Prompt repairs to Nira canal could've prevented breach: Yugendra

Time of India5 days ago

Pune: Yugendra Pawar, grandnephew of NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar, who contested the assembly election against his uncle Ajit Pawar from Baramati, on Wednesday criticised the standard of works carried out in and around Baramati.
Parts of Baramati, Indapur, and Daund tehsil in Pune district faced crop damage and flooding in some residential areas after the heavy rain on Sunday that also caused the Nira right bank canal to breach. Yugendra visited the affected areas on Wednesday and interacted with people who told him that the situation had not turned normal.
"These canals are old, some are from the British era and needed regular inspection. If they (state administration) reviewed the condition of canals every two to five years, cracks can be repaired and such disasters prevented," Yugendra said.
Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar represents Baramati constituency and claims that he is responsible for the maximum development of the tehsil. Yugendra did not name his uncle but criticised the administration for not carrying out diligent pre-monsoon works.
"There is some damage in Baramati town and we will have to go deeper to find out the reasons. There has been no casualty. There were pipelines and drains in place, but they were not cleaned before the monsoon. Such incidents are not limited only to Baramati. The state govt spent crores of rupees on the Metro in Mumbai, but its ceiling collapsed. Similarly, the Worli station was flooded after the first rain. Poor work is a problem across the state," Yugendra added.

Bangladesh: Political parties reject Muhammad Yunus's extended time frame, demand election by December

DHAKA: At least 20 political parties, including former PM Khaleda Zia's BNP, Monday rejected Bangladesh chief adviser Muhammad Yunus 's extended time frame for conducting national election, demanding it be held by Dec. Sources, however, said three political parties, including the radical Jamaat-e-Islami and NCP launched by Nahid Islam who led the anti-Sheikh Hasina movement last year, are reportedly supporting Yunus's time frame of holding the poll between Dec 2025 and June 2026. "There is not a single valid reason to push the national election after Dec and BNP expects a 'neutral role' from Muhammad Yunus in taking a final decision," BNP member Salahuddin Ahmed said after the National Consensus Commission dialogue with Yunus. This was the second round of talks between political parties and the Yunus-headed interim govt on the election - pending since last year following the fall of the Hasina-led govt. In Monday's meeting, all but three political parties have demanded elections by Dec, Gono Odhikar Parishad chief Nurul Haque Nur said. Yunus expressed optimism about finalising a broadly accepted 'July Charter' - an agreement built through collective understanding among parties after the ouster of the Hasina govt. Salahuddin hoped Yunus will consider Dec for conducting the election. He also argued the commission has already taken significant time and election before year-end remains feasible. "Full consensus may not be support reforms that benefit the nation and ensure inclusion of all," he added.

Look forward to working with India and supporting them in their endeavoursto combat terrorism: UK MP Shivani Raja

London [UK], June 3 (ANI): UK MP for Leicester East, Shivani Raja, met India's all-party parliamentary delegation, led by Ravi Shankar Prasad, and called it a 'positive meeting.' She expressed willingness to work with India and support it in their endeavours to combat terrorism. In an interview with ANI, Shivani Raja praised India for responding to the terrorist attacks. She called on the UK and other nations to stand up and condemn terrorism. On her meeting with all-party delegation, she said, 'We just finished hosting a roundtable along with the Conservative Friends of India at our party Headquarters with the senior delegation from India. It was a really positive meeting, there was a lot of takeaways from that meeting. But overall, it was really positive and we look forward to working with India and supporting them in their endeavours to combat terrorism.' She said that the UK has always condemned terrorism, and the UK's Shadow Foreign Secretary, Priti Patel, condemned the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam. 'The UK has always condemned terrorist attacks, whether it be in Pahalgam or any other country in the world. This was no different. Our Shadow Foreign Secretary, Priti Patel, wasted no time in calling out the terrorist attack which happened in 22nd April and I think as citizens of this world, whether you are in politics or not in politics, we all have a duty and responsibility to call out terrorism whenever we see it,' Shivani Raja said. Praising India's efforts in its fight against terrorism, Shivani Raja said, 'I think India is doing a fantastic job at responding to the terrorist attacks which come to India. But I think the UK, as a whole, and other countries likewise need to stand up and condemn terrorism. That is exactly what the UK has been doing and will continue to do.' On what efforts the UK should make in the fight against terrorism, she said, 'We should be condemning terrorist attacks and calling out terrorism wherever we see it, regardless of the country. That's what I have been doing, that's what my party has been doing, and that is what the Government here has been doing.' She expressed happiness over the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the UK. She expressed excitement about seeing the bilateral relationship grow under the FTA. Regarding the India-UK relationship, Shivani Raja says, 'I was personally very thrilled, and I am super pleased to welcome the Free Trade Agreement (FTA). We have such a rich and vibrant British-Indian diaspora here in the UK. So, to see that relationship continue to blossom and grow under the FTA will be really special and I am really excited for it.' During the meeting, the delegation emphasised Operation Sindoor as the new normal for India in its firm response to terrorism. UK MPs - Shivani Raja, Ameet Jogia and Reena Ranger attended the meeting. In a post on X, Indian High Commission in the UK stated, 'The All-Party Delegation met the Co-Chair of the Conservative Party Lord Dominic Johnson of Lainston CBE @LordJohnson_ and Co-Chair of the Conservative Friends of India (@wearecfindia) Koolesh Shah at @Conservatives Campaign Headquarters (CCHQ) to underscore that the scourge of terrorism remains a threat to all nations. 'The delegation emphasised #OperationSindoor as the 'new normal' for India in its firm response to cross-border terrorism. The hosts expressed support for India in its fight against terrorism and acknowledged the broader implications of terrorism globally--particularly in the UK. They also underscored the contribution of the Indian diaspora in the UK. MP @ShivaniRaja_LE, @Ameet_Jogia and @Reena_Ranger joined the discussion,' it added. The all-party delegation, led by Ravi Shankar Prasad, includes BJP MP Daggubati Purandeswari, Samik Bhattacharya, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, Congress MPs Ghulam Ali Khatana and Amar Singh, former Union Minister MJ Akbar, and former Ambassador Pankaj Saran. The delegation aims to brief international partners on India's response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and its broader fight against cross-border terrorism. Operation Sindoor was launched on May 7 as a decisive military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack by Pakistan-sponsored terrorists in which 26 people were killed. Indian Armed Forces targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, leading to the death of over 100 terrorists affiliated with terror outfits like the Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen. Gaurav visits Batadrava before taking charge as APCC chief

1 2 Guwahati: Newly appointed Assam PCC chief Gaurav Gogoi on Monday evening arrived in Guwahati to take charge of the post after being named as the successor of outgoing president Bhupen Kumar Borah. Earlier in the day, he went to the revered Batadrava Than in Nagaon before heading towards Guwahati to assume charge on Tuesday morning. Batadrava is the birthplace of the neo-Vaishnavite saint, scholar and social reformer, Srimanta Sankardeva. "In Batadrava Than, we remembered the message the harmony and unity propagated by Srimanta Sankardeva. We are resolved to march ahead in this path shown by him. Our efforts will be to take his ideology to the people in nooks and corners of Assam and India," Gogoi told the media outside the Than. Gogoi's journey from upper Assam to central Assam's Nagaon and then to Morigaon witnessed some undesirable scenes, with municipal administrations confiscating the banners and hoardings installed by Congress to welcome him, citing "unauthorised installation without permission". Gogoi said Congress will take key decisions on important issues like alliance formation ahead of 2026 assembly election only after taking to Congress workers at the grassroots and senior party leaders into confidence. "Unless we strengthen our party we cannot be a good ally. To be a good and strong alliance partner, first one has to increase its strength. We also need to seek public opinion on issues they want the alliance to address," Gogoi said. He added that Congress will expose "corruption under the BJP-led govt".Nagaon Municipal Board (NMB) authority in Nagaon town and Guwahati Municipal Corporation removed banners and hoardings installed by Congress on Monday morning, while the Congress workers prepared to accord grand welcome to the new state PCC chief. The banners and hoarding were removed and taken away by enforcement wings of the municipal bodies for installing these "without prior permission". AICC recently named Gogoi Assam PCC chief which is significant as Assam is going to the assembly election early next year. His elevation to the top post in state PCC came at a time when Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had been attacking him for last few weeks in connection with his British wife's alleged connection with ISI of Pakistan.
