‘Trash talk' gets smarter: Solar-powered centre to collect e-waste at Khan Market

New Delhi: To reduce the burden on landfills by strengthening decentralised community-centric initiatives, New Delhi Municipal Council, along with NGO Chintan, has set up a solar-powered micro material recovery facility (MMRF) at Khan Market. The initiative is part of a larger plan to operationalise eight decentralised centres across the NDMC areas, each designed to tackle specific waste streams through collection, segregation, repair, reuse, upcycling and safe disposal, in line with Solid Waste Management Rules 2016. These are basically dhalaos that have been converted into MMRF plus reduce, reuse, recycle centres. This facility will specialise in e-waste collection and their responsible handover for disposal. The site, located close to the parking for public convenience, will facilitate the collection of waste such as old shoes, clothes, paper, books, domestic hazardous waste and, most importantly, various e-waste items. "We had a facility here earlier, but now this is revamped properly. We have placed multiple boxes, specifying the items that can be dropped in each of them. Besides paper and mixed plastic, separate sections are made for dumping batteries, stereos, keyboards or tablets, wires and earphone chargers, considering all these electronic items are processed separately," said an NGO representative. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No dark spots, 10 years younger! Just take this from Guardian URUHIME MOMOKO Learn More Undo "We also have a machine to compress plastic bottles. Collected and segregated waste will be transferred to registered processing units." Launching the facility along with Chintan founder Bharati Chaturvedi, NDMC chairman Keshav Chandra said, "We encourage NDMC waste generators to participate in this project by dropping off their waste or calling for a pickup." Another key feature is a solar panel of 1kW capacity installed at the entrance to run the fan and lights and the weighing machines at the centre. "It will showcase how renewable, green energy can fight heat, improve health and also enable more efficient waste management," said Chaturvedi. NDMC has come across many new waste streams, from textile waste to shoes, said medical officer of health Dr Shakuntala Srivastava. "Trained waste pickers, integrated into the formal waste system, will manage operations, strengthening both environmental sustainability and livelihoods," said an official.

Modi gifts Odisha's artefacts to world leaders during recent tours

1 2 Bhubaneswar: During his recent international tours, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted a curated selection of Odisha's finest traditional art and artefacts, including Pattachitra painting, silver filigree works and miniature replicas of the iconic Konark wheel, to his counterparts and global leaders. People of Odisha, including politicians and artisans, said such recognition can boost global demand, tourism, and economic opportunities for Odisha's artists. During his meeting with Croatian president Zoran Milanović, the Prime Minister presented a traditional Pattachitra painting, known for its intricate depictions of mythological tales, particularly stories from the Jagannath tradition. Chief minister Mohan Majhi expressed his gratitude to the PM for selecting the timeless creations from Odisha as a gift and wrote in an X post: "Time and again, Prime Minister Modi ji has brought global recognition to Odisha's rich cultural and spiritual heritage. This gesture further reaffirms our pride in Odia Asmita and brings the timeless legacy of the Jagannath tradition to the forefront on the world stage. Such international appreciation serves as a profound source of inspiration for our artisan communities and strengthens Odisha's cultural identity globally. " Puri MP Sambit Patra described it as 'a proud moment for Odisha and Puri!' "Pattachitra is a centuries-old cloth-based art from Odisha, known for its detailed mythological stories, especially the divine pastimes of Lord Sri Jagannath. These are carefully painted using only natural mineral and vegetable colours. These scrolls have long been carried by pilgrims returning from darshan in Puri, as a symbol of blessings from the Jagannath temple," Patra wrote in an X post. He further added that Raghurajpur, a heritage village in Puri Lok Sabha, is the heart of this age-old tradition, where skilled 'chitrakars' preserved and passed down Pattachitra for over a thousand years. Under Modiji's leadership, India's cultural strength continues to shine across the world, he wrote. In addition to the Pattachitra painting, PM Narendra Modi gifted chancellor of Germany Friedrich Merz a sandstone replica of the Konark wheel and a silver clutch purse to governor general of Canada Mary Simon during the G7 summit. The labour-intensive crafts are known for their precision and elegance and are a symbol of Odisha's unmatched metallurgical tradition. Odia netizens appreciated PM Modi's gesture of gifting Odisha's timeless crafts. "What a thoughtful way to share India's living tradition with the world," read an X post. Another person wrote, "A tribute to India's storytelling heritage." These diplomatic gifts are more than symbolic gestures as they carry the legacy of generations of artisans, many of whom live in rural and coastal Odisha. "Prime Minister Modiji's gesture of gifting Pattachitra paintings, the stone wheel of Konark, and silver artwork to world leaders not only showcased Odisha's rich cultural heritage but also highlighted the exceptional craftsmanship of its artisans. This gesture will boost international recognition and appreciation for Odisha's art, potentially leading to increased demand and opportunities for local artisans," said Khitish Das, an artist.

Adani can't sub-lease its data centre project to another co until it's complete, says Noida

Noida: Noida Authority has ruled out the possibility of sub-leasing its Sector 80 industrial plot to Noida Data Centre Ltd — a group firm of Adani Enterprises Ltd — before the project is declared functional. The decision marks a reversal of the Authority's earlier stance, with officials insisting they would not allow any relaxation from original allotment conditions. According to officials, the plot allotted to Adani in 2021 was still undeveloped and the company had not applied for map approval either. They cited Clause 14-B of the lease deed, which clarified that sub-leasing would be allowed only after the unit obtained an occupancy certificate and became operational. In July last year, the Authority had initially approved the sub-leasing of 10 acres in Sector 80 to Noida Data Centre Ltd — a special purpose vehicle (SPV) formed jointly by Adani Enterprises and EdgeConneX under the AdaniConnex venture. The land, allotted for Rs 70 crore in April 2021, was meant for developing a 50MW hyperscale data park within six years. However, the Authority reversed its decision at a meeting in March this year, following complications over transfer charges. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like O novo dispositivo que os idosos usam para ajudar na neuropatia (dor nos nervos) A arte do herbalismo Undo When the Authority demanded Rs 11 crore as transfer fee, Adani sought a waiver, citing a precedent where the Authority had allowed sub-leasing of its institutional plot in Sector 62 to another SPV without such charges. The company cited the Data Centre Policy of 2021. But although the policy allowed sub-leasing without transfer charges, it also empowered industrial development authorities to levy relevant fees under the UP Industrial Area Development Act, 1976. On June 9, the Authority denied the waiver and conveyed its decision to Adani through a letter, pointing out that the allottee had agreed to these provisions at the time of application and remained bound by them. Chief secretary Manoj Singh, who is also the Authority chairperson, also intervened. He clarified that the Sector 62 case couldn't be compared with that of Adani as it involved different categories of land use. Sector 80 followed industrial plot norms, while Sector 62 was allotted under institutional rules. "Noida Authority's policies for transfer or sub-lease of industrial and institutional plots are entirely different," Singh wrote to Authority CEO Lokesh M. In his letter, Singh also emphasised that the lease deed for the Sector 80 plot — executed in Oct 2021 — explicitly prohibited any kind of transfers before the project became functional. "The allottee was aware of the provisions.... Now, subsequent to signing the lease deed, the provisions of the Para 8.3.i of the Data Centre Policy 2021 cannot be taken recourse to," he wrote. While the IT and electronics department supported Adani's position — arguing that the Data Centre Policy should supersede the lease deed terms — the Authority stuck to its stance. A committee comprising the finance controller, chief legal adviser, and an additional CEO recommended that Adani's request for sub-lease and fee waiver be rejected, also insisting on project completion and the mandatory occupancy certificate. "Granting any relaxation would amount to a post-allotment benefit, which cannot be allowed under current rules," an official said.
