Makhachev ‘Definitely Gonna Run' From Buckley
Islam Makhachev always wanted to compete at 170 pounds.
That's why the former lightweight champion is giving up his 155-pound title to challenge Jack Della Maddalena for the welterweight strap. But Makhachev may have a change of heart when he realizes his first title defense will come against knockout artist Joaquin Buckley.

Assuming 'New Mansa' gets past Kamaru Usman in the UFC Atlanta main event.
'So once I beat Kamaru Usman, there is no debate, there is no back-and-forth, there is no argument — we up next,' Buckley said on YouTube. 'You got this guy from 155 coming up thinking he gonna take my spot. We can't have it. The JDM fight and Islam fight is not a massive fight to make. I truly believe that Islam gotta sit back and just wait for me to get my title because I will be the hardest fight that Islam has. He's not gonna out-wrestle me. He's not gonna submit me. I never been submitted in my career — and he's definitely not gonna stand on the feet with me.'
I doubt anyone wants to stand with Buckley after watching this.
'If the people wanna see it, it's gonna be made,' Buckley continued. 'If Islam does get blessed with that title shot, and he does beat JDM, he's not gonna stay there. He's gonna retire. He's gonna get up outta there because he knows he's not a natural 170 fighter. And especially with myself, he's definitely gonna run from a person like me.'

UFC has yet to make Makhachev vs. Della Maddalena official.
The 31 year-old Buckley (21-6) has won six straight with four knockouts and currently sits at No. 7 in the official welterweight rankings. Other aspiring contenders include the No. 6-ranked Ian Garry, as well as the No. 2-ranked Sean Brady. But the next 170-pound title shot may depend on the return of this surgically-repaired 'Nomad.'
As for Buckley, he's not going anywhere if the injected Usman has anything to say about it.

Kayla Harrison shrugs off Demetrious Johnson's negative outlook on Amanda Nunes fight
Kayla Harrison shrugs off Demetrious Johnson's negative outlook on Amanda Nunes fight Demetrious Johnson's call for Kayla Harrison to retire left the UFC women's bantamweight champion a little confused. Harrison (19-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) claimed the 135-pound title by submitting Julianna Peña in this past Saturday's UFC 316 co-main event. The two-time PFL champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist judoka immediately welcomed Amanda Nunes (23-5 MMA, 16-2 UFC) into the octagon for a faceoff, setting up her next fight. Johnson said Harrison fighting Nunes is a very bad idea and suggested that she retire. The comments came as a surprise considering that Harrison will have an opportunity to add the consensus greatest female fighter of all time to her resume, and has just recently started her UFC career. Harrison made it clear that she completely disagrees with Johnson. "I mean, everyone's entitled to their opinion," Harrison told MMA Junkie. "He gets paid to give his opinions, so fair play to him. I live my life out loud, and so there's a lot of room for people to have their own thoughts and speculate or comment on my life and my choices. "But I think that it's important for people to know that I do believe in myself, and I think it's important for people to know that it's OK to believe in yourself. Like, how dare you tell me to think less of me? I'm the greatest, and I'm going to prove it." Oddsmakers at least don't support Johnson's idea that Harrison fighting Nunes is a bad idea. Harrison has opened up as a slight favorite over former UFC dual champion Nunes, who will be coming out of retirement after hanging up her gloves in June 2023. "I've never met the guy," Harrison said of Johnson. "I'm a huge fan of him. I have been for a long time. I've always considered him – I mean, he was my GOAT for a long time. So, whatever. It's none of my business what people think of me."

Court McGee aims to put pressure, finish fellow 'TUF' winner Michael Chiesa at UFC Atlanta
ATLANTA – Court McGee is confident he can play spoiler at UFC on ESPN 69. McGee (22-13 MMA, 11-12 UFC) is a big underdog heading into Saturday's prelim welterweight matchup (ESPN, ESPN+) against Michael Chiesa (18-7 MMA, 13-7 UFC) at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. Advertisement In a battle of "Ultimate Fighter" winners, McGee thinks facing a fellow submission specialist makes for a fun stylistic affair. "I'm excited for the matchup," McGee told MMA Junkie and other reporters during Wednesday's media day. "I think it's a great matchup with Chiesa being an 'Ultimate Fighter' winner, I think it's cool being a heavy grappler. I think it makes for a really good matchup." McGee is coming off a first-round neck crank of Tim Means at UFC 307. All 12 of Chiesa's finishes have come by submission, but McGee has never been submitted. "Like every other fight, I come out and find a way to win," McGee said. "So, I'm going to put the pressure on him right off the bat, come out fast. It should be a great fight, and where he's heavy grappling – that's the other thing. I've grappled for years and years, and I'm going to be looking for a finish. I think I can do it, so we'll see."
