Inside Thompson Palm Springs: The Hottest New Hotel For Coachella And Stagecoach 202

Forbes07-04-2025

Exterior of the hotel
Festival season is finally here. From Coachella to Stagecoach and every party in between, there will be no better place to go and be seen than Palm Springs. Those who want an upscale, full-service hotel in a great location will definitely be booking a room at the new Thompson Palm Springs. Located on the iconic Palm Canyon Road, it opened in October 2024 and is one of the newest hotels in town. Featuring 168 rooms, the aesthetic combines old-world Palm Springs elements with fresh modern style and comfort. It's a little bit of the best of everything.
Uniquely designed, there is an exclusive, 21-and-over side to the hotel called Upper Stories, which opened in April 2025, along with a general side open to all types of travelers. So, it truly offers something for everyone.
Here's a look inside Palm Springs' most fabulous new hotel.
The hotel at dusk
The exterior of the hotel was designed by SMS Architecture. Daniel Schmidt-Sohr, Marketing Manager at Thompson Palm Springs, tells me it was built to emulate a gateway into Palm Springs' Design District through playful geometry blended with a mid-century-style framework.
'The hotel sits atop a collection of ground-level retail and is then sectioned into clusters of buildings, each housing a number of guest rooms with private balconies and/or enclosed patios allowing for ample natural lighting and outward views of the Palm Springs skyline. Through its unique guest room towers, the open-air pathways are adorned in lush flora with a teasing glimpse of the surrounding mountains and cityscapes—creating a true urban oasis.'
The Pool Area
While the building is entirely new, its style blends in with downtown Palm Springs. It's a welcome addition in a location where the standards for design (especially for new buildings) are notoriously high.
Guest room with a king size bed
The inside of the space was designed by B2 Design Co. featuring a mix of desert influences, light woods, and neutral furniture, it feels stylish and warm.
'B2 Design Co. crafted a layered, playful design story that combines vintage furniture, modern pieces, and handcrafted furnishings from around the world,' Allison Brooks, CEO and Founder at B2, tells me on behalf of the project team.
'The result is an eclectic mix that's inspired by mid-century modern design–a style synonymous with Palm Springs–but interpreted in a fresh, non-literal approach. Thompson Palm Springs is a distinctly modern urban resort, and every aspect of the design vividly brings to life this bespoke destination.'
One of suites
The guest rooms are sleek and masculine. Featuring leather and burlwood accents, these designs have a fresh feeling yet don't entirely stray from Palm Springs' authenticity. Surrounded by the natural beauty and mountains of the city, it feels stylish and luxe.
The lobby
You never get a second chance to make a first impression, which is why so much attention was paid to the design of the lobby.
'A beautiful, curved sculptural concierge desk, subtly placed off the main thoroughfare, invites guests to relax in nearby seating, including a classic ribbon chair positioned under a grand, custom-curated art piece that spans an entire wall,' notes Brooks.
The lobby space flows into other amenities, including the adjacent Hall Napa Valley Tasting Room & Wine Lounge, the ballroom and event areas, and the fitness center.
Hall Tasting Room
'The tasting room is the first for the winery outside of Napa, where guests can explore the rich vintages in a residential-style space that features a storytelling wall highlighting the Hall family's heritage,' says Brooks.
Art at the Lola Rose Lounge
One of the most notable features throughout the property is the art. Palm Springs is known for its art scene, so curating art for the Thompson is unlike choosing paintings and sculptures for the average hotel.
According to Brooks, the art curator, Virginia Shore of Shore Art Advisory, selected and commissioned pieces for the hotel that complement the layered design, color palette, textures, and mood of each space.
'In the design, B2 intentionally sourced guestroom furnishings by California-based Westcoast Hospitality and eclectic vintage furnishings and accessories throughout the hotel from local suppliers to add local flavor and capture the region's rich culture in the overall experience.'
There are also rainbow-colored bands of shimmering glass tiles on the façade of the hotel, titled The Land Is Speaking ... Are You Listening? (2022), which was created by the renowned artist Jeffrey Gibson.
Another notable piece is the wall-mounted sculpture by Gerald Clarke called Continuum Basket: Creation (2023). It was built using recycled aluminum cans that he crushed and arranged into graphic motifs based on traditional Cahuilla basket designs.

Bus drivers continue strike action over pay

Hundreds of bus drivers across the west of Scotland are continuing their strike action over pay. The Unite union said Stagecoach had failed to improve on a 4% "strings attached" offer tabled last November. It said 98% of its members had voted in favour of the industrial action - involving drivers at depots in Ayr, Arran, Ardrossan, and Kilmarnock. Stagecoach has said it wants a "fair and sustainable" pay deal for drivers that preserves the viability of bus services. The industrial action began last month and is planned to continue with six weeks of continuous action between 9 June and 21 July. Pickets were expected all day at the company's Ayr and Kilmarnock bus stations. Stagecoach said its services would be disrupted due to the industrial action. It said it planned to operate a "limited service with the drivers available". "We're working hard to minimise the impact of this disruption, but unfortunately, the limited services we're running will affect customers travelling in and around Ayrshire," it said on its website. "We're very sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and understanding." It said it would share any updates of the impact on its services via its website. Beyoncé fans react to dance captain's absence during London concert: 'Where is Amari?'

Beyoncé fans react to dance captain's absence during London concert: 'Where is Amari?' Beyoncé Knowles-Carter lit up the stage for the second night of her "Cowboy Carter" tour in London, and while fans were thrilled to see Les Twins dancing once again, many pointed out one familiar face was missing. The Grammy-winning singer took the stage June 7 for her Cowboy Carter and the Rodeo Chitlin' Circuit Tour at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. During the electric performance many fans noticed that Amari "Monster" Marshall, dubbed Beyoncé's dance captain, was not among the performers onstage. One fan wrote, "What happened to Amari," and many others cosigned. Marshall began working with Beyoncé during her iconic 2018 Coachella "Beychella" performances. She eventually assumed the role of dance co-captain on the "Renaissance World Tour," where she played a key part in mentoring Beyoncé's then 11-year-old daughter Blue Ivy during her stage debut. Beyoncé publicly praised Marshall for her guidance with the family dubbing her Blue's 'dance stage momma." She also took the stage with Bey during her 2024 Christmas Day NFL halftime show during the Texans-Ravens game. Marshall has continued performing with Beyoncé as dance captain on the "Cowboy Carter" tour, often sharing photos from various tour stops. However, she appeared to be absent from the stage in London, and fans especially noticed during Saturday night's show. It's not yet clear why Marshall didn't appear onstage or if she'll be making a return soon. The concert marked Beyoncé's second of six shows at the stadium. She is set to hit the stage again June 10, 12, 14 and 16, before heading to Paris for three fans know, Beyoncé first debuted her "Cowboy Carter" tour at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on April 28 with 39 songs on the set list. Her shows have been filled with family, fashion, different music genres, and most notably country music and cultural commentary. Of course, Beyoncé first released the 27-track project in March 2024. It has since made history and broken multiple records. As Beyoncé's first country album, she deliberately featured country legends and emerging Black country artists alike. She became the first Black woman to win best country album at the 2025 Grammys and also took home album of the year. The nine-city tour will span the U.S. and Europe with the grand finale taking place in Las Vegas on July 26. Kate Moss launches Festival Collection for Zara

Kate Moss has tapped into her love of music to launch a new Festival Collection for Zara . The supermodel teamed with the high street giant last year to release her first Kate Moss x Zara collection and now she's back with a second range which is themed around music festivals and features Moss in a campaign alongside Primal Scream legend Bobby Gillespie, who is married to the collection's co-designer - stylist Katy England. Moss said: "It was such an evolved process this time. Because it's Spring/Summer and festival season, I suppose, I expected it to be more about wafty dresses. "But it's a bit tougher than that. That's because all the masculine energy was coming in from Bobby doing his collection at the same time. You could feel it coming over and we ended up going somewhere quite unexpected that I didn't think we would." The festival collection includes mini-dresses, a leopard print skirt, a sheer floral maxi-dress, suede ankle boots and a leather-studded bralette as well as accessories including sunglasses, studded belts and bracelets. The festival collection also features menswear pieces. The advertising campaign also features Gillespie's model son, Lux, 21, and Moss' 22-year-old daughter, Lila. The collection launches online and in stores on June 10. Moss spoke about the collection to and insisted she never pre-plans her outfits - especially when it comes to clothes she wears to festivals. She told the outlet: "Planned outfits never work for me. I don't do that ... I just think overly thought-out outfits are a bit … for a festival? "When I look at Coachella I just think … are they even having fun?" Kate previously included a silver dress inspired by an outfit she wore to Glastonbury Festival in 2005 in her last collection for Zara. It comes after Kate admitted she hates fashion "trends" because she can't stand seeing the same "shoe and bag" in every shop. During an appearance on Bella Freud's 'Fashion Neurosis' podcast, she explained: "I hate fashion codes. I hate like: 'Oh this bag's in fashion so everybody designs the same f****** bag.' I hate that kind of thing. Like oh this is fashionable so everybody has to have that in their shop. I really don't like that. "Like I walked through the airport the other day and in every shop was the same shoe and the same bag from like every designer. I was like: 'What the f*** is the point in doing that?' I don't understand ... "They might put it on the runway different but when it gets to the shop it's all the same. Like why? It's not fun when it's fashionable. "You know like the trends. That's what they call them. The trends ... Trends are awful. [As soon as it's a trend] you can't wear it any more."
