Ennis Rakestraw injures chest in Lions practice

NBC Sports20-07-2025
The Lions held their first practice of training camp on Sunday and they also experienced their first injury of the summer.
Per multiple reports, cornerback Ennis Rakestraw had to leave the field early in the session. The team said that he is being evaluated for a chest injury.
Rakestraw was a second-round pick last season, but was limited to eight regular season appearances because of a hamstring injury. He had six tackles in those appearances.
Sunday opened with word that defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike will miss the year with a torn ACL. The Lions will be hoping for better news about Rakestraw's outlook.

Former Pro Bowl safety Jamal Adams is switching positions with Raiders

Safety seems like it's been a busy position for the Raiders this offseason. They gave Isaiah Pola-Mao a long term extension and their only free agent addition to sign more than a one-year deal was safety Jaremy Chinn, seemingly giving them two new starters to replace the losses of Tre'von Moehrig and Marcus Epps. Then the same day they added Chinn, they also signed Lonnie Johnson Jr. So, they seemed set. And yet just prior to the first day of camp they also added safety TJ Scott and former Pro Bowl safety Jamal Adams. Now, suddenly they were looking at a logjam at safety. But when Adams took the field, he was working with the linebackers instead. The 6-1, 213-pounder is trying to make a comeback after splitting last season between the Titans and the Lions' practice squad. And his former Seahawks head coach sees a change of positions is the best way to accomplish that. "I told him right off the bat, I want him to play inside," Carroll said of Adams. "He's always been so instinctive and so aggressive and such a run-through guy, been a fantastic blitzer over his time. So, I want to put him in position to do that. So, he's jumped right into the WILL spot, and that gives us some flexibility that we're going to grow with. He looks really good. He had a real serious injury a bit ago. He looks like he's back. Weighing a little bit more than he was before, he fit just right. I'm really anxious to see how he takes it." Linebacker has also been completely overhauled this offseason for the Raiders. Former starters Robert Spillane and Divine Deablo were allowed to leave in free agency. They then seemingly replaced them with former Steelers MLB Elandon Roberts and former Bucs OLB Devin White. Now both Roberts and White have some competition with the additions of Adams and former Bengals LB Germaine Pratt. Carroll has preached competition. He wasn't lying.

Is Cowboys' youthful 5th-round pick capable of immediate impact, or hopeful investment?

What inspired the Cowboys to trade up for Shemar James in the 2025 NFL draft? The team had used both draft and financial capital to bring in Kenneth Murray (via trade) and Jack Sanborn, and had spent two third-round picks in two years on DeMarvion Overshown and Marist Liufau. While Overshown is expected to miss at least two months of the season after an ACL injury, the team wasn't in a dire situation at the position; they've entered seasons with more disarray before. But the new regime in town after changing out the majority of the coaching staff, wanted to bring in a prospect that met their protoype, and moved up in the fifth round to select James out of Florida. Dallas had already selected RB Jaydon Blue early in the round, but then bundled the No. 174 and No. 211 pick together, swapping spots with the Arizona Cardinals. Rundown Position: Linebacker Age: 21 Height: 6-foot-1 Weight: 222 pounds Hometown: Mobile, AL High School: Faith Academy College: Florida (Highlights) Draft: 2025 Fifth Round (No. 152 overall) Acquired: 2025 draft Contract: Four-year contract (2025), $4.6 million 2025 Base Salary: $840,000 Profile James' draft pedigree will put him on the 53-man roster, but his place in the pecking order will be determined by what happens in the remaining weeks of training camp. He'll be fighting for snaps with Damone Clark, who is now on his third defensive coordinator in three years in Matt Eberflus. Also looking to secure a role is UDFA rookie Justin Barron, a safety convert similar to Overshown. Buddy Johnson and Darius Harris are also on the 90-man roster hoping to earn a place in the regular season picture. James' physical profile is similar, a speedy, smooth athlete who looks to avoid second-level blockers instead of taking them on. He's ridiculously young, indicating an untapped ceiling the Cowboys hope to develop. The NFL is now a three-year window league, so the hope is that after the short-term rentals of Murray and Sanborn, James emerges to form a triumvirate with Liufau and Overshown. Lions standout Alex Anzalone named Top-10 linebacker by former NFL LB

The Lions undoubtedly feel very good about their trio of linebackers in Alex Anzalone, Jack Campbell and Derrick Barnes. They certainly feel excellent about the first name on that list. Anzalone has become a key leader of not only the defense, but the entire team, being a key component of the Lions turnaround into a Super Bowl contender. Anzalone has also been getting love from the media as one of the better linebackers in the league. A recent example comes from former NFL linebacker and current contributor to Good Morning Football, Manti Te'o. The former Chargers, Saints and Bears linebacker recently named his top ten linebackers in the NFL and Anzalone came in at No. 6 on the list. Before Anzalone's forearm injury, he had 63 tackles in ten games. In four seasons with the Lions, Anzalone has racked up 123 tackles, four sacks and three fumble recoveries. The five linebackers Te'o placed above Anzalone were Bobby Wagner (Commanders), Fred Warner (49ers), Dre Greenlaw (Broncos), Lavonte David (Buccaneers) and Roquan Smith (Ravens). Rounding out his top ten were Zack Baun (Eagles), Nick Bolton (Chiefs), Denzel Perryman (Chargers) and Frankie Luvu (Commanders).
