Britain's longest serving prisoner is 'slowly dying' under new 'barbaric' regime
Nicknamed Hannibal the Cannibal due to his crimes, Robert Maudsley is struggling after being moved to a new prison as he is 'especially vulnerable' to infection.
A new "barbaric" jail regime is slowly killing Britain's longest serving prisoner, according to his new love.
Robert Maudsley, 71, suffered Covid during the pandemic and has been left especially vulnerable to infection as a result of his extraordinary time in solitary confinement.
For 47 years, a quadruple killer, nicknamed 'Hannibal the Cannibal' by fellow prisoners, he has been kept apart from the rest of the prison population.
It now equates to more than 17,000 consecutive days alone in his cell. But he was moved from Wakefield jail, known as Monster Mansion, in April after a row over the 'privileges' there, reports the Mirror.
He had been on hunger strike, refusing food over several weeks, though he has started eating again. He was taken to Whitemoor jail, Cambridgeshire, where he is being held on a specialist wing. His brothers Paul and Kevin have found it hard to visit him from their native Merseyside.
He found love with Loveinia Grace Mackenney, 69, who writes to him regularly. Loveinia said: "He had Covid 19 twice and almost died.
"This new regime is slowly killing him. I believe they knew that was a risk when they moved him. He is totally different now, he cannot write the way he did before because he thinks his letters are being checked, he has not had his TV or radio, it is barbaric."
Loveinia is concerned that the hunger strike and new regime are combining to slowly kill Maudsley. In his letters to her, he told of his miserable childhood, taken into care due to neglect and beatings at home.
He was first locked up for manslaughter when he was 21 in 1974. On July 28, 1978, already serving life, Maudsley killed two fellow prisoners in Wakefield jail.
He was said to have told a prison guard: 'There'll be two short on the roll call.'
He had already killed a fellow patient in Broadmoor secure hospital, in 1974.
The victim was found with a plastic spoon blade in his ear, which led to Maudsley's nicknames, first 'Spoons', then Hannibal the Cannibal, amid claims that he had eaten his brain.
Special provision was made for him inside Wakefield, and his cell was compared to one used to house Dr Hannibal Lecter, played by Anthony Hopkins, in his Oscar winning role in the 1991 film 'Silence of the Lambs'.
The Prison Service declined to comment on individual prisoners. However, a source stressed that no prisoners are kept in solitary confinement in the UK penal system.

During the sentencing, Bear, 35, was given a restraining order and told not to contact Georgia for five years and was also ordered to sign the sex offenders register. Speaking in court, Georgia said that she felt 'violated' as she recalled the extent of the impact that the footage being published without her consent had on her life. 'I had to live in fear that this was going to come out and my family were going to know about it. It was just like the worst feeling you can ever possibly imagine. I felt violated, I felt embarrassed - I hated myself for a really long time,' she said. Bear, famed for his appearances on Celebrity Big Brother and Ex on the Beach, was released in January 2024 after serving just half his time in prison. In March 2024, he was ordered to pay £22,305, which would be given to HM Treasury and distributed to police charities, and was also ordered to pay £5,000 in compensation to Georgia for emotional and financial distress. Last year, Georgia released her memoir Taking Back My Power: Our Bodies. Our Consent in which she reflected on her nightmare. 'It's a hard read,' she admitted to the Mirror. 'There was a lot of traumatic things that happened to me very close together, but I hope that people can be inspired and hope I can truly help people going through hard times to navigate their journey and to have a bit of faith that it's not the end and there are tools to get through those moments. And once you do there's always something on the other side.' Following the news of Georgia's MBE recognition, a source told Daily Mail: "Georgia is incredibly proud to receive such an honour. She has been campaigning and working hard for many years now, to be recognised for her efforts means everything to her. "Georgia will continue to raise awareness, hopefully this will be the beginning of more improvements for women and girls and their fight for online safety." Shamed Bear now lives a very different life and a week after his prison release, he claimed he had 'no money' and 'cried himself to sleep' as he slept in his parents' spare room. In August 2023, it was reported that Bear put his three-bed Essex home on the market for £525,000. Although Bear attempted to present an image of wealth during his trial, the Rolls Royce he drove to court case was revealed to be rented, while his opulent-looking Rolex watches were found to be fake. In September 2023, Bear's loyal fiancée Jessica Smith had ditched him having previously vowed to stick by Bear's side. Jessica, who has since welcomed her first child, underwent laser treatment to have her tattoo tributes to Bear removed, which included an engagement ring tat and the name 'Stephen' inked across her arm. In January this year, Bear taunted the police as he posted a video from Brazil with his new 18-year-old girlfriend. "The police can't catch me now," Bear bragged. "Life's good. I thought I'd come on here guys and say I love you all, simple as that. I love you all. Stay true, because this year I'm fully active, I'm off licence. The police, they could still be after me, but I'm in Brazil. They can't catch me now. Catch me if you can." Bear continued: "I'm in Brazil, I don't know if you've heard. This is my 18-year-old Latina girlfriend, say hello baby. We just chilling, I got eight music videos I got to shoot while I'm in Brazil. Thinking of looking at some property while I'm over here." Police find drugs and XL Bully in sting at Glasgow flat as two arrested
Cops raided the home and found the drugs stash worth thousands of pounds along with the unlicensed dog. Thousands of pounds worth of drugs and an unlicensed XL Bully were discovered following a police raid on a Glasgow home. Cops arrested two people following the sting operation on the city's Gatehouse Street on June 3 where the force uncovered a drugs stash worth around £4,000 of drugs as well as the dog. A 29-year-old woman and a 33-year-old man were arrested and charged in connection with drugs offences and both have now appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court. A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "A man and woman have been arrested in connection with drugs offences following an operation on Tuesday, 3 of June, 2025. Dad murdered in horror Benidorm attack as hunt continues for killer
Grandad Mike Rydings would have just turned 54. His killer has never been traced. A holiday to Benidorm ended in an unthinkable disaster when a British dad was fatally attacked after watching a World Cup match. Mike Rydings, 47, had jetted out to the Spanish resort in June 2018 with pals to celebrate a birthday and soak up the 2018 World Cup atmosphere. After a night enjoying a few drinks at a bar, the dad-of-two was left fighting for his life after he was viciously attacked in the early hours of June 23, reports Manchester Evening News. The builder, from Wythenshawe, Manchester, was separated from his mates on the resort's Avenida de Mallorca strip when he was set upon by a member of a group of five or six unknown men. Mike was punched in the face, his nose was broken. He fell to the ground, hitting his head and sustaining horrific injuries. He spent a month unconscious in hospital, with his then-pregnant daughter Hayley and sister Nicola flying out to be with him by his side as he lay hooked up to ventilator machines. Mike was repatriated to Salford Royal Hospital, where he spent the remaining year of his life unable to move or speak. He remained in a vegatative state and required round the clock care until his tragic death in August 2019, aged 48. Speaking on what would have been his 54th birthday, Mike's daughter Hayley said the family has spent years in the dark and 'unable to have closure without answers' as they issued another desperate appeal for information. "You can't ever really move on, because you don't have any answers," Hayley told the Manchester Evening News. "It's been years and we haven't been told anything. "At the time, there were so many different witness stories. At one point we were told it was a stag party and someone in camouflage clothing. Then we were told it was a bouncer. "One stated that, the night he was attacked, my dad had a drink and was seen backing off with his hands in the air when he was punched to the nose, which broke, and then he fell backwards onto his head. "They said they have never been able to get the sound of him hitting the ground out of their head." Michael - also known as Mike - had been to the Hippodrome Bar with a group of 30 mates when the lifelong Manchester United fan became separated. Despite extensive enquiries by both Spanish police and Greater Manchester Police, no arrests have ever been made. Officers interviewed more than 15 English tourists who were in Benidorm that night. The man suspected of attacking Mike was described as white, aged in his 20s or 30s, of larger build, 5ft 7ins to 6ft tall - possibly wearing camouflage clothing. The assault happened in an area popular with tourists. Bars were busy with drinkers watching the world cup and enjoying a night out. Hayley, 36, added: "My dad's partner at the time got the call from one of his friends to tell her what had happened. When you hear that, you still never think it will be as bad as what we walked into. "When I first saw him in the hospital and he was lying there with tubes everywhere it was so painful I had to walk back out. "I was pregnant with one of my daughters, and I flew out the next day with my partner. Between me and Nicola his sister we kept going back and forth to make sure he was never on his own. "It was so hard on us all. I had a young child at the time too, so it was really difficult." Mike was flown back and admitted to Salford Royal Hospital. Despite surviving until the August the following year, Hayley said he was unable to move or speak, and that she had 'already lost him' before his life support was turned off. "He couldn't move, he couldn't talk and he couldn't breath without a machine," Hayley added. "But there were days where it seemed like he was getting better and he'd take breaths on his own. "It would build up our hope up and we thought he might be able to have some quality of life. But every time you got up there, you'd hit a brick wall. "Only his eyes were his very limited communication via blinking. You never knew if he understood you or not. It was like we'd already lost him. He was such a proud person and for him to be like that... it just wasn't him. He was always out and about and active. "My dad never got to hold her or touch my daughter because he was in hospital. In 2022, I had a son which would have been his only grandson. He had always wanted a grandson." Greater Manchester Police confirmed there had been no updates in the case, which remains in the hands of Spanish authorities. Anyone who may have information or remember anything that may resonate from a trip to Benidorm in the summer of 2018 is still urged to contact police with any details they may have. Mike had last been seen wearing a red Hugo Boss t-shirt outside the Hippodrome Bar on Benidorm Square before the brutal assault. Hayley added: "It was like the Spanish police just thought a British man had gone over, got p***ed and started a fight. But my dad was not a violent person. "We want to get this out there again, to see if anyone can remember anything or will speak out."
