‘Unique festival' returns to Wexford with quirky line-up of exhibitions, circus acts and family fun days
Speaking on this year's festival schedule, festival director Garrett Keogh said, 'We have a long tradition of hands-on workshops. Working side by side with professional artists, young and old have gained skills in writing, performing, making giant puppets, and in painting, photography and film making.
'As a result of these workshops many local writers and musicians had first-time performance and publication opportunities at the festival,' Keogh said. 'Four participants went on to the Institute for Art and Design, two have worked in the arts sector, and some have developed their own arts practices.'
Named 'a unique festival' by the European Festivals' Association, the Gap Arts Festival was nominated for the European Rural Inspiration Award 2019 for its Community Portrait Photographic Project.
'With these workshops, and by commissioning local artists in collaborative projects' Keogh said, 'the Gap Festival is not just about bringing the arts here, but about enabling the community to have ownership of the creations,' said Garrett.
Subh, Dubh, Agus Cnuasach Na Tíre – Jam, Black, And The Fat Of The Land, will be a great chance for adults to be outdoors, enjoy the weather, learn about local fruits and flowers, and how to make jams, vinegars, relishes and chutneys.
Funded and supported by Wexford County Council in partnership with Creative Ireland, artists Garrett Keogh and Caoimhe Dunn will host a series of indoor and outdoor workshops exploring hands-on the traditions, stories and lore of foraging and preserving local wild fruits, the elderflower, bilberry, and blackberry.
''We'll have a local forager and a chef to help. And it doesn't matter how much or how little Irish you have, it'll be fun, a hands-on way for adults to explore, learn and use the language in a friendly, non-school situation,' said Caoimhe.
This year's Music Mentoring will feature guitar, bass, drums and singing. Festival directors are also open to other musical interests and will do their best to accommodate them. Anyone who 12 years old and above who is interested in music is encouraged to get involved with the Gap Arts Festival. Places for both series of workshops are limited, so anyone interested should contact the Gap at gapartsfest@gmail.com.

Programme of events revealed for annual Lady's Island Pilgrimage in Wexford – ‘There's no place more beautiful'
Bishop Ger Nash will do the honours, celebrating mass at 3 p.m. with the Lagoon Junior Choir providing accompaniment, followed by a procession around the island. The castle has been subject to a lot of heritage conservation work of late and Fr Jim Cogley is looking forward to showing off the results to visitors, noting that Wexford County Council has invested 'considerable funding' in the local area of late. Currently in the process of being completed is a stunning mural by Boolavogue artist Monica Gahan, depicting the island on a wall of the castle courtyard. The area in front will provide a facility for those who wish to have loved ones remembered on the Island in the form of a ceramic photo plaque. Enquiries for this can be made on 087-4066977. With a huge amount of work required for pilgrimage season, Fr Jim is fulsome in his praise of the local community. 'The Parish of Lady's Island, although small in size, is blessed with a wonderful team of volunteers that make the pilgrimage possible each year,' he said. 'One team of men and women are responsible for the running of the gift Shop that has a wonderful array of items for sale and is open each day. Another large team take care of the Coffee shop where visitors are welcomed and can enjoy the delights of home baking and refreshments. This too is open daily during pilgrimage season and more volunteers are always welcome.' Fr Jim has revealed that daily services will take place at 3 p.m and 7.30 p.m. with a whole host of different musicians and speakers taking part. After the service on August 15, Fr Jim himself will speak with a focus on healing. 'We are pleased to welcome a return visit from Celine Byrne, one of Ireland's best-known singers, and world-renowned star of opera,' Fr Jim revealed. 'Celine, from Kildare, will be singing and sharing her faith journey on Sunday August 24. Her performance last year was magnificent, but many missed out because of inclement weather.' Celine has performed for three popes, US presidents and has shared a stage with legendary opera singers like Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo and Andrea Bocelli. While a singer with the stars her feet are firmly on the ground as she remains humble, honest about her own struggles, and a strong advocate of healing and mental health. Celine will also launch Fr Cogley's latest two books In the Wood You Believe series, Vol 12 When I befriended my Anger and Vol 13 A World of Symbols. These will also be available to order on Mass the following Sunday, September 7, will be a Diocesan celebration of the Jubilee Year of Hope. At 3 p.m. the All Ireland Peace Choir will perform and afterwards Bishop Nash will dedicate the Wall of Remembrance. The Closing Mass and Candlelight Procession will take place on Monday September 8, at 7 p.m. Among the other changes to this year's programme are the blessing with holy oil which will take place each Wednesday and Friday after 3 p.m. mass; rosary before mass at 7 p.m. on Mondays; prayer around the cross on Fridays after 7.30 p.m. mass. A listening service will also be available with trained personnel after 3 p.m. masses. 'When the weather is smiling and even when its not, there is no place more beautiful than Lady's Island to visit,' Fr Jim says. 'Come and enjoy yourself and be part of a long tradition that has remained unbroken, apart from Cromwell and Covid, for the past 1400 years.'

Final preparations under way for hugely popular Wexford arts festival
Festival organiser Garrett Keogh was inspired by his daughter Rosie to host the doodle event. Rosie owns the events venue Hens Teeth in Dublin and spoke about the origin of the event. She decided to try something fun for the book launch, rather than hosting an ordinary signing. 'We decided to build a Doodle Booth. It's like a photo booth, the kind you sit for a passport, except in this case there's no camera. A person sits into the curtained cubicle, and hidden behind a one-way mirror the artist sketches them. The resulting portrait is then slipped into the out-tray exactly as a photo would,' Rosie said. Garrett said the festival bring the unique and unexpected to Wexford. 'It's a long way from Toronto rap and gangsta music to north Wexford, but that's a part of what we do at the Gap Festival.' This year, award winning, animator and artist and author, Aileen Crossley will join Garrett Keogh at the festival to host the popular cartoon booth. Aileen recently moved to Tinahely and came across the festival and was eager to get involved. Heavily involved in the art scene, Aileen recently published a picture book which included scenes of Wexford, including Cahore Point and pier. Garrett Keogh, organiser of the Gap Arts Festival was just as surprised to hear from Aileen. Last week he said he was about to use equipment and wood from the cartoon booth for their upcoming play Shep but randomly decided not to. 'Then out of the blue, the next morning I had an email from someone I didn't know. She just happened to be Aileen Crossley, she'd seen the website and offered to get involved. 'Call it serendipity, or perhaps there's a touch of 'build it and they will come' from the 1989 film Field of Dreams, but either way the Gap Cartoon Booth and Aileen Crossley will be a further treat for families at the Festival's Grand Finale,' Garrett added. Aileen will be joined by two choirs, from Askamore and Ballyfad, the Gorey Ukes, and the Kindred Folk. Refreshments will also be provided from the Subh Dubh workshop on Sunday, August 10. The Gap Arts Festival is set to kick off on Thursday, August 7 with a wide range of activities for all the family to enjoy.

‘Fleadh holds a special place in my heart' – President Michael D Higgins launches festival in Wexford
Hosted by Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann and the Wexford Fleadh Executive Committee, the celebration of Irish traditional music, dance, and culture has returned to Wexford town for the second time. More than 5,000 competitors, 750,000 visitors and numerous performers are expected to descend on Wexford Town for a week of ceol, spraoi and community spirit. While addressing the crowds on Wexford's quay front on Sunday, President Higgins praised the festival for its cultural importance. 'This will be my final occasion opening the Fleadh Cheoil, mar Uachtarán na hÉireann, a festival that holds a special place in my heart and in the hearts of the Irish people, both at home and abroad,' he said. 'As President of Ireland, I would like to say how immensely proud I am of the rich and vibrant Irish traditional music scene that continues to flourish. "We are in the midst of deeply creative period in our music, a folk musical revival fuelled by a resurgence of interest among young people who are embracing traditional music with enthusiasm, passion, creativity and talent. "The Fleadh Cheoil is a perfect example of this vibrant scene, and the perfect platform to showcase such talent,' he added. Cathaoirleach of Wexford County Council, Cllr Joe Sullivan, said it was 'a proud day for our county". "The Fleadh is a powerful expression of who we are as a people — rooted in community, creativity, and a shared love of music and tradition,' he said. The events will run until Sunday, including concerts, street sessions, performances, culminating with the competitions from Friday. ADVERTISEMENT The director of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann, Labhras O'Murchú, said the Fleadh is 'more than a festival'. "It is the finest display of who we are as a community and a nation,' he said. "As we approach the 75th year of Comhaltas, it gives me great pleasure to see the road we have travelled, the great joy our traditions bring to so many people and how they connect us around the world.' This year's festival will also see a new stage introduced as an initiative run by the Gaelgeoirí, building on the back of last year's success in an area dedicated specifically to the Irish language. The Seachtain na Gaeilge area based in Selskar is a cultural space where an Ghaeilge will be central to the festival. The event organiser, Darren Ó Ceallaigh, said: 'everyone is welcome to attend and use their cúpla focal'. "Everything we have planned will be accessible for everyone, there's no fear of a language barrier, and you absolutely do not have to be fluent to attend our events,' he said.
