Columbia Co. Sheriff's Office gives update on deadly officer involved shooting
COLUMBIA COUNTY, Ga. (WJBF) – The Columbia County Sheriff's Office gave an update on Saturday night's deadly officer involved shooting that claimed the life of one deputy and injured another.
That incident happened Saturday around 6:30 p.m. near Exit 194 (Belair Road) on I-20 Westbound.
Investigators say three deputies were attempting to serve a Temporary Protective Order warrant against the suspect, James Blake Montgomery. Columbia County Sheriff Clay Whittle stated during the press conference that Montgomery was initially cooperative during the traffic stop, and that as the three deputies turned to walk back to their vehicle, Montgomery opened fire with a 9mm AR Pistol.
Deputy Brandon Sikes was shot and killed in the incident. Deputy Gavin White was shot in the face.
Columbia County officers then engaged Montgomery as he attempted to flee in the RV, veering off the interstate and into the wire barrier, stopping the vehicle.
The incident left that area of I-20 closed for several hours, Saturday night into Sunday morning.
Sheriff Whittle states that White is in critical condition, but has been able to communicate, saying he has a long road to recovery.
Sikes is survived by his wife, Amber, who is also an employee of the Sheriff's Office.
Montgomery is confirmed to be deceased. Inside his RV, investigators found pipe bombs, bomb making materials, numerous guns and ammo. Jars of an unidentified liquid were also found inside the motor home. Sheriff Whittle stated that Montgomery was involved in the selling of illegal steroids.
Deputies Andrew Brown and Jared Mason both returned fire and Sheriff Whittle says they may have been what killed Montgomery. We won't know for sure until autopsy.
When Brown noticed that White had been shot, he dragged him past several police cars while under fire from the suspect. He got him into another car and drove him directly to Doctors Hospital, while still under gunfire, without calling an ambulance. His quick action is what may have saved White's life.
An autopsy is scheduled at the GBI Crime Lab.

2 arrested and charged with murder in Seminole County shooting
Two people have been arrested and charged with murder in the Monday evening shooting at a home in unincorporated Altamonte Springs, according to the Seminole County Sheriff's Office. The suspects, Tristin Tully Bennette, 18, and Natalia Precious Voltaire, 24, were arrested around 5 p.m. Tuesday during a traffic stop by Altamonte Springs Police officers in the East Altamonte area near Northlake Boulevard, according to a Wednesday news release from the Sheriff's Office. Multiple firearms and other evidence was recovered and the pair were questioned and arrested. Voltaire and Bennette were charged with first-degree murder, robbery with a firearm and grand theft of a firearm. They were booked into the John E. Polk Correctional Facility without bond. Sheriff's deputies responded at 7:48 p.m. Monday to a report of a shooting at 470 Forest Lake Drive, the agency said. Upon arrival, deputies found 19-year-old Nicco Diamante Wong suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The agency's detectives determined the incident was not random and the suspects were known to Wong, the news release said. Based on witness statements and digital evidence, investigators identified Bennette and Voltaire as the suspects. Detectives learned the pair visited the victim's residence under the pretense of helping clean, the agency said. Once inside the house they attempted to steal firearms. During the confrontation, Voltaire shot Wong before fleeing with Bennette in a white Chevrolet Camaro. An alert was issued for the car which resulted in the traffic stop and arrests. The investigation is ongoing and anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact the Seminole County Sheriff's Office at 407-665-6650 or Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS

Aiken fire survivor once lost his legs, now his home
AIKEN, S.C. (WJBF) — A sanitation worker who lost his legs in an accident in Aiken County two years ago now faces a new battle after a housefire destroyed his home. 'I start hearing pops. I kid you not, sound like gunshots pop bang pop,' Matthew Lex recalled. The fire at Matthew's home on Friday, June 6 spread fast. Windows shattered. What sounded like explosions followed. Inside—Matthew, an amputee, fighting to get out. 'I threw my legs off,' he said. I took because my leg was half off. I threw this leg up and I bolted for the back door. The time I got out there, the battery exploded. It sounded like a train locomotive exploded.' 'He was here going down the hill,' neighbor Charlie Stokes Jr. said. 'And we just basically told him he didn't need to go any further, that we would get him, you know, where he needs to be as far as to safety and everything.' Smoke, flames, and water wrecked everything. Matthew's safe space — gone. His wheelchairs and medical gear — destroyed. 'You can see the damage, and this is a picture of our family in Myrtle Beach when my husband and I melted,' his mother Cheryl Welsh showed Shawn. 'And you can see it's melted. So, a lot of memories, a lot of pain in this room because we came here and we watched a lot of movies and spent quality time together. So, this is a very surreal situation. It's painful.' Matthew says the 911 dispatcher was confused—and it took nearly 40 minutes to get help. His family wants to know why the closest fire station did not respond. 'I always have had a concern because even when Matthew was injured in his accident, I'm concerned about Aiken and their timeliness to some of these,' Cheryl added. They're staying with relatives for now but say Matthew's wheelchair makes it tough. They need a more accessible home — and answers. 'It doesn't matter about a district at that time. It matters about life and the sanctity of life and whatever it takes to save lives,' she said. 'We've been through a lot — pinned between a Dodge Caravan, the garbage truck, escaping a burning house. You gotta be brave,' Matthew added. A Go-fund-me has been set up to help the family. You can donate, here. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
