
Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation's ESL drive transforms English learning in civic schools; empowers teachers
Pune (Maharashtra) [India], June 28 (ANI): In a remarkable transformation across Pimpri Chinchwad's civic schools, the fear of English is being steadily replaced by confidence, curiosity, and joy, said a Senior official of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation.
English as a Second Language (ESL) initiative, launched in 2022, initially targeted students in Grades 1 and 2 and has since reached over 27,000 children across municipal schools. The initiative, rooted in teacher empowerment and classroom-centric solutions, is now being hailed as a model for public education reform.
'When I first received the English practice book, I could see the change almost immediately,' said Sharmistha Babar, teacher at Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Primary School, Dighi Kanya Shala.
'Reading skills and vocabulary have improved, and the activity-based training has made teaching more enjoyable and less stressful', she added further.
The ESL programme began with monthly training workshops for 200 Lower Primary Teachers, focusing on foundational skills such as phonics, classroom communication, and creating print-rich environments. One of the key innovations has been the co-creation of a 300-page English Practice Book by a team of 10 civic school teachers. Divided into three levels, from alphabet recognition to paragraph reading, the book serves both as a learning tool and an assessment guide.
Sagar Gaikwad, a teacher from Kanya School No. 31, Dapodi, said, 'The fear of English has reduced, not only among students but among teachers too. The practice book has laid strong reading foundations, and we've seen those gains in our annual assessments.'
Commissioner Shekhar Singh emphasised the importance of trusting teachers and equipping them with tools and training. 'This initiative is rooted in a simple idea: trust your teachers. When empowered, they become true change-makers. The ESL programme has not only improved English learning but also helped restore faith in public schooling.'
To sustain and expand the programme, PCMC has developed a cadre of Master Trainers, experienced teachers who now lead peer training, resource creation, and mentoring. This teacher-led model has helped embed quality practices across the school system.
'We didn't just bring in a new curriculum, we built a community of teacher-leaders,' said Additional Commissioner Pradip Jambhale Patil. 'This sense of ownership among educators is what makes the initiative sustainable. It's become a movement,' he added.
Building on its early success, PCMC has now expanded the ESL programme to Grades 3, 4, and 5, with new practice books and training modules co-developed by over 20 contributors, including teachers, Teach For India fellows, civic officials, and students.
The ESL approach is also influencing teaching practices in other subjects, such as Marathi and Environmental Science, where educators are now using group work, storytelling, and inquiry-based learning methods. (ANI)

School Education Minister holds review meeting on National Achievement Survey with school heads in Tiruppur
School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi convened a meeting of school heads in Tiruppur on Saturday to determine readiness of schools in backward areas to prepare students for the National Achievement Survey (NAS). The Minister sought suggestions from the heads of government, government-aided and private unaided schools, to improve learning levels of students in third, fifth and eight grades. Though the NAS does not provide scores for individual student/school, it is a national representative survey that provides a system-level reflection on effectiveness of school education, according to the organisers of the review meeting. The NAS is the basis for educational planners and policy makers including researchers in understanding the interdependence of assessment, pedagogical process and learning outcomes. The tests are conducted in language, mathematics and environmental studies for class 3 and 5; language, mathematics, science and social science for class 8; and modern Indian language, mathematics, science, social science and English for class 10. Mr. Poyyamozhi called upon parents to monitor smart phone usage and ensure that their wards are not distracted. District Collector Manish S Narnaware, Commissioner of Tiruppur City Corporation M.P. Amit and officials of School Education department took part.

Puri (Odisha) [India], June 28 (ANI): As people participate in the second day of Jagannath Rath yatra today, on June 28, Reliance Foundation has set up stalls under its 'We Care' initiative to serve meals to devotees and police personnel. Meals will be served during the Shree Jagannath Rath Yatra in Puri. Today is the second day of the grand Jagannath Rath Yatra. As part of the tradition, the chariots of Lord Jagannath and his siblings are being pulled towards the Gundicha Temple, where the deities will rest for nine days before returning to the Jagannath Temple. Devotees from across India and around the world are arriving in Puri to take part in the Yatra and seek blessings. A devotee from West Africa who came to Puri for the first time said, 'This is my very first opportunity to witness the Rath Yatra in Puri. Yesterday, we only got the opportunity to have darshan of Lord Jagannath. But today, hopefully Jagannath will be kind, we will be able to pull his chariot as today is the second day.' She added that she was grateful for the opportunity to experience the celebration. Gaurangi Devika Das, a foreign devotee living in India for the past 20 years, expressed her joy, saying, 'Yesterday was the first day of the Rath Yatra festival. Lakhs of people are coming. By the mercy of Lord Jagannath, I got to take his darshan. Today, I hope I will have the grace to pull Jagannath to Gundicha. Swami Shri Sukh Darshan Das from Shree Swaminarayan Mandir, Vadtal, also joined the celebrations. He said, 'We are from Gujarat. Today is a big celebration of the Rath Yatra. God has come to give darshan to everyone. So we also had darshan this morning. Rath Yatra is so important that whichever devotee has darshan of the Lord in this Rath Yatra, the Lord will fulfil all their wishes. This is the best moment of my life. Lord Jagannath is the Lord of the whole universe.' Shri Jagannath Temple Administration Chief Administrator Arabinda K Padhee informed on Friday, 'On 28th June, the chariot pulling will begin at 9.30 am. So it is all Mahaprabhu's desire.' The Jagannath Rath Yatra, also called the Chariot Festival or Shree Gundicha Yatra, is a significant event for Hindus.
