Siti Bainun seeks to use police report by Zayn Rayyan's mother in appeal
Rumah Bonda founder Siti Bainun Ahd Razali has filed a motion in the Court of Appeal seeking to introduce a police report lodged by Ismanira Abdul Manaf as fresh evidence in her appeal.
PUTRAJAYA : Rumah Bonda founder Siti Bainun Ahd Razali is seeking to introduce a police report filed by Zayn Rayyan Zaim Ikhwan's mother as fresh evidence in her appeal against her conviction for the neglect and abuse of a teenager with Down syndrome.
Counsel Haijan Omar, representing Siti Bainun, informed a three-member Court of Appeal panel that his client's notice of motion seeks permission to introduce a police report made by Ismanira Abdul Manaf on July 25 last year.
The report was lodged two months after the High Court upheld Siti Bainun's 12-year prison sentence on May 2, 2024 for neglecting and abusing 13-year-old Bella in 2021.
Haijan said his client only became aware of the police report on March 24 this year.
'Our application also seeks permission to call Ismanira and the fifth prosecution witness in connection with the report,' he told the court.
In response, deputy public prosecutor Asmah Musa told the panel that the police were currently investigating the matter and the prosecution was awaiting the outcome of those investigations.
The details of the report were not revealed in court today.
Justice Azman Abdullah, chairing the appeals panel, fixed June 3 for case management.
Also on the bench were Justices Azmi Ariffin and Choo Kah Sing.
Outside the courtroom, Haijan told reporters that Ismanira's report contained an allegation against a witness in Bella's case.
Ismanira and her husband, Zaim Ikhwan Zahari, are currently on trial for allegedly neglecting their son Zayn Rayyan. His body was discovered in a stream near their home on December 6, 2023, a day after he was reported missing.
On May 3, 2023, sessions court judge Izralizam Sanusi sentenced Siti Bainun to 12 years' imprisonment and dismissed her application for a stay of execution.
Siti Bainun was also ordered to sign a RM5,000 good behaviour bond for five years with one surety, and to perform 200 hours of community service within six months of her release.

UPSI student bus crashes with MPV on East-West Highway in Gerik, at least 15 dead
IPOH, June 9 — At least 15 people were killed in an accident involving a bus carrying students from Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI) and a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) on the East-West Highway in Banun, Gerik, early this morning. Man electrocuted while plucking mangoes with metal rod

Papar fire and rescue station chief Rozlan Osman said the victim is believed to have climbed the tree and used an iron rod to poke at the mangoes. The rod then came into contact with a nearby electric cable, causing the man to be electrocuted and leaving him unconscious on the tree. 'Firemen proceeded to lower the victim using a ladder and rescue rope after the electricity supply was cut off,' he said when contacted today.

JPJ opens probe paper on lorry company in fatal FRU crash

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The road transport department (JPJ) has opened an investigation paper on the lorry company involved in the accident that took the lives of nine Federal Reserve Unit personnel in Teluk Intan, Perak last month. JPJ senior director (enforcement) Kifli Ma Hassan said the investigation was being conducted under Section 57 of the Land Public Transport Act 2010, relating to operator licence conditions. 'JPJ has seized the lorry involved, and the investigating officer has been instructed to complete the investigation paper by the end of this month. 'Once completed, the investigation paper will be submitted to the deputy public prosecutor for further action,' Bernama quoted him as saying. Klifli said the initial investigation found that the lorry company had violated its permit conditions. 'The lorry company was found to have violated the permit conditions by carrying an unauthorised load, namely rocks, while the approved permit was to transport coal. 'We are still investigating the case and appropriate action will be taken,' he said. On May 12, a lorry collided with a truck carrying 18 FRU members on Jalan Chikus-Sungai Lampan in Teluk Intan, while they were on their way back to Ipoh. Nine FRU members were killed, while nine others were injured.
