Hindustan Zinc shares in focus as board clears ₹3,823 crore 10 MTPA tailings reprocessing plant

Hindustan Zinc shares will be in focus on Tuesday after the company announced that its Board has approved the establishment of India's first zinc tailings reprocessing plant at Rampura Agucha Mine in Bhilwara district, Rajasthan, with a capacity of 10 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), an investment of ₹3,823 crore, and targeted completion within 28 months. The company stated that the facility will extract residual metals such as zinc and silver from previously processed tailings, converting what was once considered waste into valuable resources. This project forms part of Hindustan Zinc 's broader plan to double its production capacity, reinforcing its leadership in sustainable mining practices . 'We are proud to launch India's first tailings reprocessing plant at Rampura Agucha, developed in partnership with global experts. This facility enables us to reprocess historical waste and store it responsibly, in line with high environmental standards. It strengthens our unique value proposition and supports our ambitious 2x growth vision while advancing our broader sustainability commitments. Modern tailing operations also create opportunities to innovate and recover a broader range of metals that are important for technological progress and the energy transition,' said Arun Misra, CEO of Hindustan Zinc. Headquartered in Udaipur, Hindustan Zinc operates zinc, lead, and silver underground mines, as well as smelters in Rajasthan and Uttarakhand. The new project is aligned with India's projected doubling of zinc demand over the next five to ten years, driven by large-scale investments in infrastructure and the steel sector. Earlier this year, the Board had also approved investments to expand refined metal capacity by 250 kilotonnes per annum and upgrade mines and milling infrastructure with an outlay of nearly ₹12,000 crore. The company noted that these expansions support its long-term growth strategy while strengthening its role in the circular economy through the reuse of industrial by-products. Hindustan Zinc emphasised its commitment to sustainability, highlighting achievements such as a 15% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions intensity in FY25 compared to a 2020 baseline, the launch of EcoZen—Asia's first low-carbon 'green' zinc produced with renewable energy—and becoming the first Indian metals and mining company to secure Science Based Targets initiative validated 1.5°C-aligned emissions goals.
