The adidas Samba trainer gets a Dubai makeover with Dream Girl Tailors collaboration

The National18-04-2025
The adidas Samba is getting a Dubai upgrade this weekend, thanks to Dream Girl Tailors in Satwa. It's the first of a set of new collaborations between the German sportswear giant and small businesses in the UAE, Egypt, Saudi Arabia. The Loomhead Collection is the result of a partnership between adidas and local artisans from Dubai, Cairo and Riyadh who were each asked to design a pair of trainers and create shoelaces inspired by their respective cities. In Dubai, that honour has gone to Dream Girl Tailors in Satwa. It has crafted laces in multiple tones of green, blue and white. The special-edition shoe features 'Al Fahidi' stamped in gold on the side, along with the shop's co-ordinates. The collection is strictly limited-edition but will be available to buy at Dream Girl Tailors on Saturday, April 19 and Sunday, April 20. Purchasing the Samba OG or Handball Spezial during the event includes the exclusive shoelaces and an invite to add one-of-a-kind Loomhood customisations. The trainers will also be made available at the adidas Originals store in Dubai Mall from April 21 to April 30. Elsewhere in the region, Riyadh's version will be available at Riyadh Park Mall from April 21 to April 30, while in Cairo, the Egyptian version can be found at Maison 69 from April 24 to April 30. This latest collaboration comes nearly three years after the viral adidas x Ravi trainer. Designed to celebrate under-the-radar establishments that give cities their personality, the project paired adidas with small eateries and cafes around the world. Co-designed with Dubai's much-loved Ravi Restaurant, the green-and-cream Samba featured best-selling dishes printed on the tongue and the number 44 on the side, marking how long the restaurant had been in business. Vicki Fitzsimons, senior brand director at adidas Mena, told The National at the time: 'Our e-commerce site sold out within hours of launch and some fashion retailers sold out within minutes, which is a true testament to the significance of Ravi Restaurant in Dubai.' Can the Dream Girl Tailors edition, and those in Cairo and Riyadh, spark the same kind of frenzy? Time will tell.

Rebel's Romance claims Grosser Preis von Berlin to register eighth G1 victory

Rebel's Romance recorded his eighth G1 victory and captured the Grosser Preis von Berlin for a second time as he comfortably beat Junko at Hoppegarten on Sunday. Godolphin's most decorated horse was returning to the German course having secured his first top-level success in the same race in 2022, the first of four G1 wins in the country. A superb international campaigner, Rebel's Romance has also gone on to major victories in the United States, where he has won two editions of the G1 Breeders' Cup Turf, the UAE, Qatar, Hong Kong and the UK. With Billy Loughnane coming in for the ride, Rebel's Romance broke alertly from his wide draw and the Charlie Appleby-trained seven-year-old tacked over to race in a length second behind Junko. Rebel's Romance closed to within half a length of Junko leaving the back and loomed up on the outside to press for the lead at the top of the straight. Junko rallied after Rebel's Romance established a narrow advantage a furlong and a half out but could not respond to the Godolphin homebred in the closing strides, with three-quarters of a length separating the duo at the line. The victory proved a landmark for Rebel's Romance's sire Dubawi, who has been responsible for 250 Black Type wins in the Godolphin colours. Rebel's Romance is now the most prolific Group winner in the royal blue silks, with 14 Pattern race successes to his name and prize money in excess of £11m, while Billy Loughnane was celebrating a first G1 success in his career. Hugh Anderson, Managing Director of Godolphin (UK and Dubai), said: 'It has been a brilliant afternoon and congratulations to Hoppegarten for a wonderful meeting. It means so much, first for Billy as a young man to win a G1 is fabulous, while Rebel's Romance is a superstar. 'It has been a tremendous weekend and I look forward to talking to our principal, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed, who will be delighted, as we all are.' Charlie Appleby said: 'What more can you say about Rebel's Romance? He writes his own story. I am delighted for His Highness Sheikh Mohammed and team Godolphin, to have a horse who continues to give us such enjoyment at the top level. 'It's a great occasion for Billy, and I'm sure this will be the first of many G1 winners. For him to be able to get his first on a horse like Rebel's Romance, I'm sure it will be a very memorable day. 'I'm delighted for the team, and the story keeps going for Rebel's Romance. It's most likely that he will head for the Canadian International next, and we will form a plan when El Cordobes and Nations Pride return from Saratoga following their runs in the Sword Dancer Stakes.' Billy Loughnane said: 'It's a feeling I can't describe, a feeling of ecstasy. I'm very lucky to be riding in these colours and having the opportunity to sit on a horse like this. A big thanks to Will [Buick], I spoke to him last night and he told me exactly what to do. Rebel's Romance is a star of a horse' El Cordobes flashes home to take G1 Sword Dancer Stakes El Cordobes enjoyed a perfect US debut as he unleashed a late surge to capture the G1 Sword Dancer Stakes at Saratoga on Saturday, 9 August. The Charlie Appleby-trained four-year-old headed across the Atlantic for his first top-level appearance on the back of several strong efforts in the UK, including winning the G2 Princess Of Wales's Stakes at Newmarket's July Festival. Vote No was pushed along into an early lead in the 12-furlong contest, with El Cordobes settling on the inner rail in third behind stablemate Nations Pride, until Far Bridge rushed up to go second after the first three furlongs. El Cordobes continued to save ground on the inside, with Padiddle and Rebel Red shuffling the Godolphin runner back to a close sixth halfway down the back. Nations Pride took up the running turning in and soon opened up daylight over the field, with William Buick kicking into a three-length lead approaching the final furlong.

Liverpool FC, adidas light up Burj Khalifa, reuniting after 13 years

Liverpool FC and adidas have presented the club's new home and away jerseys in a special campaign, marking the first time in 13 years that the two brands have teamed up. Having previously teamed up through some of Liverpool's most iconic eras from 1985-1996 and again from 2006-2012, the three-stripes return to provide players and fans with cutting edge performance technology and lifestyle apparel from this season. The campaign witnessed the brands light up the Burj Khalifa to mark the launch of the new kit, following which the content captured from the collaborative brand shoot in Egypt and the Burj Khalifa launch was rolled out across owned social media channels in the Middle East region. For the Burj Khalifa reveal, the brands partnered with media agency Havas Middle East and production house GOOD Stills. The Liverpool FC kit launch was also brought to life through a special adidas shoot, in partnership with production house Monica Abadir Art Productions in the heart of historic Cairo, celebrating the heritage of Liverpool FC forward Mohamed Salah. 1/7 Liverpool FC x adidas kit reveal Shot at the beautifully restored 17th-century Beit Yakan villa, the shoot blended culture, football and fashion, and celebrated the powerful connection between the club and the region. The timeless architecture and rich historical significance of the location offer a striking visual contrast to the modern energy of the new kit. To celebrate the launch of the new jerseys, adidas and Liverpool FC also released a film titled 'Your Dream. Our Reality'. The film shows a young girl's encounter with the new Liverpool jerseys, leading her on a journey which unfolds through a series of dream-like experiences that blur the line between fantasy and reality. The journey takes her from a dream dinner with icons of past and present such as Ian Rush and Mohamed Salah, to re-creating the iconic Gerrard and Alonso adidas advert with current men's and women's first team players, and a tour of LFC's trophy successes with Sir Kenny Dalglish, before finishing on the Anfield pitch in a climactic final scene. Ben Latty, Chief Commercial Officer at LFC, said, 'This is more than just the launch of a new kit – it marks the beginning of a 10-year relationship for LFC and adidas. Since announcing the partnership in March, there's been a huge sense of anticipation and excitement. This first collection sets the tone for seasons to come.' The launch film is supported by player and product imagery which draws inspiration from the dream dinner scene, plus bespoke video extensions and behind the scenes photography, which will be published across the club, adidas and player channels. The new Liverpool FC Home jersey presents the club's DNA with a dark strawberry red colourway forming the base of the jersey and the adidas three stripes in white running down the sleeves. The classic Liver Bird crest is emblazoned on the chest with a clean-cut crew-neck collar and ribbing on the cuffs offering a brand callback to LFC legacy. The jersey will be paired with red shorts and red socks, with the socks featuring the adidas three stripes at the top and 'LFC' sign-off above the adidas logo on the shin. The Away jersey lands in a colourway synonymous with LFC away kits of the past, featuring a cream off-white base with black and red detailing. For the crest, the Liver Bird sits inside a shield, with the shield shape taking inspiration from the main stand at the original Anfield stadium from 1906, reimagined to replicate the shape of the stand itself. The Away jersey comes with two shorts and socks options. The first being black shorts with cream off-white socks, the alternate being cream off-white shorts with black socks. Sam Handy, GM at adidas Football, said, 'The return of adidas to Liverpool FC is a momentous occasion for us. Seeing our iconic three stripes adorning Liverpool FC kits again is something we're incredibly proud of. The Home jersey is a true representation of the Liverpool DNA – classy and understated, while the Away jersey pays homage to the club's rich history with a unique crest inspired by the original Anfield stadium. I speak on behalf of everyone at adidas when I say this is just the start of an incredible journey and we're extremely excited for what's to come.'
