Danish pair shock Wei Chong-Kai Wun in Thai Open

PETALING JAYA: Men's doubles shuttlers Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun endured a setback ahead of the Malaysian Masters next week after suffering a disappointing second round exit in the Thailand Open.
Wei Chong-Kai Wun were stunned 21-15, 19-21, 18-21 by Denmark's world No. 75 William Kryger-Christian Faust at the Nimibutr Stadium in Bangkok on Thursday (May 15).
The world No. 7 pair were hoping for a good outing before the home tourney but struggled in the second and third games against the spirited Danes before losing in 46 minutes.
"We didn't prepare well enough to face this pair. Some of their shots were tricky and we were caught off guard," Kai Wun lamented in a post match interview with the Badminton World Federation (BWF).
"This is the first time we are playing in this venue where the shuttle in the stadium was fast and we could not control well."
It was Wei Chong-Kai Wun fourth straight early round exit in individual tournaments after the duo also suffered the same fate in the Orleans Masters, All-England and Asian Championships.
Despite showing signs of progress earlier in the year after capturing the Indonesian Masters title and reaching the semi-finals in the Malaysian Open in January, Wei Chong admitted that the pair are still struggling with inconsistency.
"Europeans and Asians play different styles and our opponents played well today (yesterday) while our performances are still not consistent," said Wei Chong.
Meanwhile, national No. 2 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik earlier had survived a close battle to book their spot in the second round.
World No. 5 Aaron-Wooi Yik were taken the distance by world No. 56 Fench pair Julien Maio-William Villeger before using their experience to prevail 22-24, 21-19, 21-15 in 62 minutes.
The reigning Asian champions will face Japan's world No. 36 Hiroki Midorikawa-Kyohei Yamashita next for a place in the last eight.

The world No. 4 pair looked down and out after losing the first game 12-21 but showed great fighting spirit and mental fortitude to storm back to claim 21-17, 21-11 victories in the next two games at the Istora Senayan in Jakarta yesterday. Pearly attributed the breakthrough win to the pair's patient approach. "We kept reminding each other to be patient. We didn't want to rush. We just wanted to enjoy the game, whether win or lose," Pearly told the Badminton World Federation (BWF). "Our change in mindset was the turning point for us. We grew in confidence and that helped us win today (yesterday)." The win meant a lot for Pearly and Thinaah after previously struggling to even reach the last four in a Super 1000 tourney. "Words cannot describe how happy we are today (yesterday). From one game down, we really supported each other and we didn't want to give up easily," said Thinaah. "I'm very thankful to Pearly for her accurate smashes. We have been encouraging each other a lot in this tournament and before as well but today (yesterday) was a crucial point because it was not only about the strategy but also the mental and physical aspects. "I'm really thankful to have Pearly on my side." Pearly-Thinaah have avenged their defeat to Yijing-Xuomin after losing in straight games to the duo in the China Open first round last September. The pair have now reached their third final of the year after capturing the Thailand Open last month and finishing runners-up in the Indonesian Masters in January. Standing in Pearly-Thinaah's way in their bid to land the biggest title of their careers so far will be either Yijing-Xuomin's teammates, world No. 1 Liu Shengshu-Tan Ning or South Korea's world No. 3 Baek Ha-na-Lee So-hee. Pearly-Thinaah are out to emulate 2009 champions Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty, who were the only Malaysians previously to triumph in the women's doubles in the Indonesian Open. On their approach for the final, Thinaah said: "We want to have a relaxed mind and we just want to stay calm. "We have to remember each other's strengths and weaknesses and stay patient."

Pearly-Thinaah make superb comeback to enter Indonesia Open final

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : National women's doubles shuttlers Pearly Tan-M Thinaah stormed into the final of the Indonesia Open in Jakarta this evening after defeating their Chinese opponents, making it their third final appearance this season. The world No 4 pair, who won the Thai Open title last month, had to labour for 63 minutes before beating Li Yi Jing-Luo Xu Min 12-21, 21-17, 21-11 in a match that saw them take an 8-0 lead in the decider before emerging as winners. An epic showdown awaits Pearly-Thinaah in the final as their opponents will either be world No 1 pair Liu Sheng Shu-Tan Ning from China or South Korea's world No 3 duo Baek Ha Na-Lee So Hee. These pairs have always been difficult opponents for the Malaysians. Today's win marks the third time that Pearly-Thinaah will be playing in a final this season. Their first final appearance was also at the Istora Stadium in Jakarta during the Indonesia Masters in January, where they lost to South Korea's Kim Hye Jeong-Kong Hee-Yong. Last month, they won the Super 500 Thailand Open, and now, they are in the hunt for their first title in the Super 1000 series, which offers a total prize money of US$1.45 million (RM6.13 million). Postecoglou sacked by Spurs despite ending trophy drought

(AP pic) LONDON : Ange Postecoglou was sacked as Tottenham manager on Friday, just 16 days after the Australian ended the club's 17-year trophy drought by winning the Europa League. Postecoglou led Tottenham to a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in Bilbao to clinch the north Londoners' first European prize in 41 years and secure a place in next season's Champions League. But the Australian paid the price for Tottenham's worst domestic season since they were relegated from the top flight in 1976-77. 'Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the Club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties,' a statement on Tottenham's official X account said. Exactly two years after he was hired from Celtic, Postecoglou's eventful spell in north London was brought to a ruthless end by chairman Daniel Levy. Tottenham lost 22 of their 38 Premier League games to finish 17th in the table, above only relegated trio Leicester, Ipswich and Southampton. 'The Board has unanimously concluded that it is in the best interests of the club for a change to take place,' the statement said. Brentford boss Thomas Frank, Fulham manager Marco Silva, Crystal Palace chief Oliver Glasner and Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola are reportedly the leading candidates to replace Postecoglou. Postecoglou made a blistering start to his Tottenham career, earning rave reviews for his 'Angeball' style of attacking play. However, a string of defeats at the end of the season blew a golden opportunity to qualify for the Champions League. In September 2024, Postecoglou boldly stated that he 'always wins things' in his second year. He delivered on that pledge but even the euphoria from the Europa League win could not save him from the axe. Postecoglou had largely retained the support of his players and Tottenham defender Pedro Porro saluted his efforts. 'Thank you for everything, boss. I'll always be grateful for the way you led us, defended us, and kept us going through all the highs and lows,' Porro said. 'Above everything, you gave us one of the greatest moments in the club's history and for that, you'll always be celebrated.'
