Saudi Arabia designates sites for seven new mining complexes

Zawyaa day ago
RIYADH — The Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources has announced the allocation of sites for seven mining complexes across the regions of Riyadh, Makkah, Asir, and Al-Baha, as part of its efforts to enhance transparency.
According to ministry spokesperson Jarrah Al-Jarrah, the designated locations include four in the Riyadh region: the 'Tamir 2' complex in Al-Majma'ah (1.99 sq km), a site in Afif (10.38 sq km), the 'Tayri' complex in Rumah (37.88 sq km), and 'Dawadmi 6' (30.62 sq km).
In the Makkah region, a site was allocated for the East Faydat Al-Musallam complex in Taif, covering 25 sq km.
In Asir, the ministry expanded the Al-Hadbah and Al-Qurain complex in Bisha to reach a total area of 72.78 sq km.
Meanwhile, in Al-Baha, a new complex was designated north of Wadi Al-Hijrah in Al-Hijrah governorate, covering 0.66 sq km.
Al-Jarrah emphasized that establishing these mining complexes enhances governance across the sector, bolsters investor confidence, and prevents unauthorized encroachments on mining areas.
He noted that the move supports environmental, health, and safety standards, and encourages local community participation in line with Saudi Arabia's Mining Investment Law.
The mining complexes are expected to stimulate regional development by creating job opportunities for local residents, increasing local procurement, ensuring environmental compliance, and promoting sustainable development through rehabilitation and closure plans for mining sites.

Saudi Arabia launches first pilot phase of self-driving vehicles in Riyadh

RIYADH — Saudi Arabia has launched the initial pilot phase of autonomous vehicles in Riyadh, marking a significant step toward smart, AI-driven transport systems. Minister of Transport and Logistic Services and Chairman of the Transport General Authority, Eng. Saleh Al-Jasser, inaugurated the program on Wednesday, emphasizing its role in enabling cutting-edge technologies and advancing a safe, intelligent transport ecosystem. The project will operate in real-life settings across seven key areas in Riyadh, including Terminals 2 and 5 at King Khalid International Airport, Roshn Business Front, Princess Nourah University, the North Train Station, and the Transport General Authority's headquarters. A total of 13 pickup and drop-off points have been designated. Developed through a cross-sector partnership involving the Ministry of Interior, SDAIA, the Geospatial Authority, and private firms like AiDriver, WeRide, and Uber, the project reflects Saudi Arabia's drive to localize innovation and foster public-private collaboration. The vehicles will be monitored closely by onboard safety officers throughout the 12-month pilot phase. They will operate on major highways and urban roads under the direct regulatory and technical oversight of the Authority. Al-Jasser said the initiative demonstrates the Kingdom's commitment to sustainable mobility and economic growth, calling it 'a model for smart and secure transport partnerships.' The Authority confirmed the pilot aims to prepare for broader national rollout, positioning Saudi Arabia at the forefront of autonomous mobility in the region. © Copyright 2022 The Saudi Gazette. Saudi business delegation arrives in Syria eyeing $4bln in deals

Saudi Arabia's investment minister led a business delegation travelling to Syria on Wednesday, where they were expected to sign deals worth around $4 billion as part of Riyadh's efforts to support the country's post-war recovery. The Gulf kingdom has been a crucial supporter of interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa's government, which came to power after toppling longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad in December and is now seeking to rebuild Syria after a 14-year civil war. Saudi investment minister Khalid bin Abdulaziz Al-Falih, who brought around 130 Saudi businesspeople to Damascus, is set to hold meetings with Syria's leadership ahead of a two-day investment conference opening on Wednesday, according to people due to attend. Saudi Arabia has shown interest in Syria's energy and hospitality sectors, as well as airports, a diplomat and a Syrian businessman familiar with the matter told Reuters. The two countries are also expected to launch a joint business council, said the Syrian businessman. The investment conference was initially scheduled to take place in June but was delayed due to the war between Iran and Israel. It is going ahead this week despite sectarian clashes in Syria's southern city of Sweida that have left hundreds dead. The violence is a reminder of the lingering instability in Syria, even as foreign investors explore opportunities there. Companies, many from Gulf states and Turkey, have expressed interest in rebuilding Syria's power generation capacity, roads, ports and other damaged infrastructure. Syria has signed a $7 billion power deal with Qatar and a $800 million agreement with UAE-based port company DP World in recent months, while U.S. energy firms are also set to draw up a master plan for the country's energy sector. For its part, Saudi Arabia, along with Qatar, paid off Syria's World Bank arrears, opening the possibility of new lending. Syria's al-Sharaa made his first trip abroad as president to Saudi Arabia in February. And the kingdom's Crown Prince and de-facto ruler Mohammed Bin Salman successfully lobbied U.S. President Donald Trump to lift sanctions seen as holding back private investment.

With award wins in the first half of 2025 totaling Dh13.9 billion, and a backlog that stood at Dh49.9 billion by the end of June 2025, NMDC Energy continues to pursue opportunities that align market demand with its long-term strategy, whereby it continues to build its pipeline of projects, which reached Dh66 billion by the end of the second quarter. In Q2 2025, revenue grew 21 per cent year on year to Dh4.4 billion and a net profit of 12 per cent to Dh366 million, supported by sustained momentum across core EPC and industrial operations. NMDC Energy's 400,000 sqm fabrication yard in Ras Al Khair, Saudi Arabia, became fully operational during the quarter. The facility strengthens the company's offshore EPC and modular construction capabilities across the region, supporting both current delivery and future growth. Mohamed Hamad Almehairi, Chairman of NMDC Energy, said: 'Our progress this quarter demonstrates NMDC Energy's pivotal role in building regional industrial capability at pace and at scale, as we charter a strategic path that emphasizes future-ready initiatives and targeted growth. Ahmed Salem Al Dhaheri, CEO of NMDC Energy, added: 'We continue to build precision and scale into our operations. We advanced local manufacturing partnerships, expanded regional fabrication capacity, and brought one of the Gulf's most advanced yards online. These steps position NMDC Energy to undertake more complex EPC work – faster and at a greater scale. We are building the next phase of our growth with precision, ambition and impact as we shape a world where infrastructure meets excellence.' NMDC Energy continues to strengthen its long-lasting relationship with Aramco, with a 3-year extension to its long-term agreement (LTA) and an option for an additional 3 years. This extension solidifies NMDC Energy's continued role in supporting Aramco's offshore projects and contributing to Saudi Arabia's economic ambitions.
