
Calligraphy created by assassin while awaiting execution breaking auction records in South Korea
Revered in the South for his efforts to defend the country against Japanese encroachment, Ahn Jung-geun is best known for his dramatic, high-stakes assassination of Japan's first prime minister, Ito Hirobumi, in 1909 at a train station in Harbin. Ahn shouted "Hurrah for Korea!" as he was arrested, according to the Association for Asian Studies based in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
He was hanged for the killing by Japanese authorities in 1910, just months before Tokyo formally annexed the Korean Peninsula, ushering in a brutal period of occupation that lasted until the end of World War II.
Now, more than a century after his death, the calligraphy Ahn created in his prison cell during his final days — typically at the request of Japanese officials — is drawing fresh attention in Seoul's glitzy art scene.

In South Korea, Ahn's life has long inspired artists across generations, giving rise to a highly celebrated musical, multiple novels, and films — including one starring "Crash Landing on You" actor Hyun Bin.
Ahn was held in his prison cell in China for about 40 days leading up to his execution and he kept himself busy writing an autobiography and making hundreds of calligraphy pieces, including one requested by his own prison guard.
"The court and prison officials, saying they wanted to keep my calligraphy as a memento, brought me hundreds of sheets of silk and paper and asked me to create for them," Ahn wrote in his autobiography. "I ended up spending several hours each day doing calligraphy, even though I wasn't particularly skilled in it."
Even though Ahn had assassinated their top official Ito, the Japanese who took his calligraphy preserved them with care, and some of their descendants have donated them to the South Korean government, which subsequently designated them as national treasures.
Now, more of the calligraphies are surfacing in the private art market, with the latest being auctioned last month in Seoul for 940 million won ($674,098) — more than three times its opening bid.
The piece, which says "green bamboo" — a traditional symbol of integrity — had been owned by a Japanese individual who did not wish to be identified, and they had done an impeccable job preserving it, said Kim Jun-seon, art valuation specialist at Seoul Auction.
"It wasn't even mounted and was still rolled up, but when we opened the case, the scent of ink still lingered in the air," she told AFP.
"Misguided but principled idealist"
Japan said Ahn was a criminal and terrorist and refused to hand over his remains. They have never been located.
Moves to honor Ahn by Seoul and Beijing have previously strained ties with Tokyo, even briefly sparking a diplomatic row in 2013.
In 2014, Japan criticized a memorial built in China to commemorate Ahn, BBC News reported. A Japanese government spokesman branded him a terrorist after the Chinese-Korean memorial hall opened in China's Harbin city, where Ito was shot.
The fact that his Japanese captors preserved his calligraphy "reflects the cultural and political contradictions of early 20th century East Asia," said Eugene Y. Park, a history professor at University of Nevada, Reno.
At his trial, Ahn identified himself as a soldier for Korea, defined his assassination of Ito as a military operation, and envisioned a united East Asia — comprising Korea, China and Japan — somewhat akin to today's European Union.
"Some Japanese may have seen him as a misguided but principled idealist," Park told AFP.

His calligraphy, which focused on values such as peace and ethics, "resonated culturally, even if he opposed them politically," he said.
"At a time when Japan's own imperial identity was unsettled, preserving his works revealed deeper tensions between respect for moral courage and the pursuit of colonial domination."
In 2023, the Global Sae-A Group, a South Korean conglomerate, purchased one of Ahn's calligraphies for a record-breaking 1.95 billion won (nearly $1.4 million).
The piece "Green Bamboo" was sold at auction last month to the family of South Korea's LS Group.
"We expressed our intention to bring the piece back to Korea and share it with the public," Joung Tae-hee at Seoul Auction said, adding that the Japanese owner agreed to sell after hearing their proposal.
Lee Sang-hyun, of the LS Group family, told AFP that his mother "hopes many citizens will be able to see this piece and that it will also be studied," and they are considering donating it to a national institution.
Ahn became a Catholic as a teenager and ends his autobiography with the words of Nicolas Joseph Marie Wilhelm, a French priest and missionary stationed in Korea, who traveled to his prison to see the activist and give him confession.
The priest — who had also baptized Ahn and was a longtime friend — was disciplined for his trip, and was later forced to return to France.
"The gracious lord will never abandon you," Wilhelm told Ahn. "He will surely take you in, so rest your heart and go in peace."

Braissers Rice Bowl: Sub-$10 customisable meat bowls by ex-fine dining chef
I first heard of Braissers Rice Bowl in Tanjong Pagar Plaza Market & Food Centre through its established rival, Meat & Rice. A colleague of mine was raving about the latter's 'dreamy', 'melt-in-your-mouth' braised meats — which, of course, made me curious about how this newer contender would stack up. Braissers Rice Bowl's owner, Wei Jie, is a professionally trained chef who has clocked time in fine dining eateries including Iru Den, Birds of a Feather, Bam! and Le Bistrot du Sommelier. He even cut his hawker teeth at Meat & Rice first, where he helped develop their braised pork rice recipe alongside his friend's father. Now, here's where Braissers takes a different path from Meat & Rice: instead of sticking to a fixed bowl format, Wei Jie lets diners call the shots. At his stall, every bowl starts with a base of short-grain rice, a sous vide egg, tender meat, and salted vegetables, before you customise it with your choice of protein and sides. Not to stir anything up but I just had to find out: could Braissers hold its own against the OG? And more importantly, would its braised meats live up to the hype I've been dying to taste? What I tried at Braissers Rice Bowl I kicked my day off with one of the stall's bestsellers, the Braised Pork Jowl Rice Bowl (S$5.80), and WOW, this bowl looked so good, I could feel my drool threatening to spill over as I was snapping photos. Instead of politely sampling each component one by one, I dove straight in to mix everything together so the rice, meat, and shiitake mushrooms were lightly coated in that glorious, creamy sous vide egg. The pork jowl itself was indeed melt-in-your-mouth tender (who else cheered)! It struck that magical balance of meat and fat that's hard to pull off, and coming from someone who usually picks every scrap of fat off her meat, the fact that I was wolfing this down without hesitation says a lot. The braising sauce was deep, rich, and luxuriously savoury, clinging to each bite with the kind of slow-cooked intensity that can only come from hours on the stove. The salted vegetables were a clever counterpoint, cutting through the richness with a bright, tangy lift in between mouthfuls, while the add-on thick-cut shiitake Mushrooms (S$1) brought an earthy heft that soaked up every last drop of that braising sauce. They were hearty without being overpowering — just enough chew to break up the softness of the pork and egg. In one line, I'd describe this dish as lu rou fan on steroids. Amped up with premium cuts, a luscious sauce, and add-ons that take it beyond your average braised rice bowl. I just wish they hadn't run out of fried wanton skin that day; still a little bummed I missed that extra crunch. Bold x Braised: Tender braised pork belly rice bowls with unique mentaiko version For a more ang moh take on it (as per the owner's words), I went for the Wagyu Beef Bowl (S$9.90) next. Presentation-wise, this one was absolutely gorgeous — the kind of plating that made me pause mid-reach for my chopsticks. Before me lay a neat bed of rice crowned with slices of wagyu, flanked by paper-thin sheets of carrot, radish, and (I think?) pea sprouts. It's this kind of attention to detail that instantly betrays Wei Jie's fine dining past. The wagyu slices sat obediently over the rice, gleaming under the light, and for a moment I genuinely couldn't bring myself to break the picture-perfect arrangement. I did, eventually, and was rewarded with beef so tender it made me wonder how many synonyms for 'tender' I could get away with in one review. Yes, it leaned more towards well-done than medium, which made the softness all the more impressive, especially at a $9.90 price point. Unreal, really. And then came the twist. The beef itself was clean-tasting, free from any gamey notes. But somehow, the rice carried a gamey flavour that caught me off guard. It wasn't gamey in a rice-gone-bad way; it just tasted very much like BEEF. The seasoning was savoury with a hint of sweetness, but that underlying taste became all I could focus on after a few bites. I eventually found myself gravitating back to the pork jowl, leaving the rice in the bowl looking pretty but mostly untouched. Final thoughts Braissers Rice Bowl truly delivers a level of finesse that you rarely find at hawker stalls, thanks to Wei Jie's fine dining roots. The Pork Jowl Bowl stole the show for me — rich, melt-in-your-mouth meat, hearty mushrooms, and a balance of flavours that's perfect for those who love strong flavours. The Wagyu Beef Bowl was undeniably beautiful and tender, though the rice had a gamey note that I'm personally sensitive to, which could be something others might not notice or mind at all. Still, for under $10 a bowl, I was thoroughly impressed by the quality and generous portions. You best believe I'll be back for the chicken and duck next! Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle fans are not too happy about Channing Tatum being cast in the English-language version of the anime film

As new anime movie Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle continues to rule over the Japanese box office, Channing Tatum's casting in the upcoming English-language version has left many Demon Slayer fans confused. The Deadpool & Wolverine star has been cast as Keizo in the English dubbed version of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle. However, many anime fans believe that the casting is not fair to other voice actors in the industry, and feel that Taum has only been cast because he is a big Hollywood name. "There are some [English-language voice actors] who are not happy that Channing Tatum was cast in the latest Demon Slayer movie... and the complaints are 100% valid," said one fan on Twitter (X). "Any VA would and should feel slighted when a big-name actor is cast in an anime role, especially in a movie as big as Infinity Castle." It seems like other fans feel the same, as one replied, "Love Channing Tatum... I just feel this is kinda a slap in the face to everyone else." Another added, "This might potentially be the start of US dubbing companies phasing out actual experienced anime dub actors for Hollywood talent. And that would be a very bad thing." However, other Demon Slayer heads feel that Tatum, who is a fan of the series, deserves a chance. After all, the star is only in a minor role. "But what if he does a completely fine and normal job at it?" pointed out one fan. It is important to note that big actors being cast in anime projects is no new thing, with Robert Pattinson starring in The Boy and the Heron, and Star Wars actor Mark Hamill appearing in the anime series Immortal Grand Prix, just to name two examples. Tatum joins the original English dub voice cast from the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba anime series, including Zach Aguilar as Tanjiro Kamado, Abby Trott as Nezuko Kamado, Aleks Le as Zenitsu Agatsuma, Bryce Papenbrook as Inosuke Hashibira, Johnny Yong Bosch as Giyu Tomikoa and Erika Harlacher as Shinobu Kocho. Directed by Haruo Sotozaki, the movie is the first of an upcoming trilogy based on the Infinity Castle arc from the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba manga. The film follows demon slayer Tanjiro Kamado as he faces his biggest challenge yet when he is plunged into a demon's stronghold known as the Infinity Castle in a bid to save the head of the Corps. It's no Dune sandworm, but Demon Slayer is getting in on the popcorn fun with this Infinity Castle bucket

"I'd prefer it if it looked like me," Galactus actor Ralph Ineson previously told GamesRadar+ of the popcorn bucket. "But yeah, that feels really strange, to be honest. I'm not gonna lie."
