Black Cats out to complete season's purpose
Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris says the team are determined to complete the "purpose" they set out last summer and win promotion. They face Sheffield United in the Championship play-off final at Wembley on Saturday (15:01 BST) with Premier League football the prize for the winners.Le Bris arrived at the Stadium of Light last June to take over a team who had finished 16th the previous stadium, but one which set a lofty goal."We are exactly where we wanted to be at the start of the season," he said. "When we first met with the players, I asked them 'what is the purpose of the season?' They told me they wanted to get promoted. Here we are and we have this opportunity."
Few had Sunderland down as one of the teams likely to mount a promotion challenge, but they have not been lower than fourth all season. And Le Bris said that watching some of their matches from last season showed that, with a bit of tinkering, the raw materials of success were in place."For me it was not a surprise but for a team that finished 16th, maybe the step could have been a bit high," he said."When I analysed different games, it was really obvious that this team was able to play really good football but had a lack of consistency."For me, it was possible to improve the consistency through the methodology, through the work we can have during the season."The weakness was identified and then it was a question of work and different improvements during the season."Of Sunderland's starting XI in the two legs of their play-off semi-final success over Coventry City, Luke O'Nien was the only player aged over 30 and Patrick Roberts the only other past 25.So with such a big occasion in prospect at Wembley, there could be nerves in their young team. But Le Bris does not expect them to be overawed with the Premier League in touching distance. "It's not always a question of age, it's a question of connection with the path," he said. "You can be 17 and you can be ready for this fixture. Or you can be 30, and probably have problems managing your emotions. "The players seem mature for this event."

'Kudos to Martin for backing himself to win over support'
After four months of searching, and numerous candidates in the mix from Steven Gerrard to Davide Ancelotti, we finally have our head coach to kickstart the new era for the responsibility has been given to Russell Martin, that's right - don't squint your eyes or think this is a typo - it's actually him. Frankly, as always, I hope it works and he is successful but it appears he's the one that almost no one the online reaction, you have to give him some kudos for taking the job and backing himself to win over the trust of the thing that irked me with regard to Philippe Clement's style of football was the lack of control - it was all very will be the polar opposite. What I hope for is that he can come in and keep the positive parts of his play - the high press and high tempo - and tighten up the I always feel the sign of a good manager is someone who can improve players already at a club when you arrive. If he can get a right few of them to take their games to the next level such as Mo Diomande, Nico Raskin and Hamza Igamane, I'd be delighted with that as a starting from Martin at his first media conference today will be interesting, particularly his thoughts on the fan noise and more importantly, how he wants to move this team forward and try and win games of sporting director Kevin Thelwell and new technical director Dan Purdy must give him the tools to succeed by adding to the players mentioned above, if they remain at the club beyond the summer. It's a tough job ahead, and the recruitment has to be spot on all across the squad to get players that fit the Martin's currently have a mishmash of players who lack direction. Hopefully with a new manager and new players coming in things will become more cohesive on the pitch.I'm intrigued where this will go, what calibre of player we can attract and how Martin's philosophy will work both domestically and in be honest, going into next season, fan opinion, possession stats and philosophies won't really matter. It's silverware that counts and if you wanted Martin or were a bit dubious, like myself, you just hope he comes in and delivers.

Horse racing tips: Thursday, June 5
Ron Wood continues to show a healthy profit from his horse racing selections and he has two more runners picked out today, including a NAP in the all-weather meeting at Lingfield. Ron Wood's selections: Odds provided by William Hill and correct at the time of writing. Stars denote strength of selection (max 5). If you already have a William Hill account and are looking for a new bookmaker to use for this week's racing, check out more free bets from the best betting sites, reviewed by our experts. 3.50 Lingfield – Class 4 Handicap (1m) There's still better to come from Andrew Balding's GALLANT (NAP), who defeated seven subsequent winners when taking a novice event on the all-weather at Kempton last year. The runner-up that day was West Acre, who has since won two Group races in Dubai. Gallant hasn't progressed but he didn't have the race run to suit – or handle the track – over 6f at Newmarket two outings ago, while most recently he got no sort of run at York (7f, good to firm). The selection now drops in class and steps up in trip as well, but the Lingfield all-weather circuit is not demanding and he should still prove better than his current mark. Selection: Gallant @ 11/10 with William Hill 3.42 Hamilton – Class 2 Handicap (6f) This is a decent sprint handicap and VANTHEMAN could be the answer. He is usually campaigned at 5f these days, but he has won over today's trip and showed up well in a 6f Newmarket handicap on his reappearance. He was well beaten at York most recently, but he used up gas in mid-race after losing ground at the start and shaped better than the bare result suggests. This is less competitive than those recent contests, albeit it's still the same class, and he is weighted to go well. Selection: Vantheman @ 7/2 with William Hill Ron Wood 2025 horse racing P/L Star ratings explained ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - confident selection ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - strong fancy ⭐⭐⭐ - fair claims ⭐⭐ - tentative choice ⭐ - minimum confidence If you want to find more odds and offers, take a look at our list of the best betting sites and free bets If you're looking for casino bonuses, we've ranked UK welcome offers here

Newcastle confirm first summer signing after pipping Barcelona, Real Madrid and Porto to Spanish wonderkid
NEWCASTLE have confirmed the signing of Spanish wonderkid Antonio Cordero. SunSport revealed in January that the 18-year-old - dubbed 'Antoñito' - would reject a new deal at Malaga in favour of joining the Magpies on a free transfer. 2 The Spaniard will arrive at St James' Park on 1st July - subject to obtaining a UK visa - upon the expiry of his contract, and is expected to spend his first season out on loan. Real Madrid and Barcelona had held talks with the attacker, as did Porto, but he opted to pen a five-year deal to join Eddie Howe 's side. Cordero said: "It's truly an honour to be here, truly a pleasure. I am a person who likes to aspire high. Why not come to one of the best places in the world to do it. 'It's a big step, and that's one of the reasons I'm here. I'm happy to do it and have a great desire to get going already.' Strong reports from Cordero's homeland suggest he could make a return to Malaga next season, though boss Sergio Pellicer refused to be drawn on the situation when asked recently. He said: "From the outside, it seems easy, but then it requires certain circumstances to make sense of everything - salary caps and other issues. It's up to the club to talk about it." Cordero scored his first senior goal for the Andalusian giants in June 2024, bagging a last-gasp equaliser in a play-off final second leg to fire Malaga back in to the Segunda Division. Upon confirmation of the signing, Newcastle sporting director Paul Mitchell said: "Antonio is an exciting talent. We're delighted to bring him to Newcastle United amidst interest in Spain and across Europe. 'He has lots of potential, and the next phase of his development will be for the club to select a loan move that will challenge him and build on his experiences.' Cordero's arrival is set to be the first among a flurry of summer signings. Champions League places CONFIRMED after Aston Villa VAR controversy as Newcastle have to be saved by Man Utd Eddie Howe maintains an interest in Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi, but hopes of signing Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford have been hampered by his desire to join Man Utd.
