FilOil: Allen Liwag saves day as Benilde escapes Mapua in preseason tiff
Allen Liwag came through in the clutch to help De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde escape a familiar foe in Mapua University, 58-56, in the 18th Filoil Preseason Cup on Sunday.
Tied at 55-all, the 6-foot-6 reigning NCAA MVP sank the biggest shot of the game — an and-one floater against the defense of Ivan Lazarte that put the Blazers ahead by three in the final 1:05 of the game, 58-55.
The Cardinals made a desperate comeback attempt but Lazarte and Clint Escamis missed their three-point attempts in the game's final moments. Escamis would split his freebies in the final eight seconds, but that wasn't enough to turn things around for the defending NCAA champions.
Liwag finished with 11 points and was the only Blazer in double figures. He also had six rebounds, two steals, and two blocks.
Roger Ondoa, whose layup with 2:41 left in the fourth allowed Benilde to force the deadlock that eventually led to the Liwag game-winner, tallied six markers and four boards. Matthew Oli and Shawn Umali both chipped in with six apiece as well.
Lazarte paced Mapua with 17 points while Escamis did it on both ends with 12 markers, seven rebounds, four assists, and six steals.
The scores:
Benilde 58 -
Liwag 11, Oli 6, Ondoa 6, Umali 6, Gaspay 5, Cajucom 4, Galas 4, Celis 3, Gonzaga 3, Sanchez 3, Torres 3, Ancheta 2, Moore 2, Daja 0, Eusebio 0, Jalalon 0.

Rookie Raymark Betco comes alive late as Benilde beats Mapua for bronze finish
NCAA By BEA MICALLER,GMA Integrated News Rookie Raymark Betco provided the finishing blow as the embattled De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde escaped Mapua University, 26-24, 8-25, 25-20, 25-20, to claim the bronze medal in NCAA Season 100 men's volleyball on Wednesday at the FilOil Centre. The high-leaping opposite spiker converted the last three points for the Blazers as they salvaged a podium finish after losing twice in the Final Four round against Colegio de San Juan de Letran. Mapua threatened a fourth-set comeback with Arjay Ramos breaking a 22-all deadlock on a down-the-line hit to give the Cardinals a one-point cushion. Benilde then turned to a youngster in Betco, who soared from the opposite side to knot things up again. He then put the roof on Ramos to deliver the match point before destroying the two-man block of Adrian Musni and Ramos to put the seal. Betco finished with 12 points while James Marasigan top-scored with 14 markers together with six digs and 13 receptions. Rocky Motol chipped in 10 points laced with seven digs and 17 receptions. Ramos laced the Cardinals with 18 points on 14 attacks, two aces, and two blocks while Barbie San Andres and Olsen Jamisola chimed in with 12 and 11 markers apiece. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Louie Ramirez stars vs. Indonesian club in Alas Pilipinas Invitationals opener
Louie Ramirez shone on both ends to steer the Philippines to a 25-23, 27-29, 25-21, 25-22 win against Jakarta Bhayangkara Presisi of Indonesia in the Alas Pilipinas Invitationals on Tuesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. The former NCAA MVP out of the Perpetual ALTAs poured in 25 points anchored on 21 attacks, three blocks, and one ace to rally the hosts against the mighty Indonesians to open their home stand on a winning note. "Ang mindset lang namin is mailaro 'yung dapat na mailaro namin at gusting mangyari ni coach Angiolino kasi grabe 'yung paghihirap namin sa training na araw-araw," Ramirez said. "Sabi lang niya maipakita namin kung ano 'yung gusto niyang mangyari." Ramirez made his presence felt early, unleashing a flurry of attacks that allowed the Philippines to take a 20-19 lead in the opening set before opposite hitter Steven Rotter finished it off from the left side. The Ramirez-Rotter tandem continued to work wonders in Set 2, but an attack error from the former NCAA star allowed the Indonesian club to take the extended frame to level the series. Alas made sure to create some separation in the third with team captain Marck Espejo gettin lucky on the push to give his side the match point at 24-20 before Rotter sealed it with an off-the-block bullet, 25-20. Debuting Ken Batas, the reigning UAAP MVP, provided the spark off the bench by scoring three quick points in the fourth frame, including a huge rejection that sent Alas to the match point, 24-21. Indonesia's own service error put the punctuation for the Philippines. Rotter finished with 14 points while NU star Buds Buddin chipped in 11 markers. Alas Pilipinas will look to make it back-to-back wins when the FIlipinos tangle with Hyundai Capital Skywalkers of South Korea on Wednesday. —JMB, GMA Integrated News
