Pearly-Thinaah make superb comeback to enter Indonesia Open final

PETALING JAYA : National women's doubles shuttlers Pearly Tan-M Thinaah stormed into the final of the Indonesia Open in Jakarta this evening after defeating their Chinese opponents, making it their third final appearance this season.
The world No 4 pair, who won the Thai Open title last month, had to labour for 63 minutes before beating Li Yi Jing-Luo Xu Min 12-21, 21-17, 21-11 in a match that saw them take an 8-0 lead in the decider before emerging as winners.
An epic showdown awaits Pearly-Thinaah in the final as their opponents will either be world No 1 pair Liu Sheng Shu-Tan Ning from China or South Korea's world No 3 duo Baek Ha Na-Lee So Hee. These pairs have always been difficult opponents for the Malaysians.
Today's win marks the third time that Pearly-Thinaah will be playing in a final this season. Their first final appearance was also at the Istora Stadium in Jakarta during the Indonesia Masters in January, where they lost to South Korea's Kim Hye Jeong-Kong Hee-Yong.
Last month, they won the Super 500 Thailand Open, and now, they are in the hunt for their first title in the Super 1000 series, which offers a total prize money of US$1.45 million (RM6.13 million).
Pearly-Thinaah have won a total of four BWF World Tour titles to date.
The winners of the doubles events tomorrow will earn US$107,300 (RM452, 289), and the runners-up US$50,750 (RM214,520). The semi-finalists take home US$20,300 (RM85,898).

They lost to the 8th-ranked pair Sabar Karyaman Gutama-Reza Pahlevi Isfahani 18-21, 21-12, 18-21 in a 59-minute match that was marred by the crowd booing each time the Malaysians served. The defeat was their second in three encounters between the two pairs, and dashed Wei Chong-Kai Wun's hopes of winning another title in Jakarta this year after the Indonesia Master's victory in January. Despite the loss, Wei Chong-Kai Wun can hold their heads high as this is their fourth semi-final appearance while they have also won two titles this season, the Indonesia Masters and Malaysia Masters. They have so far won five career titles and were runners-up three times, including in the World Tour Super 1000 series Indonesia Open last year. As beaten semi-finalists in the Indonesia Open, the Malaysian duo take home US$20,300 (RM85,898). In tomorrow's final, the Indonesian pair will either face compatriots Fajar Alfian-Rian Ardianto or Kim Won Ho-Seo Seung Jae from South Korea.

No Senayan heroics for Wei Chong-Kai Wun this time
KUALA LUMPUR: Men's doubles Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun's heroics at the Istora Senayan were not enough this time. They fell 21-18, 12-21, 21-18 in the Indonesia Open semi-finals to homesters Sabar Karyaman-Moh Reza Isfahani, the world No. 8, on Saturday. The world No. 7 Malaysian pair lost narrowly in an hour. Wei Chong-Kai Wun had beaten Sabar-Reza at the same stage at the iconic venue last year. And in January, Wei Chong-Kai Wun hit a high to capture the Indonesia Masters at Istora Senayan. Despite the setback this time, Wei Chong-Kai Wun have really done well this season as they have also won the Malaysia Masters last month, upstaging their illustrious compatriots Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik. At the sidelines, Sabar-Reza's coach, Hendra Setiawan, got the better of his former mentor Herry IP, who is currently Malaysia's men's doubles chief. Under Herry, Hendra won the 2008 Olympic gold with Markis Kido and secured multiple world titles with Mohammad Ahsan. The pair, currently ranked 4th in the world, displayed composure in the deciding set, overcoming the 6th-ranked Chinese duo with excellent play and solid communication, before finishing with a 21-12, 17-21, 21-11 victory. They also received strong cheers throughout the 64-minute match from the hostile crowd in the arena at Istora Senayan, Central Jakarta. 'We are very happy because we managed to change the rhythm of the game to our advantage. We supported each other and communicated well, which greatly helped our win today,' said Pearly. The pair also expressed satisfaction but believe there is still much room for improvement heading into their second final appearance in Indonesia. Pearly and Thinaah succumbed to South Korean pair Kong Hee Yong-Kim Hye Jeon in the final of the Indonesia Masters last January during a three-set encounter 12-21, 21-17, 18-21. 'For now, we want to get enough rest, discuss with our coach, and focus on recovery,' she added. Pearly and Thinaah will face either world number 1 pair Liu Sheng Shu-Tan Ning from China or world number 3 ranked Baek Ha Na-Lee So Hee from South Korea, who will be playing tonight.
