Hibbard: 'Fantastic' Tandy should get long-term deal
Former Wales hooker Richard Hibbard has given his backing to Steve Tandy for the role of Wales' new national men's head coach, advocating for a long-term deal that extends over two World Cup cycles.

The WRU is eyeing Scotland defence coach Tandy as the full-time replacement for Warren Gatland, who departed during the Six Nations.
With the national team currently enduring a record 17-Test losing streak and having tumbled to 12th in the world rankings, Hibbard believes Tandy should be secured with a contract lasting until 2031, to encompass not just the next World Cup in Australia in 2027 but also the one hosted by the United States in 2031. "I would love Steve to come in and it would be a fantastic appointment," Hibbard told the BBC. "This is not going to be a quick fix. This is almost a two World Cup cycle and that is what you have to give him.

"You can't expect results to improve overnight. He has to build, not just the current squad but also the conveyor belt behind it. Until we get that right, it is an impossible task for anybody."
Cardiff wing eligible for Wales
Cardiff's English-born winger Gabriel Hamer-Webb has confirmed that he is eligible for Wales.
The Bath-born 24-year-old, who joined Cardiff in 2023, had previously represented England at under-20s level. Asked whether he qualifies for Wales, he said: "My mother was born here in Cardiff. No one's asked yet. I'm available. I've got no holidays planned. I'll have to wait. I can't say anything on that yet."

Hamer-Webb crossed for a Judgement Day hat-trick at the weekend during the win over the Ospreys. He hopes it will act as a springboard for him to really kick on now for the Arms Park outfit.
"It's my first one. In my six years of being professional, it's my first one," he said of the hat-trick. "Jockey [Matt Sherratt] says it's the best stadium in the world and I can't argue with that.
"Before I came here, I had a point to prove. I did my due diligence, waited for my opportunity and I think it's paying off now. I'm enjoying being around this group and I think we can definitely take it places."

Former South Africa coach dies
Norman Mbiko, the last captain of the African Springboks and former head coach of South Africa's sevens team, has died aged 79.
The former scrum-hallf - who made 30 national appearances for the side he captained from 1969 - passed away in the early hours of Tuesday morning, following a long illness..
During his playing career, he faced the British & Irish Lions as well as England, Italy and the All Blacks, while he also led Eastern Province against Wales in Newport.

After he retired from playing, Mbiko became South Africa's first black senior national coach post-rugby unity when he took charge of the Blitzboks. He later mentored Uganda's Sevens squad and supported South Africa's Women's team at the Rugby World Cup Sevens in Dubai in 2009.
In 2011, he served as team manager of the Emerging SA Sevens squad, a role which saw him help to nurture future Springboks such as Willie le Roux and Cornal Hendricks. Join WalesOnline Rugby's WhatsApp Channel here to get the breaking news sent straight to your phone for free
Paying tribute to Mbiko, SA Rugby President Mark Alexander said: 'To call Norman a trailblazer is an understatement.

"Despite growing up in turbulent times, his passion for rugby shone through. In the townships, where floodlights were absent, Norman and his friends played into the night using car headlights to illuminate the field—such was their dedication to the sport.'
Alexander added: "He played a massive role in shaping South African rugby, and his passing is a huge loss to our sport. A kind, modest man, he will forever be remembered as a pioneer who dedicated his life to rugby.
"We are proud and grateful for his legacy, which remains woven into the fabric of South African rugby. SA Rugby extends its deepest condolences to Mbiko's family, friends, and former teammates. His contributions will never be forgotten.'

Wade opens up on shock rugby league switch
Christian Wade has attributed his impending cross-code switch from Gloucester to Wigan Warriors to the evolving nature of the Premiership.
The 33-year-old, who previously played for Wasps and Racing 92, will join Wigan later this summer, following the conclusion of the 2024-25 Premiership season with Gloucester.
His move follows a stint playing American football for the Buffalo Bills as part of the NFL's International Player Pathway from 2019, a route which preceded Louis Rees-Zammit's shock career change. Wade returned to rugby union three years later, however, without making a regular season appearance.

"There were some opportunities but the lay of the land in the Premiership has changed quite a lot, especially since I left in 2018," he told the BBC.
"I think there are quite a few people in my position with my sort of age and experience where, unless you've been at a club your whole career, there are some difficulties around extending contracts and stuff like that.
"Since Covid, the salary cap has been lowered but also [finances] in general. I think that's why you see people exploring opportunities outside the Premiership."

Wade, who made his debut in 2011, has had a diverse playing career. He spent eight years with Wasps and also had a spell with French side Racing 92 after his NFL journey ended and before his return to the Premiership.
"I don't think there's too much of a difference, which I don't know is a good or a bad thing. Because being away [from the Premiership] for seven years, you would like to see the game progress on a bit more," he shared.
"It seems as though there are fewer international stars for one. When I was at Wasps, we had a lot of people from different parts of the world.

"A lot of young guys were coming through and as you can see now, they're spread around the league. But it's a good thing as well to see some homegrown talent and rugby being played.
"I would have liked to have seen the game progress a lot more in the span of almost a decade."

South Pacific tour ‘crucial' to Scotland seeding for World Cup

The Scots kick off with a match against the Maori All Blacks in Whangarei, New Zealand on July 5 before they take on Fiji a week later, with the match marking Scotland's first game on Fijian soil since 2017. In their final game, Scotland take on Samoa in Auckland, New Zealand at the historic Eden Park on July 18. Head coach Townsend, who named Rory Darge as captain with George Turner returning to the fold after missing the last year of international rugby following his move to Kobelco Kobe Steelers in Japan, said: 'We know that playing Test matches for Scotland and winning Test matches for Scotland is really important, so we have to pick a strong squad to take on the likes of Fiji and Samoa. 'It's an even more important issue with the world-ranking points. The World Cup draw gets made after November, so these games are crucial to make sure we've got the best chance of being in that top six and getting a better seeding. 'There's always, maybe one or two players that we decided not to select not because of form, but because we think it's not right for them to go into tour at this time. 'But other than that, it's as strong as a squad as we could select, and the benefit of having that third game of the game against Maori All Blacks will mean that we will everybody in tour will get game time, and players that maybe haven't played as much for us in the past are going to get game time on the tour and game time for Scotland.' Head Coach Gregor Townsend discusses his selections for the @Skyscanner Pacific Tour. Watch the video here ➡️ — Scottish Rugby (@Scotlandteam) June 10, 2025 There are three uncapped players named by head coach Gregor Townsend – stand-off Fergus Burke, back-row Alexander Masibaka and tighthead prop Fin Richardson – although all three have been involved with the squad before. In the back row, Matt Fagerson has been included despite missing the end of season with Glasgow through injury but there is no place for Jack Dempsey, who had been sidelined since the Six Nations win over Wales in March. Forwards Andy Onyeama-Christie and Max Williamson are back in after injury. Townsend said he was pleased to be able to recall Turner, who has signed for Harlequins for next season. He said: 'I think when George went to Japan, we never knew whether that would be extended and he was there until the end of his career, which would make it very difficult for him to be considered for us, given the Japan season is played during the Six Nations. George Turner is back in the Scotland squad (Brian Lawless/PA) 'So it was very good news that he got a club back in the UK and he was really keen to be back involved with us.' Townsend believes some of the Scotland players who narrowly missed out on selection for the British and Irish Lions squad for the tour of Australia may yet get their chance. He said: 'I don't want to say we hope that to happen because that means someone's been injured on the tour, but if someone does get injured, then we would like to feel that our players in a strong position. Some would have been very close to selection anyway. 'If they're playing in New Zealand or in Fiji and playing well, then that gives them an even bigger opportunity to potentially join the Lions tour. 'We've seen the weekend, unfortunately for us was Zander (Fagerson) being injured, but there will be injuries on the way to Australia and during the tour in Australia. Rory Darge has been named Scotland captain for the summer tour (Andrew Milligan/PA) 'But the good thing for our players and those that maybe were closer to selection is they were so keen to come out and tour. They've had long seasons, but some of these players are in great form. I look at the weekend and seeing lots of Rory Darge and Tom Jordan still playing some of their best rugby at this time of the season. 'So that's great for us as we go to tour, but it should be also good for chances of getting on the Lions tour.' Scotland Under-20 men's assistant coach Fergus Pringle has been appointed as forwards coach for the tour, deputising for John Dalziel, who will be with the Lions.

The 45-times capped hooker has not played for the national side since leaving Glasgow Warriors to move to Japan to play for Kobelco Kobe Steelers at the end of the 2023-24 season. He was unavailable for Scotland duties due to the Japan Rugby League One schedule clashing with the Six Nations but has now agreed a deal to join Harlequins for next season. Burke, the Saracens 10, and Masibaka, who plays in the French second tier for Soyaux Angoulême, were both involved in Six Nations squads this year but did not get any game-time. George Turner has not played for Scotland since the 2024 Guinness Six Nations. | SNS Group Richardson, meanwhile, has forced his way into the reckoning at Glasgow Warriors. The tighthead prop started Saturday's URC semi-final against Leinster in Dublin and has played nine times for the club since moving from Exeter Chiefs last summer. The squad, which will be captained by Rory Darge, is far less experimental than that which toured the Americas last summer. On that occasion, head coach Gregor Townsend capped 11 new players. Others returning after missing the Six Nations include Kyle Steyn, Adam Hastings, Cameron Redpath, Harry Paterson, Cameron Henderson and Max Williamson. But there is no place for Dave Cherry, Scotland's starting hooker in all five Six Nations games. The national side will leave for the southern hemisphere later this month to play three matches in July. The tour kicks off against the Māori All Blacks in Whangārei on Saturday, July 5. Scotland will then head to Suva to play Fiji on Saturday, July 12 at the HFC Bank Stadium. The tour will finish back in New Zealand where Scotland will take on Samoa at Eden Park in Auckland on Friday, July 18. Townsend has called in Fergus Pringle to his coaching group for the tour. Next Bristol City manager odds: Gerhard Struber new betting favourite for Robins job

Gerhard Struber is the new favourite to be the next manager of Bristol City, who are on the hunt for a new manager after Liam Manning left the club to become the new boss of Norwich City. Manning had taken over at Ashton Gate in November 2023 and guided the Robins into this season's Championship play-offs, finishing sixth in the regular season before a disappointing 6-0 aggregate loss to Sheffield United in the semi-finals. Norwich were willing to pay the Robins a sum to secure Manning's services after their own 13th-placed finish last season, but Bristol fans will be wondering where that leaves them ahead of the 2025/26 season starting in August. The City board will be eager to secure a new manager as soon as possible with pre-season preparations set to get underway later this month, so we've taken a look at the leading contenders on betting sites to take over the mantle at Ashton Gate. Next Bristol City Manager Odds Manager Odds Betting site Gerhard Struber 2/1 BetVictor Rob Edwards 3/1 BetVictor Richie Wellens 4/1 Parimatch Neil Warnock 8/1 BetVictor Dave Challinor 8/1 Betano Michael Carrick 8/1 Parimatch Steve Cooper 16/1 BetVictor Marti Cifuentes 16/1 BetVictor Gary O'Neil 20/1 talkSPORT BET Ruben Selles 20/1 talkSPORT BET Jack Wilshere 20/1 Betano Former Barnsley Boss the New Favourite Former Barnsley boss Struber has emerged as the new favourite to replace Manning at Ashton Gate, three years after leaving Oakwell. The Austrian spent just one season in South Yorkshire after keeping them in the Championship, despite being bottom of the league and seven points from safety when he took over. He left the club in October 2020, when he was named head coach of New York Red Bulls, and has since managed Red Bull Salzburg before most recently managing Cologne. However, he was sacked in May with the team in the automatic promotion places with just two games to go. They eventually got promoted back to the Bundesliga and now betting sites are offering just 2/1 on Struber returning to English football as the new boss of Bristol City. Ex-Premier League Bosses Also in The Race Former Luton Town manager Rob Edwards was previously the joint favourite for the role, with the 42-year-old having been sacked in January after a run of defeats in the Championship. Though the Hatters ended up getting relegated, Edwards' reputation is still solid having guided Luton to an unlikely promotion to the Premier League in 2023 and he's currently a coach in demand with bookmakers making him a strong candidate in the next Middlesbrough manager odds too. Edwards is more favoured than Richie Wellens, who is now 3/1 on football betting sites to take the Bristol job. Wellens took Leyton Orient to the League 1 play-off final last season, though the defeat to Charlton coupled with the loss of several key players could prompt him to leave Brisbane Road. Neil Warnock has made a surprise appearance in the list, popping up at 8/1 to return to management for the first time since leaving Aberdeen in March 2024. The fact he lives down in Cornwall might make the job an attractive one if he is to enjoy one last hurrah. The Englishman is among four former Premier League managers who are supposedly in the running, with ex-Wolves manager Gary O'Neil at 20/1 and former Leicester and Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper offered at 16/1. Lower League Managers Ready to Step up? Several managers from teams and divisions below Bristol City are in the running for the Ashton Gate hotseat, led by Wellens. Former Notts County and Swansea City boss Luke Williams has been touted at 8/1, though his name has appeared infrequently in local press and he has been out of work since leaving the Swans in February. Stockport manager Dave Challinor is another 8/1 candidate as it stands, with the 49-year-old leading his side to the League One play-offs last season, having taken them from non-league football in three seasons. Within the Championship, John Mousinho is another name that has popped up, with the 39-year-old Englishman offered at 16/1 on some betting apps having attracted interest after managing to keep Portsmouth in the division after their promotion the season beforehand. Outside bets It is seen as unlikely that either O'Neil or Cooper will join the Robins, with the latter having expressed an interest in working abroad and O'Neil out of work since leaving Wolves in December. Marti Cifuentes and Ruben Selles are the two bosses with Championship experience who are seen as outside shouts for the job, with the former priced at 16/1 and Selles at 20/1. Cifuentes is currently on gardening leave after guiding QPR to 15th last season, and while he was supposedly on the shortlist to take over as West Brom manager, former Spurs midfielder Ryan Mason has now taken over at the Hawthorns. As for Selles, he presumably did not instil much confidence in prospective suitors when he was sacked by Hull having almost fallen to relegation. That leaves one other candidate at 20/1 – former Norwich caretaker boss Jack Wilshere. The ex-England and Arsenal midfielder took charge of the Canaries for the final matches of the season but left the club after being informed that he wasn't being considered for the full-time job, and despite plenty of time as an assistant, it may be seen as too much of a jump to give someone so inexperienced a top role at this stage in his career.
