Time running out for Watford and Argyle after Championship stalemate

The Guardian29-03-2025

A goalless draw in their final game before the clocks go forward means time is running out quicker than ever for both these teams. Rock-bottom Plymouth Argyle started brightly, weathered a storm and then nearly snatched an unlikely win at the end when substitute Muhamed Tijani shot just wide in the closing minutes.
Certainly their loyal fans were the happier, but the point still leaves the gap to survival looking impossibly wide with just seven games remaining. Likewise Watford's playoff hopes are disappearing after their stuttering 2025 form continued where it left off for the international break.
Neither side could conjure a clearcut opening until the 28th minute when Ryan Hardie turned sharply to find that in one move he had left the entire Watford defence behind him. His shot was firm and accurate and would have crept inside a post had Watford goalkeeper Egil Selvik not pushed it to safety with a strong left hand.
Argyle's top scorer is still finding his way back to full fitness after a four-match injury lay-off and his ability to take better advantage of such chances is central to any hopes the Pilgrims still have of making it through to a third season in the Championship.
While they have undoubtedly improved since the departure of Wayne Rooney on New Year's Eve, his replacement Miron Muslic still has not been able to improve the leakiest defence in the Championship, 27 goals conceded in 15 previous games in 2025 compounding their status.
But for once their three giant central pillars looked firm and Watford lacked the imagination to pick a path around them. When the Hornets did find a gap with a pass, they failed to pick out a teammate and, save for one offside effort by Ryan Andrews, Conor Hazard had a worry-free opening 45 minutes.
If Rocco Vata's low drive on the half-time whistle had crept inside rather than flashing past the outside of the Argyle goal it would have saved Watford from the boos that greeted the break.
The same player handed Argyle another escape two minutes after the restart when one touch too many allowed two defenders time to block his shot when it eventually arrived.

A sharp cross from Giorgi Chakvetadze failed to get the touch it needed and Plymouth continued to ride their luck when Vata's deflected shot hit the crossbar.
By this stage Kwadwo Baah's not inconsiderable presence had been added to the mix but when put through one on one it was guile he needed rather than blasting the ball straight at Hazard.
On a different day, perhaps Vakoun Bayo would have bundled the ball in at the far post or done better than find the side netting with two further gilt-edged chances.

Ryan Mason leaves Tottenham to take over as West Brom head coach

Mason quickly emerged as a leading candidate for the Championship club after they dismissed Tony Mowbray on April 21. Spurs' roller-coaster 2024-25 campaign – in which they secured Europa League success – only ended on May 25 and forced West Brom to bide their time but Mason, after a short holiday, decided to accept their offer and take his first step into management. Introducing our new men's first team Head Coach, Ryan Mason! 💙🤍 — West Bromwich Albion (@WBA) June 2, 2025 'I'm absolutely thrilled to have been appointed head coach of West Bromwich Albion,' Mason told the club's website. 'This is a huge club with a fantastic infrastructure and an incredible fan-base and I am excited about what we can achieve together. 'Having spoken at length to the board and those at the club, I am convinced that Albion is the perfect place for me to be and I can't wait to get started. 'I will bring with me a huge amount of enthusiasm, dedication and ambition and look forward to a positive future together at such a fantastic club.' At the age of 33, Mason becomes the youngest boss in the Championship and this move ends his seven-year coaching career at Tottenham. Mason, who progressed through Spurs' academy to play 70 times for his boyhood team, was forced to cut short his playing career in 2018 after he sustained a fractured skull in a Premier League match for Hull at Chelsea a year earlier. A decade on from earning his solitary England cap against Italy, the London-born coach will embark on his first managerial role in the 2025-26 season. Highly-rated coach Mason held talks with Belgian club Anderlecht in October before a mutual decision was made to remain at Spurs, which enabled him to play his part in the club's first trophy since 2008. After two previous caretaker stints at Tottenham, including leading the club in the 2021 Carabao Cup final, Mason has long been tipped for a future in management. A post shared by Ryan Mason (@ryan8mason) Mason initially started coaching at youth level for Spurs upon his playing retirement before being promoted to Antonio Conte's coaching staff three years later, not long after a seven-game spell as interim boss. Another caretaker role came in 2023 following Conte's departure before Ange Postecoglou kept Mason as part of his backroom team. After a further two years as Tottenham first-team coach, Mason will take over West Brom after they finished ninth in the Championship. Mowbray was dismissed in April after their play-off hopes ended despite only being hired in January to replace Carlos Corberan, who left to take over at Valencia. Mason, whose contract at Spurs was up this month, will be tasked with leading West Brom back into the top flight for the first time since 2021.

Credit: Kenny Ramsay Marco Tilio, 23, enjoyed a standout campaign in his homeland Australia with his old club Melbourne City rounded off this season with another A-League title. The pacy winger clinched the Championship trophy following their 1-0 Grand Final win over rivals Melbourne Victory on Saturday. Tilio is in arguably the best form of his career with five goals and five assists in 19 games - eclipsing his final season in his first spell at City which earned him his move to Glasgow. The Socceroos star played just two games under Rodgers before being shipped back to Melbourne for another lengthy spell. Advertisement While he was meant to return to Glasgow this summer - after international duty for Australia - Tilio recently admitted that his future at Celtic is "up in the air". His contract at Parkhead runs for another three years but Tilio has hinted he could stay in Australia after all. And Melbourne City director of football Michael Petrillo hopes that will be the case as he's revealed talks are ongoing with Celtic about potentially extending his loan for another year. Addressing the winger's future, he told the Football Fever podcast: 'We are still negotiating whether he stays another year or goes to Europe. We hope he stays.' Advertisement Responding to questions surrounding his Celtic return at the weekend, Tilio said: 'My future is obviously up in the air at the moment, so I'm unsure what is going to happen. 'It's always been about just playing well. I know when I'm playing well people are always watching." Celtic loan star Marco Tilio scores a stunning goal on return to Melbourne City Tilio was a £1.5million signing for the Scottish champions in the summer of 2023. A thigh injury derailed his campaign before it even got underway and meant he had to wait until November to make his debut. Advertisement But despite his derailed start and later move back to Australia, Tilio does still believe he could make an impact in Europe. He told Optus Sport last year: "I'd hope to be saying I'll be playing consistently over in Europe. "I'd like to say. We'll see but, yeah, that's where my head's at."
