England hammer Wales to cruise into Euro 2025 quarter-finals

Georgia Stanway opened the scoring with a 13th-minute penalty before Ella Toone, handed her second start in Switzerland, doubled the scoring in the 21st minute, and also contributed two assists.
Lauren Hemp made it three inside the opening half hour, Russo got on the scoresheet in the 44th minute and substitute Beth Mead made it five before Hannah Cain clawed one back with Wales' second-ever goal in a major tournament.

Substitute Aggie Beever-Jones then struck her first goal of the competition for an assured England, who will face Sweden in Zurich on Thursday after finishing as runners-up to France in Group D.
England boss Sarina Wiegman named an unchanged starting line-up, while Rhian Wilkinson made three changes for Wales.
Olivia Clark was preferred in goal, Rhiannon Roberts returned to the defence and Carrie Jones – whose goal against the Republic of Ireland in December helped Wales qualify for Switzerland – was handed her first start of the tournament.
England were initially awarded just a free-kick when Stanway was tripped by Jones, but given a penalty after a lengthy VAR review concluded the foul had been committed inside the area.
Clark guessed right, but, diving to her right, could not stop the Bayern Munich midfielder from firing England one step closer to the quarters.

Jess Fishlock, who on Wednesday night became the first Welsh woman to score a goal in a major tournament, then tried for a second, firing over the crossbar from distance.
Toone made it two after Roberts' clearance caught Stanway, falling favourably for Russo to dig out and round Clark before finding the Manchester United midfielder.
Toone's first attempt was cleared off the line by Lily Woodham but came straight back, and she delivered at the second time of asking.
Wales captain Angharad James called Hannah Hampton into a save, but it was not long before Toone turned provider, whipping in a cross for Hemp to nod home at the back post to make it three on the half hour.

Russo, who contributed three assists against the Netherlands on Wednesday night, then made it four, Toone adding another assist after latching onto a pass from Lauren James before picking out the unmarked Arsenal striker, who took her time before planting the ball into the bottom left.
Wales had a few opportunities to claw a goal back in added time, first from Rachel Rowe, whose attempt was just high, then Fishlock, who could not take advantage after Hampton gifted her the ball.
Wiegman had already replaced Hemp with Mead and handed Jess Park – who came on for Toone – her first minutes of the tournament to start the second half.
The England boss made more changes before the hour, introducing Chloe Kelly and Beever-Jones for James and Russo.

And it was a pair of substitutes who combined for England's fifth, when Beever-Jones pivoted before finding Mead, who side-stepped Roberts and added her name to the scoresheet with a bottom-right finish.
Wales were running out of time to make more history, but seized on the opportunity, when Fishlock added the first major tournament assist in Wales women's history with a superb threaded pass to substitute Cain, who found the top corner with the most stylish goal of the night.
Beever-Jones then made it six with her maiden major tournament goal, assisted by Mead, while an excellent Clark save denied Keira Walsh late on.

England Lionesses return home after partying until 4am to celebrate Euro 2025 win

England are bringing football home again as the Lionesses begin their journey back from Euro 2025 with the trophy in hand. Sarina Wiegman's side made history by becoming the first senior England team in the men's or women's game to win a major tournament on foreign soil, and the first to successfully defend a title following their Euros triumph in 2022. The Lionesses did it the hard way, too, coming from behind in all three of their knockout matches. They were the comeback queens in the quarter-finals, semi-finals and Sunday's emotionally draining final against Spain. England were 1-0 down at half-time against the world champions following Mariona Caldentey's well-taken header. But Alessia Russo emphatically replied with a header of her own soon after the break to draw Wiegman's team level in Basel, Switzerland. After a tense ending to the 90 minutes, the Lionesses had to dig in during extra-time and take the game to penalties. Hannah Hampton's goalkeeping heroics allowed Chloe Kelly to once again score the decisive spot-kick and get the party started. England's players and staff partied long into the night, with some staying out until 4am. Champagne was gleefully guzzled until the early hours and the players had a go on karaoke. Now the Lionesses have left their hotel in Zurich and are heading back to London ahead of Tuesday's parade. They were also accompanied by an animal companion, Reggie the Cavapoo, a dog owned by Cheals on Wheels who joined the team in Switzerland during their campaign. Who was your Player of the Tournament? Let us know your pick in the comments section. The open-top bus procession along the Mall will start at 12.10pm on Tuesday. There'll then be a staged ceremony at the Queen Victoria Memorial in front of Buckingham Palace. Lisa Nandy, the secretary of state for culture, media and sport, said: "The Lionesses' incredible win has done our country proud. Now, we have the chance to cheer these heroes home at their homecoming parade." Fans can attend the parade for free but it'll be broadcast live on the BBC, ITV and Sky. Prime Minister Keir Starmer congratulated the team on X, saying: "Champions! Congratulations Lionesses - what a team. What a game. What drama. You dug deep when it mattered most and you've made the nation proud. History makers." King Charles also sent his 'heartfelt congratulations'. "For more years than I care to remember, England fans have sung that famous chant 'football's coming home'," the King added. "As you return home with the trophy you won at Wembley three years ago, it is a source of great pride that through sporting skill and awesome teamwork, the Lionesses have made those words ring true." Chief executive of the FA, Mark Bullingham, added: "Our history-making Lionesses are Champions of Europe for the second successive time, and have become the first England Senior team in history to win a tournament overseas. "We are so proud of all of the players, Sarina and the support team who have all been part of this incredible achievement. They have all worked unbelievably hard and we know the nation shares our pride. "The victory celebration in London on Tuesday will give England fans an opportunity to celebrate with the players, and be part of history. We've had amazing support from our fans both in Switzerland and at home throughout the tournament, and we look forward to celebrating together and creating some lifelong memories." Princess Charlotte sparks frenzy with behind-the-scenes photos from Lionesses' win

Princess Charlotte was on hand to cheer on the Lionesses as they roared to victory in the final of Euro 2025 - and she was captured in a series of behind-the-scenes shots with dad Prince William before the big match Princess Charlotte went through a rollercoaster of emotions as she watched the Lionesses roar to victory in the Euro 2025 final. ‌ The 10-year-old was pictured in the stands alongside her dad, Prince William, as they faced the agony of seeing England go 1-0 down to Spain before the ecstasy of them bringing it back level and then winning a nail-biting penalty shoot-out. But it seems it wasn't just Charlotte's facial expressions as she watched the match that sparked a frenzy - so did snaps showing her behind-the-scenes with William before the game. ‌ Before they made their way out to the stands, the father-daughter duo were introduced to members of the Spanish Royal Family, Princess Leonor and Princess Sofia. ‌ The sisters were also in Switzerland to cheer on their country, and pictures shared on social media by the Spanish Royal Family show the princess all meeting for the first time. Like William, Leonor is heir to the throne, while Sofia is the second daughter of King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain. And many on X were delighted to see that young princesses all got to meet before the match, with one fan saying: "Beautiful seeing Princess Charlotte with Crown Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia." ‌ Another wrote: "This is a great photo. Princess Charlotte has them all laughing! I hope she and Princess Leonor will develop a strong friendship." While one fan added: "Today's photo is historic. How lovely to see these young princesses together." And it seems the trio continued to hit it off in the stands, with Charlotte at one point appearing to share a joke with Leonor. After the Lionesses claimed their victory, William and Charlotte issued a message to the England team on the Kensington Royal social media accounts. ‌ The father-daughter duo wrote: "What a game! Lionesses, you are the champions of Europe, and we couldn't be prouder of the whole team. Enjoy this moment, England. W & Charlotte." Also applauding the Lionesses on social media was King Charles, who said: 'This brings you, your manager and all your support team my most heartfelt congratulations on winning the Euros 2025. For more years than I care to remember, England fans have sung that famous chant 'football's coming home'. ‌ 'As you return home with the trophy you won at Wembley three years ago, it is a source of great pride that, through sporting skill and awesome teamwork, the Lionesses have made those words ring true. For this, you have my whole family's warmest appreciation and admiration. 'More than that, though, you have shown through your example over the past weeks that there are no setbacks so tough that defeat cannot be transformed into victory, even as the final whistle looms. Well done, Lionesses. The next task is to bring home the World Cup in 2027 if you possibly can!"

Ryan Reynolds is paying stars Premier League wages as surprising 'Wrexham tax' claim made

A Wrexham director has lifted the lid on how the club's Hollywood owners are paying top-level wages to attract star players as they prepare for the Championship Wrexham are splashing out Premier League wages in their bid to compete in the Championship, a club director has revealed. The Red Dragons have been busy in the transfer market this summer after making six new signings. ‌ Plymouth striker Ryan Hardie, former Leicester goalkeeper Danny Ward and Empoli left-back Liberato Cacace were their first three arrivals after Wrexham were promoted to the second tier in April. They were followed by Bolton captain George Thomason, ex-Sheffield Wednesday forward Josh Windass and Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O'Brien, who all joined last week. ‌ More new recruits are expected to follow before Wrexham 's opening league game away at Southampton as manager Phil Parkinson looks to strengthen his squad. Club director Shaun Harvey has now lifted the lid on how the Welsh side's Hollywood owners, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, are paying top level salaries to entice players to the Racecourse Ground. ‌ Speaking on former Wrexham and Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster's Fozcast podcast, he said: "Our model has always been, we wanted to sign players that were at least used to playing one division higher than we were playing in. "If we're going to do that now, we're signing players who are Premier League quality and they want Premier League wages. If you're looking at signing players from the top end of the Championship to help you on your journey, they're earning fortunes more. "Our wage bill per month now will be more than we paid for the whole time we were in the National League." Despite the significant outlay, Harvey remarkably claimed the club is no longer having to fork out additional premiums as often to convince new signings to join. The ex-EFL chief executive said the so-called "Wrexham tax" - which saw the club having to offer a financial sweetener for players to drop down divisions - was a thing of the past. "That was worse in League One and League Two than it is in the Championship, and this will be a surprise to a lot of people," he said. "We were having to persuade players who were better than the standard of the division we were playing in to drop down to play." ‌ O'Brien, Wrexham's latest recruit, has spoken openly about the factors which persuaded him to join the club. It followed the Red Dragons fending off interest from several of their Championship rivals to secure his signature. "It's kind of crazy what's happened at Wrexham, it's surreal really," the 26-year-old midfielder told The Leader. "I've watched the Disney programme and it's like a Disney story - the third oldest club in the world having back-to-back-to-back promotions. ‌ "Once you see that and hear the club want to sign you, you want to be part of it. I'm absolutely buzzing. It's been a long time coming but to finally be here feels great." He added: "The last couple of years has been a bit of a whirlwind for me and my family but to sign somewhere I can call home is a great feeling. We've just had a little girl so we'll definitely be looking to move to the area. "I ended the season with Swansea and I've had a couple of spells in America so now it's time to find somewhere we can call home."
