Indore Metro begins commercial operation
Indore Metro commenced commercial operations on Sunday, marking a transformative step in the city's urban transportation landscape.
While the initial hours saw a relatively low passenger turnout, riders steadily increased by noon, Metro officials reported and said despite the introduction of fares, public enthusiasm remained strong, with expectations of further growth in commuter numbers by evening.
Currently, Indore Metro lacks an automated ticketing system, requiring manual compilation of ticket sales and passenger data.
Authorities are working toward implementing a streamlined digital system, but for now, ticketing operations continue to be handled manually.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the first phase of the Indore Metro project on May 31, 2025, via video link from Bhopal.
The launch coincided with the 300th birth anniversary celebrations of Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar – the revered ruler of Malwa, where the Prime Minister addressed the 'Women Empowerment Mega Conference".
During his speech, PM Modi highlighted Indore's global reputation for cleanliness and expressed confidence that the city would now also be recognized for its metro connectivity.
The metro's initial operational plan included 50 trips per day, metro authorities said. However, due to the overwhelming response to free travel during the launch phase, the number of daily trips exceeded 100.
Starting Monday, the metro service will revert to its original schedule of 50 trips per day.
The fare structure has been set at concessional rates, with passengers paying a minimum of five rupees for short distances and eight rupees for a seven-kilometer journey.
Promotional discounts will be in effect for the first three months, with fares gradually increasing to standard rates. Officials are now focusing on the upcoming 17-km trial run, which will extend the metro service from Gandhi Nagar to Radisson Hotel Square.
This expansion is expected to significantly boost regular ridership, particularly among employees and students from major institutions such as TCS and Infosys, whose campuses are located along the route.
Currently, the Metro operates within a seven-km stretch, primarily covering commercial zones. However, as the network expands, its impact on urban mobility and connectivity will become more pronounced, offering residents a modern and efficient transit system.
The broader metro network, once fully operational, is expected to cover 31.32 km with 28 stations, further enhancing Indore's public transportation infrastructure.

PM package announced in 2015 starts gaining momentum
Patna: Bihar gained new momentum in the transportation sector from the special financial package announced by PM Narendra Modi for the state in 2015. A recent review of the projects being implemented under the special package, by state's chief secretary Amrit Lal Meena revealed that a network of 1,304 km of new roads was constructed and 44 out of 74 major road projects were completed so far. Moreover, five major rail projects of the special package were also completed. In the civil aviation sector, the Jayaprakash Narayan International (JPNI) airport in Patna, emerged in its new 'avatar' while development of others airport is in pipelines. Addressing a public rally in August 2015, the PM Modi had announced a mega package of Rs 1.25 lakh crore for the state. The largest portion of the package was related to the ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH), under which 74 projects were announced to lay a network of roads spanning 2,836KM. The total cost of this was Rs 51,540 crore. "Work on 44 road projects has been completed, resulting in 1,304KM of new roads in the state at a cost of Rs 14,898 crore," a senior official associated with the road projects told TOI on Sunday. Some major road projects which were completed under the PM package are the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the Mahatma Gandhi Setu at a cost of Rs 1,742 crore, the construction of the Patna-Gaya-Dobhi road for Rs 1,680 crore, the construction of a 4-lane road from Simaria to Khagaria for Rs 1,063 crore, the 4-lane road from Koilwar to Bhojpur for Rs 750 crore, and the construction of the 4-lane Bhojpur-Buxar for Rs 595 crore. The second major component of the Bihar package includes nine railway projects, of which work on five has already been completed and four are nearing completion. So far, 652km of railway lines have been constructed or doubled at a cost of Rs 4,841 crore. "Work is ongoing on four projects covering 466 km, with an expenditure of Rs 7,736 crore. Key railway projects expected to be completed by the end of this year include the doubling of the Kiul-Gaya line, doubling between Samastipur-Darbhanga, the third line between Dhanbad-Sonnagar, and the doubling of the Rampur Dumra Tal line along with the construction of the Rajendra Bridge," an official associated with the rail projects said. Under the package, necessary approvals were granted for the development of airports in four cities to provide better connectivity by linking new cities, other than the state capital Patna, through air routes. The renovation of the JPNI, Patna, was also part of the package. The package includes the construction or renovation of airports at Bihta, Gaya, Raxaul and Purnia. "The renovation of the JPNI was recently completed at a cost of Rs 1,216 crore, with new buildings and terminals constructed. Similarly, Rs 68.72 crore was spent to develop Gaya airport. Meanwhile, construction work is about to begin at Bihta and Purnia. The construction of Purnia Airport is expected to start soon. Land survey work is underway in Raxaul, after which construction will begin there as well," an official said.

Metro project will be built underground: Minister
1 2 Bhubaneswar: Works minister Prithiviraj Harichandan on Sunday announced major infrastructural developments in capital city, including plans for a mega Odisha Mandapam, a 10,000-seater convention centre, and a significant modification to the Metro rail project, which will now be constructed underground instead of the previously planned elevated route. Speaking on the sidelines of a national seminar on 'Recent Advances in Iconic Building Projects', jointly organised by the public works department and the Indian Building Congress (IBC), the minister also announced plans to build disaster-resilient buildings across the state. "The site for the mega convention centre has been identified in Chandrasekharpur, with the initial feasibility study already completed," Harichandan said. Regarding the Metro project modification, he added, "An elevated Metro is not feasible for Bhubaneswar, which prompted us to reconsider its design and opt for an underground concept similar to other Indian cities." The national seminar brought together experts and policymakers from across India to discuss sustainable construction practices. Bijay Chandra Tripathy, chairman of the Odisha chapter of IBC, said that the seminar's outcomes would be submitted to the govt for consideration, adding that they would 'collaborate with the state govt in achieving sustainable construction practices'. Marking a significant milestone, the seminar is the first national-level IBC event in Bhubaneswar in two decades. Manoranjan Mishra, former engineer in-chief of the works department and IBC council member, emphasised that the event explored innovative solutions for future infrastructure development. P K Parhi, vice-chairman of IBC's Odisha chapter, noted the overwhelming response from various sectors, including govt bodies, planning authorities, and academic institutions. "After so long, the city has witnessed the national seminar of IBC. It will be important since Bhubaneswar is currently making strides in infrastructure development," he said.

Odisha CM Majhi meets industry leaders, entrepreneurs ahead of 1st anniversary of BJP govt
Bhubaneswar (Odisha) [India], June 8 (ANI): Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi met several prominent industry leaders, MSME entrepreneurs, women entrepreneurs and start-up sector leaders on Sunday, ahead of the first anniversary of his government. During the interaction, the CM thanked the entrepreneurs and industry leaders for becoming part of Odisha's growth story. He highlighted how Odisha is becoming a fulcrum of industrialization and the measures Odisha government has taken to help industries in catering to the international markets. Asserting that the government is focusing more on job creation and more employment, he urged the industry captains and entrepreneurs to grow with Odisha and join the journey of making Odisha an industrial power house. Speaking to the industry barons, CM said, 'One year ago, the people of Odisha, placed their faith in us, to build a future, that is inclusive, aspirational, and transformative. Today, as we reflect on this first year, we do so with pride, in our progress and renewed commitment to the journey ahead.' On the investment summit Utkarsha Odisha, he said Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call to investors to put their money in Odisha was highly rewarding for us. Over 150 MoUs were signed, generating Rs 16.7 lakh crore of investment intent and an employment potential for more than 12.9 lakh people. Over the last year alone, 206 large projects were approved, nearly double the average of the previous five years. 'These represent, a total investment value of over Rs 4.5 lakh Crore and an employment potential of nearly 2.9 lakh jobs,' the CM said. He further said, 'Since Utkarsha Odisha, 56 projects have already been taken up for ground-breaking and inauguration, with a combined investment of over Rs 1.78 lakh Crore, and employment potential for 1.1 lakh people. These numbers reflect not only our speed, but scale and substance.' Adding that this growth has been spread across 20 diverse sectors from traditional strengths like mining, metallurgy and metal downstream to emerging opportunities in chemicals, food processing, apparel and textiles, renewable energy equipment, electronics, and tourism, he asserted that Odisha is no longer just the minerals and metals hub of India, it is fast becoming a diversified industrial powerhouse. In many ways, he continued, that his government has done more in this one year, than the past five years put together--through quiet, focused, and committed action. Looking ahead to the next year, he said the government will focus on four key priorities. 'First, we will bring new policies that unlock emerging sectors, and offer global competitiveness. Second, we will expand our land bank and industrial infrastructure, to meet future demand. Third, we will revamp our single window system, and develop a modern, integrated project tracking platform. Fourth, we will work to deregulate and simplify burdensome rules and processes. These steps will ensure faster approvals, seamless coordination, and real-time progress monitoring,' the CM added. He further said that the next four years will lay the foundation for a prosperous Odisha. 'We will build on our leadership in mining, metals, and green chemicals with strong support from partners like IOCL, JSW, JSPL, Tata Steel, AMNS, Vedanta, Hindalco, and Adani. We are also strengthening, port-based industrialization, through new terminals, jetties, and container handling capacity, across the Paradip-Dhamra-Gopalpur stretch,' he added. On this occasion, Minister, MSME and Fisheries and ARD Gokula Nanda Mallik, Minister, Industries and Skill Development and Technical Education Sampad Chandra Swain , Development Commissioner cum Additional Chief Secretary Anu Garg, were present.
