New Delhi: Pakistan has fought several wars with India and has lost all of them. Not only against India, but whenever Pakistan encounters other countries, the Pakistani army has to face humiliation. However, whenever you see a Pakistani army officer, they are usually adorned with several medals on their uniform. In this context, a common question arises, if the Pakistani army always faces defeat, then what are the soldiers carrying so many medals for? Let's explore the story behind these medals of the Pakistan Army.
Pakistan has lost to India in the India-Pakistan War (1947-48), the India-Pakistan War (1965), the India-Pakistan War (1971), and the Kargil War (1999). In fact, Pakistan faces not only military defeat but also diplomatic losses. Then why does Pakistan award medals? It should be noted that every country's army awards its soldiers medals based on their service, bravery, etc.
Medals are given for participation in battles, bravery, or contribution in special operations. For this reason, many soldiers in Pakistan have been awarded medals even after defeats. Additionally, medals are awarded not only for wars but also for internal operations, such as Pakistan's Operation Zarb-e-Azb. Medals and decorations are a tradition in every country's army.
Just as India has not fought any war for many years, yet medals related to peace time are being awarded to soldiers by the army, a similar situation exists in Pakistan. The Pakistani army has awarded its soldiers for the battles of 1948, 1965, and 1971, as well as for the 1970 operations in Balochistan, the Siachen dispute, Shiite insurgency, and internal affairs.
Pakistan's highest military bravery award is the Nishan-e-Haider. This medal is awarded only to members of the Pakistan Armed Forces. It recognizes the highest acts of extraordinary bravery. Following this are the Hilal-e-Jurat, Sitara-e-Jurat, Tamgha-e-Jurat, and Imtiazi Sanad. Non-operational awards include Sitara-e-Bisat, Tamgha-e-Bisat, Tamgha-e-Khidmat Class-1, Tamgha-e-Khidmat Class-2, and Tamgha-e-Khidmat Class-3. Civil-military awards include Nishan-e-Imtiaz, Hilal-e-Imtiaz, Sitara-e-Imtiaz, Tamgha-e-Imtiaz, and Tamgha-e-Khidmat.

At ministerial roundtable, India, Singapore agree to expand cooperation in key areas

NEW DELHI: India and Singapore on Wednesday reviewed bilateral cooperation in key areas such as connectivity, digitalisation, healthcare and skilling and identified new initiatives for collaboration. The 3rd India Singapore Ministerial Roundtable (ISMR) was held in New Delhi on Wednesday. (@DrSJaishankar X) These matters were discussed at the third meeting of the India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable (ISMR), a special mechanism created in 2022 to advance cooperation in crucial sectors such as technology, investments and advanced manufacturing. The two sides reviewed the progress on cooperation under the six pillars of ISMR - advanced manufacturing, connectivity, digitalisation, healthcare and medicine, skills development and sustainability. The two sides also 'deliberated on ways to further deepen bilateral cooperation, particularly under these six pillars, and identified a number of specific initiatives to pursue,' the external affairs ministry said in a readout. The Indian delegation included finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, external affairs minister S Jaishankar, commerce minister Piyush Goyal, and electronics and information technology minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The Singapore team included deputy prime minister Gan Kim Yong, coordinating minister for national security K Shanmugam, foreign minister Vivian Balakrishnan, digital development minister Josephine Teo, manpower minister Tan See Leng and acting transport minister Jeffrey Siow. The ministers from Singapore also met President Droupadi Murmu. People familiar with the matter said about 10 agreements covering topics under the six pillars of the ISMR were finalised during the meeting. These agreements are expected to be unveiled during a meeting between the prime ministers of the two countries next month. Deputy prime minister Gan, who is also Singapore's trade minister, visited Mumbai on Tuesday to take stock of investments by Singapore companies – PSA's Bharat Mumbai Container Terminal (PSA Mumbai) Phase 2 and CapitaLand Investment's (CLI) new data centre in Navi Mumbai. These investments underscore Singapore's confidence in India's long-term economic trajectory, officials said. Gan and Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis toured the port facilities and received a briefing from PSA on how the development of Phase 2 will enhance India's trade and maritime connectivity. Gan also witnessed the signing of an MoU between Mapletree Investments and the Maharashtra government to commit foreign direct investments equivalent to ₹3,000 crores in Maharashtra through the development of industrial parks, logistics parks and data centres. Gan inaugurated CLI's new data centre in Navi Mumbai, for which the firm is investing $453 million. The external affairs ministry said India views Singapore as an important partner in 'Act East' policy. Ties between the two sides were elevated to a comprehensive strategic partnership in September 2024.

India-Russia-China consultation to intensify: Jaishankar to visit Moscow, Wang Yi to visit New Delhi

Against the backdrop of growing uncertainty in trade ties with the United States, India is on track to intensify engagements with Russia and China in the coming days. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is scheduled to visit Russia on August 21 to hold discussion with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov as officials here are preparing to host Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi before that, sources here have confirmed. 'The Ministers will discuss key issues on our bilateral agenda, as well as key aspects of cooperation within international framework,' said the Russian Foreign Ministry announcing Mr Jaishankar's visit to Moscow. Mr Jaishankar's visit is part of the preparatory consultation for the next Russia-India annual summit for which President Vladimir Putin is expected to visit India later this year. The meeting between Mr Jaishankar and Mr Lavrov comes days after National Security Adviser Ajit Doval visited Russia where he met his counterpart Sergey Shoigu and had a special audience with President Putin. Soon thereafter, President Putin and Prime Minister Modi had a telephonic conversation on Friday that Mr Modi described as 'detailed'. India is yet to officially announce the visit of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi though sources indicated that it is being scheduled ahead of Mr Jaishankar's visit to Moscow. Sources said that the visit is understandably aimed at continuing high level discussion on the India-China border issue and Wang Yi will meet National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and others during his visit. The India-China interaction will be keenly watched as it is being planned three months after Operation Sindoor when India fought a brief war with Pakistan. Lt General Rahul R Singh, Deputy Chief of Army Staff said in July that China provided 'live inputs' to Pakistan during the conflict. It is understood that Wang Yi's interactions in Delhi will also be part of the preparatory meetings before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's expected visit to Tianjin, China for the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). However, India will remain cautious while warming up ties with Beijing because of China's strong relationship with Pakistan, sources have hinted. Russian official news agency, TASS has reported that before reaching New Delhi, Mr Lavrov will travel to Alaska with President Putin for the August 15 summit with U.S. President Trump that India has welcomed. In a statement, Official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs described the summit that comes after more than three years of Russia-Ukraine conflict, as a move that holds the 'promise' of ending the conflict. On August 11, Prime Modi held a telephone conversation with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and emphasised the need for a 'peaceful settlement' of the conflict. In the backdrop of President Donald Trump's imposition of tariffs on India for purchase of Russian oil, India has carried out a number of consultations with partners and stakeholders. Prime Minister Modi has spoken on phone with Brazil's President Lula Da Silva. On August 12, Mr Modi spoke with President Savkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan when the two leaders discussed connectivity and transit projects including the International North-South Corridor that aims to ease overland transport to Russia.
