MITI: Only locally made rubber gloves eligible for export

The Sun02-05-2025
PUTRAJAYA: Companies that export rubber gloves must ensure that the entire manufacturing process of their products takes place within the country in order to qualify for the certificate of origin issued by the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), said Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani.
Only products that are fully processed and produced domestically are permitted for export in line with Malaysia's commitment to international trade partners such as the United States, he said.
'We will not allow rubber gloves that are produced abroad to be brought into Malaysia merely for changing containers and the original documents before being re-exported. That does not involve local manufacturing and cannot be accepted,' he told the media after officiating the Malaysian Palm Oil Board's (MPOB) Silver Jubilee Gala Night here today.
Also present were MPOB chairman Datuk Mohamad Helmy Othman Basha and MPOB director-general Datuk Dr Ahmad Parveez Ghulam Kadir.
According to Johari, Malaysia currently produces around 348,000 metric tonnes of rubber annually, far lower than the industry's requirement of over one million metric tonnes. Therefore, raw materials such as latex from Thailand are still allowed to be imported, as they are fully processed domestically before becoming end products.
'What's important is that the processing occurs here. We do not want Malaysia to become a hub for trade diversion involving finished products from other countries. This is to protect the reputation and sustainability of the local rubber industry,' he said.
Last week, the Plantation and Commodities Ministry announced that only rubber glove exporters licensed by the Malaysian Rubber Board are allowed to export products sourced from local manufacturers effective immediately.
It said the move was taken to safeguard product quality and to prevent Malaysia from being used as an export route for finished products from other countries.

Malaysia Sees ASEAN As Strategic Growth Region Amid Global Challenges

BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 ( Bernama) — Malaysia views ASEAN as a region with vast untapped potential -- poised to become a dynamic engine of growth and resilience amid global uncertainties, according to the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI). MITI Deputy Secretary General (Trade) Mastura Ahmad Mustafa said ASEAN is more than just a large market, it is a reservoir of innovation, creativity and energy with a population nearing 700 million, almost one third of whom are youth. 'Our demographic dividend, coupled with a rapidly growing consumer class, rising connectivity and accelerating digital adoption, gives ASEAN a unique advantage. 'If nurtured in accordance with the principles of sustainability and inclusivity, these strengths will not only fortify our region's growth but also position ASEAN to play a defining role in shaping the future of the global economy,' she said in her speech at the welcome dinner for the Senior Economic Officials' Meeting (SEOM) 3/56 and Related Meetings today. Under the ASEAN chairmanship, Mastura said Malaysia is working to deepen regional integration, strengthen supply chain resilience, foster sustainable and responsible investment and advance digital innovation. 'More importantly, we are committed to creating opportunities for businesses of all sizes, especially micro, small and medium enterprises to participate meaningfully in ASEAN's growth story,' she added. In a separate statement, MITI said key discussions at SEOM 3/56 focused on Malaysia's Priority Economic Deliverables under its 2025 ASEAN chairmanship; updates on the 2025 Annual Priorities under the AEM/SEOM purview; implementation of ASEAN agreements; advancement of the Digital Economy Framework Agreemen; and ASEAN's sustainability agenda, including carbon neutrality, circular economy, and the ASEAN Power Grid. MITI is hosting the SEOM 3/56 and Related Meetings from Aug 18 to 23 in Kuala Lumpur. The ministry said that discussions with ASEAN Dialogue Partners focused on reviewing progress and addressing key issues related to the implementation of existing Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), as well as the status of work plans and ongoing economic cooperation initiatives.

Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz confirmed the facility now establishes the nation as the AI Centre of Excellence for the entire ASEAN region. This landmark achievement stems from a strategic collaboration between YTL Power International Bhd and technology leader NVIDIA. The partnership focuses on developing cutting-edge AI infrastructure powered entirely by green energy solutions. Tengku Zafrul highlighted the project's immense scale and transformative potential for the local economy. This mega project worth RM10 billion will not only create Malaysia's own large language model (LLM), but will also stimulate the growth of local talent and expertise. He further emphasised the significant job creation this initiative will drive across the high-tech sector. The development is set to generate substantial demand for specialised positions such as data scientists and AI engineers. The minister's Facebook post provided crucial context regarding the project's prestigious backing. Negeri Sembilan investment strong mid-year 2025, says MB

SEREMBAN: Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun is confident that the state is on the right track to achieve its RM10 billion investment target for 2025. This confidence is driven by a strong influx of new investments recorded in the first half of the year. Aminuddin said the state is also expected to attract further investments in the second half of the year. This includes potential investment from a semiconductor company from China. He noted that Gobuilders Netsoft Sdn Bhd had already committed investments during the first quarter. He added that in October, the state government will launch a major industrial project. This launch is in conjunction with the ASEAN Summit. The project is to be developed within the Malaysia Vision Valley (MVV) 2.0 corridor. 'Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is also scheduled to officiate the launch of a new national armoured vehicle manufacturing plant. This will occur during the MADANI Rakyat Programme (PMR) 2025 Negeri Sembilan. The event will take place this Saturday,' Aminuddin said after chairing the state executive council meeting. Asked about the total investment figures for the first half of the year, he said that the official numbers would be announced by the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI). This is because several projects are still pending federal-level approvals. Aminuddin also addressed concerns about the impact of the United States' retaliatory tariff policies. He stated that no foreign investors have withdrawn from the state so far. 'To date, no foreign investors have pulled out or halted their investments here. The imposed tariffs have had minimal impact on investment flows, as the rates are not excessively high. As a result, Malaysia remains a preferred destination for investors in the region. 'That is why we continue to see more investors entering the country. This strengthens our confidence that Negeri Sembilan remains one of the top investment destinations,' Aminuddin said. - Bernama
