of Peace.

Penang welfare dept rescues 20 children in ops abai raid
GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Welfare Department (JKM) has rescued 20 children, including a 15-day-old baby, during a special operation named Ops Abai. The raid took place simultaneously at two locations in Bukit Mertajam on July 21. State Social Development, Welfare and Non-Islamic Affairs Committee chairman Lim Siew Khim said the operation was conducted with the Royal Malaysia Police. Ten boys and ten girls were rescued from a warehouse in an industrial area and a house used as an unregistered learning centre. 'The children rescued are between 15 days and 16 years old, and the infant was found with her biological mother,' Lim said. Investigations revealed that 12 children, including the baby, had no birth certificates. Six had valid identification documents, while two were handed over to their closest guardians. Some children lacked legal guardians and were believed to be deprived of basic necessities like food, clothing, and safe shelter. 'The children have been categorised as needing care and protection under Section 17 of the Child Act 2001,' Lim added during a press conference attended by Penang JKM director Rozita Ibrahim. The operation followed months of monitoring after public complaints last year about children frequently seen entering and exiting the raided premises. Lim, who joined the operation, described the locations as extremely dirty and unsuitable for children. Five adults, believed to be caretakers, were also found and handed to police. The children, speaking Mandarin with limited Malay, are of various nationalities. Some are Malaysian, while others' identities are being verified. All rescued children were placed in government-gazetted safe locations under a Temporary Custody Order from the Bukit Mertajam Magistrate's Court. They were first taken to Seberang Jaya Hospital for health checks. A Special Task Force has been formed to handle documentation and background checks for each child, supported by JKM's strategic partners.
