RTD issues summonses over reckless bus driving caught on video
KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Department (RTD) has taken enforcement action against two bus operators after viral videos showed their drivers behaving dangerously on Malaysian roads.
In a statement, RTD said it received two separate complaints involving public service vehicles and launched investigations that led to summonses and official action under the Road Transport Act 1987.
In the first case, a driver for StarMart Express Sdn Bhd was caught driving on the emergency lane and overtaking dangerously along the North-South Expressway near the Kulai R&R northbound. The driver was issued a notice for two offences under the Road Traffic Rules 1956.
In the second incident, involving Sanwa Tours (M) Sdn Bhd, the RTD issued a notice under Section 114 for both the driver and vehicle owner after a bus was seen driving recklessly in the Mersing area.
"This department will not compromise with any vehicle (operator) that violates the law and will take firm action against those involved," the department said.
Operators were also urged to monitor their drivers' behaviour to ensure full compliance with traffic regulations.

Death Of Family Of Four: Trailer Driver Gets 8 Years' Jail, RM80,000 Fine
TAIPING, June 18 (Bernama) -- A trailer driver was sentenced to eight years in prison and fined RM80,000 by the High Court here today after he was found guilty of dangerous driving that caused the deaths of four members of a family in an accident in Sungai Siput five years ago. Judge Noor Ruwena Md Nurdin dismissed the appeal by Y Vethri Vel, 31, and imposed eight years in jail and an RM20,000 fine for each of the amended charges. The sentences are to run concurrently from June 13, with an additional three months' jail if he fails to pay the fine. He is also disqualified from getting a driver's licence for three years from the conviction date, and the details of the conviction must be recorded on his driving licence. The father of two was found guilty on four amended charges under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333) for driving recklessly, resulting in the death of Mohamad Faiz Bakhari, 28 and his wife, Nik Iedayu Nik Hassan, 30, the couple's baby Muhammad Faqih Irsyad, 16 months and Nike Iedayu's sister Nik Ifeka Nik Hassan, 27, at Kilometre 37 of the Ipoh-Kuala Kangsar Road at around 10.20 pm on Feb 13, 2020. On Dec 14, 2023, the Sungai Siput Magistrate's Court found Vethri Vel guilty under Section 44(1)(b) of the same Act for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, resulting in death. The charges were amended to Section 41 (1) of the Act after the High Court found reasonable doubt regarding the accused's blood sample, as raised by the defence. Vethri Vel, represented by lawyers Ranjit Singh Sandhu and Faazil Rahman, appealed for a good behaviour bond, citing the soft tissue injuries he sustained in the crash. However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Waffy Ismail requested the court to deliver a proportionate sentence, stressing that the accused's dangerous driving had resulted in the deaths of four people, leaving behind a three-year-old child who is now an orphan. The defence informed the court that they would be filing an appeal at the Court of Appeal.

Both had prior criminal records, with one of them having at least four including for murder, rioting, and possessing weapons during a riot. The report stated that following the Bintulu shooting, the pair went into hiding in Kuala Lumpur. The authorities, however, have yet to confirm these details, it added. According to earlier news reports, the two men were shot multiple times on their bodies and heads by a group of unidentified individuals, who rushed at the pair as they and other individuals were about to enter a vehicle to leave the shopping mall at Jalan Loke Yew. Security camera footage at the mall showed the shooting was perpetrated by five persons, with the incident lasting about 30 seconds. The Nov 7 Bintulu hotel incident claimed the life of a 36-year-old man, identified by police as Peter Ling Deng Sing from Sibu, who was shot and slashed to death at the fourth floor car park.
