Almost half of all pet owners have cancelled a holiday to stay with their animals, new figures have shown.
Four out of ten have declined the chance to take a trip away, purely due to the fear of leaving their pets at home, according to a study by Virgin Media O2 (VMO2).
Meanwhile, a whopping 63 per cent of pet owners confessed they do not like to leave furry friends behind to make a foreign getaway, the merged mobile and broadband company showed.
For Brits who do choose to take some time out, pets are what they miss most while away - more than even family, as per the research commissioned from Censuswide.
And the yearning for their furry friends from afar sees nearly half (48 per cent) of pet owners video call their pets while on holiday, with a fifth checking an animal cam.
In fact, almost a third of Brits spend as much as half an hour to an hour per day on the phone to their pets back home, using up valuable time away.
For pet owners who find absence makes the heart grow fonder, dog trainer Rob Alleyne offered some advice - and it was not to call so often, or perhaps even at all.
The founder of Canine Instructor Academy explained: 'Although it may make you feel better to call five times a day, for some dogs, it feels like you abandon them again every time you end the call, so they can become unsettled.
'Check your indoor camera and see how your dog is coping after each call.
'If they're being left with someone who is holding the phone, they can, of course, let you know how the dog reacts post-call.'
It may even be better to put aside your yearning entirely - and not call at all: 'Some dogs may find it confusing to hear their owner's voice but not be able to find them...
'If they seem a bit out of sorts [after the call], perhaps video calling is not for them.'
Pet owners explained the reasons why they call their animals while abroad - from easing their own homesickness, to believing their pets recognise their voice.
But they should be aware it is not just our four-legged friends who might find themselves feeling bad after a call from a place in the sun.
With as many as a third of us being served unexpected roaming charges after a trip abroad, costing on average more than £90 per trip, needy pet owners could be in financial hot water.
They may be running up massive phone bills - perhaps just to keep in touch with their pooch.
Gen Z pet parents should watch out for this the most - they are the neediest of all animal owners, with 70 per cent of them admitting to calling their pets while away.
An enormous 61 per cent of Gen Z animal owners also confessed speaking to their pets while on holiday helps them feel less homesick.
For those who do choose to FaceTime their pets, Mr Alleyne said like anything, preparation is key to managing any adverse reactions from your furry friend.
He said: 'Familiarise your pet with a particular piece of music or a favourite song for a few weeks before you leave them for longer periods, particularly playing it at times when the dog is relaxed, chewing or resting.
'Have it playing in the background when you call. This can help to manage your dog's excitement or confusion levels during your call.'
Mr Alleyne also had some suggestions as to how to make the most out of any time spent on the phone to our four-legged friends.
He reminded animal lovers as much as we like to think our pets understand everything we say, it is sadly not the truth.
Tone of voice and a couple of meaningful words or phrases are more important: 'Excitable, high-pitched voices will arouse the dog, increasing the likelihood of them becoming anxious and frustrated when you hang up.
'Instead, adopt a calm, soothing tone to help keep your pet calm.
'Spend some time creating words and phrases that will mean something to your pet when they hear them.'
An O2 spokesperson said: 'We know how important it is to keep connected whilst on holiday, which is why O2 is the only major UK network to offer inclusive EU roaming as standard to 49 European destinations.
'Our new research shows that it's not just friends and family that we want to stay in touch with, but our pets too.
'With more reasons to call home than ever before, it's even more important that your mobile provider has your back while you're abroad and that you check your tariff before travelling.'

Determined to avoid baggage fees for his holiday to Pisa, Benjamin Till trawled several different shops armed with a tape measure in search of the right suitcase. Eventually, he found a case within the dimensions EasyJet allows for a free underseat bag - or so he thought. When Mr Till arrived at London Gatwick Airport in December 2023, he discovered those measurements included wheels, meaning his bag was deemed slightly too protested, but eventually paid £48 to bring the bag on board. He says he was told to remove the wheels for the way back - which he at the gate on his way home, he was told the suitcase was still too large, so he sat on the floor, unpacking his dirty underwear and souvenirs into a bin bag."I don't mind admitting that I actually burst into tears because it was so humiliating," he says. An EasyJet spokesperson told the BBC its ground crew had to ensure non-checked bags were within maximum dimensions "to safely and securely fit", and that rules were made clear to customers when they booked. Stories of passengers caught out by baggage rules they feel are inconsistent or confusing are common, with many customers complaining or seeking clarity from budget airlines on social media. Different airlines have varying rules on the acceptable size and weight of an underseat personal item or an overhead cabin bag, with some charging customers to bring the latter. Regarding charges for overheard cabin bags, Ryanair said it fully complied with EU law in its policy, which allows one small bag on board free of charge."If airlines were forced to include additional carry-on bags as part of the basic fare, it would reduce choice and drive up air fares for all passengers, which would harm consumers," the airline group Airlines For Europe said charging different amounts depending on baggage "allows passengers to choose the exact services that best suits their needs". What do customers want? Hand luggage dimensions should be universal, says Jane Hawkes, a consumer expert specialising in travel."I don't really see why it can't be, and why they can't come to a voluntary agreement as to what those requirements should be for your baggage," she tells the BBC."There have to be restrictions, obviously, but a one-size-fits-all kind of approach would make it a lot simpler for passengers," she said policymakers should define what "reasonable" size and weight was "to avoid surprises at the airport and ultimately reduce the number of disputes costing consumers and airlines time and money".Ms Hawkes suggests passengers make sure they measure their bag after it is packed, as it may expand when it is full and go over the limit. She adds that consumers should not just be swayed by the fare price, as "if you've got an airline that encompasses [baggage] without you having to pay extra costs to start with, then that might be more of a better option for you". Mr Till would welcome a one-size-fits-all approach to underseat bags. "It's just really, really unfair and ridiculous and there should be one size that goes across all of the airlines," he also criticises the permitted size of underseat cabin bags, saying "it was such a tiny, tiny size of luggage that you were allowed that it had taken me so long to find something that was so small".Still, he was grateful for the inexpensive air fare, and the place he had to stay in Italy, because "otherwise I wouldn't be able to come to this beautiful country".

PEOPLE don't seem to just like East Ruston Cottages – or ERC as its veteran guests refer to it for short. They love it. Really love it. The one thing uniting them all? Dogs. Every one of them is a pet owner. 2 2 And like dogs with a bone, they can't seem to let go of this agency for dog-friendly cottages in coastal and rural Norfolk. They don't just come once. Or twice. Some have booked upward of 30 times over the last decade. So, what makes these cottages so special? Well, after I check in for a few days at the four-person Farthing Cottage, in the village of Trunch, between the coast and Norfolk Broads, it's easy to see. The semi-detached, flint-stone cottage, set back from a quiet residential road, is a delight. Beer festival There are paw-print stickers padding across the patio doors inviting my Manchester Terrier, Arty, out into the fully enclosed garden. There's also a welcome hamper with treats for humans as well as a mini-hamper for the dog, with Norfolk -made dog treats, a collapsible bowl, a clip-on light for visibility in the dark and a poo-bag holder. The shelf in the hallway has a tin of dog treats and a jar full of dog tags with the cottage address on one side and a 'I'm on holiday' notice on the other. And on the hooks by the front door, there's even a bag with 'I need space' lead labels to borrow from Yellow Dog UK, made for anxious or reactive dogs that don't want to be approached by others when roaming the local footpaths. The owners, it seems, really have thought of everything, and to my delight they've not left a list of rules my dog must follow. We spend our days roaming on the local dog-friendly beaches at Mundesley and Trimingham, and evenings curled up on the sofas with the fire blazing. Inside luxury dog-friendly glamping pod with wild Scottish spa and its own fairy pools The local social club (also dog-friendly) has a beer festival on, so I drink local ales and listen to live music before retiring to the cottage, where Arty is allowed to snooze on the bed with me, just as he does at home. If you are stuck for things to do in the local area, this can be quickly remedied with a visit to the ERC Facebook page. Regular visitors lurk on the company's Facebook group, which has a bewildering 6,000 members, ready to pounce with recommendations of nearby pubs, beaches or fish and chip shops. After years of staying at dog-friendly accommodation and writing dog-friendly guidebooks, few places can match up to the efforts made by East Ruston Cottages. I'm no longer surprised by the fact that the company's most popular properties, such as The Lookout which has a sea view, are booked right through until 2026 in some cases. And while I'm not about to join the congregation of impassioned Facebook followers, I will no doubt be returning for more.
