Rourkela: Following reports of a possible tiger's presence in Sundargarh, wildlife officials have strategically installed 30 camera traps at Jarda and Sole forest ranges in the district's Bonai forest division.
"Given the animal's movement pattern, we anticipate its entry into the adjacent Bonai forest division in the district," Lalit Kumar Patra, divisional forest officer of Bonai forest division, said on Wednesday.
Last week, pugmarks were spotted near Ujalpur forest range in Sundargarh forest division, prompting wildlife officials to initiate a thorough investigation, suspecting the presence of a tiger in the vicinity.
Earlier, Chhattisgarh forest department had alerted its counterparts in Odisha about a suspected tiger's presence at Lephripada in Sundargarh forest division, which had possibly come from Gomarda wildlife sanctuary in Raigarh.
It was speculated that the tiger might have moved to Athkosia reserve forest in Ujalpur forest range.
In response, the wildlife wing issued an advisory to the Sundargarh forest division, urging the installation of camera traps at various locations to monitor the suspected big cat.
Camera traps were subsequently set up in Lephripada range and Athkosia reserve forest, with an alert issued to locals. Residents were advised to avoid entering the forest and refrain from leaving their cattle and goats unattended. Forest officials have intensified patrolling efforts in Lephripada and Ujalpur forest ranges.
The tiger's presence was further suspected when pugmarks were spotted in Sadar forest range on Aug 15, following an attack on a cow.
Despite the installation of camera traps and increased patrolling by forest officials in Sadar and Bamra forest divisions, the animal could not be captured on camera. Reports suggest that the animal then moved to Bagdih forest range in Jharsuguda forest division.
The suspected tiger reportedly travelled 150km in five days, reaching the Kholbilung section under Bamra forest division in Sambalpur district. Pugmarks near a pond in Kholbilung village confirmed the presence of a Royal Bengal tiger. Though camera traps were installed in strategic locations, the tiger is yet to be captured on film.

HC sets aside cop's plea to quash trial court order in 2015 rape case

1 2 Cuttack: Orissa high court has refused to set aside the cognizance order passed by the court of sessions judge, Khurda, against a police officer, who is accused in the 2015 rape of a woman colleague. Justice Sibo Sankar Mishra, while refusing to entertain the officer's plea seeking to quash the Dec 2019 trial court order, allowed the officer the liberty to move the trial court seeking discharge or any other legal remedy. The trial court has been directed to consider all materials on record independently, without being influenced by the high court's observations. On Oct 23, 2024, Justice Mishra had issued an interim stay on further proceedings in connection with the case before the trial court. Though a charge sheet had been filed, charges are yet to be framed against Swain. The case will now proceed before the sessions court. In Tuesday's order, Justice Mishra observed that at the stage of cognizance, the trial court is not expected to conduct a detailed scrutiny of evidence. "The court is only required to examine whether a prima facie case is made out based on the police report and accompanying materials," the judge noted. Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Benefits of Trading Bitcoin CFDs IC Markets Learn More Undo by Taboola by Taboola Justice Mishra further pointed out that since all relevant documents were not placed before the high court, any conclusion at this stage would be speculative. It also emphasised that serious allegations under the IPC and the SC/ST Act require judicial caution before exercising inherent powers to quash proceedings. The inspector was accused of raping a woman sub-inspector in 2015. The FIR was lodged in Jan 2018 at Mahila Police Station. Following investigation, police submitted a final charge sheet on Dec 12, 2019, charging the officer under various IPC Sections and that of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The petitioner argued that the FIR was lodged with a mala fide intent arising from professional dispute, and that key electronic evidence such as social media messages had not been considered by the lower court. It was also submitted that the complainant's version lacked consistency and was not supported by independent or medical evidence. B'deshi Monk With Indian Passport Exposes Big Flaw

1 2 Nagpur: The curious case of Joysen Barua, a Buddhist monk from Bangladesh — one of the first applicants for citizenship under CAA — has shown how it's easy to make an authentic Indian passport with fake documents. On Monday, Barua walked into the regional passport office in Nagpur, handed over his Indian passport and confessed that he had obtained it by submitting forged documents, including Aadhaar card and birth certificate. Barua, who was issued the passport in 2023, is now on the run. The authorities quickly impounded the passport and informed police, who registered an offence. The regional passport officer, Kshtij Gurav, confirmed that a passport was issued to Barua. Police are investigating if his documents were counterfeit. In March 2024 when CAA came into effect, Barua made an application under the new law. Sources told TOI that Barua obtained the passport in the name of Joysen Choudhary, and his date of birth differed from his Bangladeshi documents. In his CAA application, he submitted his school leaving certificate and marksheet issued from Chittagong district in Bangladesh. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo When he was expected to get Indian citizenship through CAA, Barua preferred to surrender the passport and approached the office here, but was named in an FIR. Sources in the passport office admitted there's a loophole in the system, which can be exploited. Passports are issued based on an online system in which documents like Aadhar, PAN, birth certificate, and address proof are uploaded. The applicants get an appointment at the respective passport seva kendras, where documents are taken at face value and there's no mechanism to confirm authenticity from the issuing authority, a top official told TOI. Moreover, it's also expected that veracity of claims is done during police verification. If every document is counter-checked at the seva kendra, issuing of passports can get indefinitely delayed, he said. The Digilocker system can prevent such frauds. It is a cloud-based facility, which allows direct access to documents through the issuing authority. If an applicant uses DigiLocker, then only genuine documents get uploaded. For example, in the case of Aadhaar, it would directly access the Unique Identification Authority of India's (UIDAI) system. In case no Aadhar has been issued, nothing would be uploaded in the passport application. However, even as the DigiLocker system has been available since 2018, there are not many users, and it has not been made mandatory, said a source in the passport office. Barua came to India on a tourist visa through Bodh Gaya, a Buddhist pilgrimage centre in Bihar. It is a common practice among Bangladeshis to reach Gaya and then move to different parts of the country, said a source. An official involved in the case said it was discussed whether Barua can be deported, but it's also being considered that he hails from a persecuted minority community in Bangladesh and CAA was introduced for them. Barua's community lives in the plains of Chittagong while Chakma tribals, who too are Buddhists, live in the hill tracts. Pak-linked drug syndicate busted in Chandigarh, 6 held with Rs 1.25cr worth narcotics

Chandigarh: In a major breakthrough, the UT crime branch has dismantled an interstate drug syndicate with alleged links to Pakistan, arresting six accused and seizing narcotics worth Rs 1.25 crore. The operation revealed a cross-border network that used drones to smuggle drugs into India. The accused include Pooja, daughter of notorious peddler Bala, and two others from Chandigarh — Sameer and Muhammad Juned. Three more — Nihal Singh, Sahibjeet Singh alias Shabu, and Amritpal Singh alias Gopi — hail from Amritsar. Police recovered 654g heroin, 112g cocaine, and a scooter used in the operation. The bust began with Pooja's arrest, leading to a domino effect. She confessed to sourcing heroin from Sameer, who in turn named Juned. The trail led investigators to Amritsar, where the remaining trio was nabbed. All six were reportedly in contact with Pakistan-based handler Jubir Rana, who allegedly used drones to drop consignments across the border. Amritpal, described as the kingpin, was already facing three NDPS cases. Police recovered 536g heroin from him and confirmed his communication with Jubir Rana via Instagram and WhatsApp. Another suspect, Yugraj from Amritsar, was recently arrested by the BSF with 560g heroin. He too was in touch with Jubir, strengthening the cross-border link. All accused were produced in court and remanded to 14-day judicial custody.
