Equestrian sector needs to up safeguarding after Katie Simpson murder, says ex-PSNI officer

Ms Simpson was killed by Jonathan Creswell in August 2020
Northern Ireland's equestrian sector needs to improve its safeguarding arrangements following the murder of Katie Simpson, a former PSNI detective has said.
The 21-year-old was killed in August 2020 by Jonathan Creswell, a horse trainer and showjumper who was in a relationship with Simpson's sister.
Creswell had called the emergency services after assaulting Ms Simpson, claiming to have found her hanging from a stairwell. Simpson died six days later.
Police initially treated her death as suicide, only upgrading the incident to a murder investigation following the intervention of detective James Brannigan.
Creswell was charged with her murder but died at his home a day after his trial commenced in April last year.
Mr Brannigan, who led the investigation into Ms Simpson's killing, said the sector needs to take a look at how it safeguards young people.
"If you take your child to soccer, rugby, Gaelic, swimming, there are safeguarding measures,' he told the Sunday Times this weekend.
'In the equestrian sector, there are none. Predators know that these kids, especially girls, will do anything to stay with horses.
'Creswell was a paedophile. He started relationships with schoolgirls. When he came out of prison after the assault on Abigail Lyle, and it was a brutal assault, the local hunt had a 'welcome home' party for him in Armagh.
"The cases going through the public prosecution service here of incidences taking place in the equine industry is shocking. The equine industry is riddled with this.'
Ms Simpson's story is the subject of a three-part series, Death of a Showjumper, coming soon to Sky and Now TV.
It features Mr Brannigan and Co Armagh journalist Tanya Fowles who, after Simpson's hospitalisation, alerted police that Creswell had been sentenced to six months in prison in 2010 for violently assaulting his former partner.
When the journalist's calls to PSNI in Derry were ignored, she informed Mr Brannigan, who had previously led an investigation into Charlotte Murray (34), who disappeared in 2012 and whose remains have never been found.
Ms Murray's former fiancé, Johnny Miller, was later found guilty of her murder.
Mr Brannigan's team only became the lead investigators on the case five months after Ms Simpson's killing.
"I had to do it myself behind the scenes because I knew there was animosity towards me doing it,' he said.
"Simpson was dead in a car, covered in bruises, and the guy [Creswell] driving the car said, 'She's hung herself.' This guy had a brutal history of domestic violence.
"What stood out to me was the fact that people were going to the police with information. Intelligence was coming in that should have made any police officer sit up.'
The PSNI's initial alleged missteps when investigating Simpson's death included a failure to factor in an incident in which Creswell exposed himself to a female in a stable yard in 2016 and then fled across the border.

An independent review into Creswell's case is under way and is being conducted by Jan Melia, a former Chief Executive of Women's Aid Federation.
"The equine industry is an area of concern and has been included in the review,' she said.
The Police Ombudsman is dealing with a number of complaints over the case, including one from Ms Fowles over the PSNI's failure to respond to her concerns over Creswell.
The PSNI has said the Ombudsman had notified seven officers that they were under investigation following complaints about the handling of the case.
Four of those officers have since retired.

Former BBC and Sky freelance presenter admits domestic abuse against his ex-girlfriend

A sports presenter has pleaded guilty to carrying out a brutal campaign of domestic abuse against a former partner. Bobby Nwanze, 36, acted aggressively towards the victim and made abusive and derogatory remarks towards her while they were a couple over a four-year period. The online podcaster, who has worked as a freelance sports reporter with BBC Scotland and Sky, also accused the woman of cheating on him, threatened to damage her car and monitored her movements. Nwanze, from Edinburgh, also engaged in controlling financial behaviour and on one occasion seized his partner's arm and pulled her towards him in March 2023. He pleaded guilty to a heavily amended charge under the Domestic Abuse (Scotland) Act 2018 when he appeared under the name Charles Nwanze at the capital's sheriff court on Wednesday. Court papers state Nwanze committed the offences on various occasions at his home, Newcraighall primary school and at North High Street in Musselburgh, East Lothian, between April 2019 and March 2023. Fiscal depute Emma Tod told the court the Crown will prepare a written narrative into the course of domestic offending and all the details will be read out at the sentencing hearing. Sheriff Peter Anderson agreed to the motion and deferred sentence on Nwanze for the preparation a criminal justice social work report to next month. Nwanze pleaded guilty to a heavily amended charge under the Domestic Abuse (Scotland) Act 2018 when he appeared under the name Charles Nwanze at Edinburgh Sheriff Court Nwanze's bail was continued as Sheriff Anderson reminded him of the special condition not to approach or contact the victim in any way until the next hearing. According to his online profile, Nwanze was a professional footballer who played with Clyde U19s and was employed as part of the media team with Stenhousemuir FC. He was born in Nigeria and claims he moved to Scotland after being scouted by Rangers FC in 1998. He went on to play for Scotland at youth level. Nwanze was more recently employed by the City of Edinburgh Council as a property assistant and administrator and is currently studying for a degree in Construction and the Built Environment at Edinburgh Napier University. The content creator also has a prominent online presence and has interviewed former Scottish international footballers Derek Ferguson, Kevin Thomson and Garry O'Connor on his YouTube channel.

Drag artist at library event says she is victim of ‘false accusations online'

Lady Portia Di'Monte said the event at Holywood Arches Library on Friday had included a reading from The Chronicles of Narnia and Dear Zoo. The event, which featured two drag artists, was part of the Eastside Arts Festival. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) confirmed it had attended a report of a small demonstration at the library on Friday afternoon and engaged with those present. Stormont's Communities Minister Gordon Lyons said earlier this week the event was not appropriate for children and should not have taken place. Lady Portia Di'Monte said the event had become the subject of 'targeted misinformation and online abuse'. In a statement released by Phoenix Law, she added: 'This joyful, ticketed event was held in a public library with full support from staff, parents, and festival organisers. 'It included readings of The Chronicles of Narnia, Dear Zoo, and stories celebrating diverse families. 'Children also enjoyed inclusive games, music, and a British sign language session – promoting communication and belonging for all. 'Despite its warm and educational focus, the event was disrupted by protesters whose actions created fear and discouraged some families from attending. 'The PSNI were present to maintain safety due to external threats – not because of any risk inside.' She added: 'Since the event, I have been subjected to abuse and false accusations online.' The drag artist said she is now seeking legal advice. She added: 'When children see diversity reflected around them – whether it's queer people, deaf individuals, blended families, or those who feel different – it builds empathy, understanding, and resilience. 'These events are about joy, education, and creating spaces where every child can feel seen and valued. 'To the families, staff, and supporters, thank you. 'To those spreading hate – I will not be silenced. I remain committed to creating safe, welcoming spaces for all children to grow up feeling accepted and proud of who they are.' Phoenix Law solicitor Victoria Haddock said her client had been the victim of a 'campaign of online abuse'. A PSNI statement said: 'Two people were escorted from the building to further ensure that there would be no breach of the peace. 'At this stage, no offences were determined to have taken place.' Mr Lyons said the event had compromised the perception of public libraries as a 'welcoming and inclusive space for all as set out in the Libraries NI policy'.
