ESPN reporter Holly Rowe shares possible timeline for Caitlin Clark return from injury

USA Today6 days ago
During the nationally broadcast 93-78 Indiana Fever win over the Chicago Sky from the United Center on Sunday afternoon, ESPN reporter Holly Rowe provided a more in-depth update on Caitlin Clark's injury and when the former Hawkeye could be expected to return to action.
Clark, who has remained out since July 15 after suffering a right groin injury against the Connecticut Sun, remains a constant presence on the bench for the Fever as the team plays without its franchise cornerstone.
'[Clark] did see a specialist last week, and no additional injury was found in that exam and scans. Stephanie White did tell us that they will be even more cautious in their approach to her return to play this time.
'Last time when she came back from injury, she didn't get any practice time [or] any time to ramp up her conditioning. This time, they're going to make sure she has time and practice to get rhythm and time with her teammates," Rowe said.
Sunday's game marked the fourth consecutive game Clark has missed due to the right groin ailment. In total, Clark has now been absent for 13 regular season games with three different injury setbacks.
Rowe finished her report on Clark by pointing to the Fever's schedule, which features a five-day break around the third week of August, between Indiana's Aug. 17 road game against the Connecticut Sun and their Aug. 22 home game against the Minnesota Lynx.
While admitting that Clark remains "day-to-day" according to the team, Rowe alluded to the specific window between games as an ideal timetable for a potential return, given the star guard's ability to secure a few more days of practice during that period.
As you look at their schedule, the third week in August provides a few more practice days where that seems like it's realistic. While she does remain day-to-day, that seems like a better timetable for a possible Caitlin Clark return," Rowe said.
As for the immediate future, Indiana (14-12) will look to continue their confident play when the team returns home to Gainbridge Fieldhouse for a matchup against former teammate DeWanna Bonner and the Phoenix Mercury (16-9) on Wednesday, July 30.
The game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. CT and will air on ESPN3.

Former Texas A&M outfielder Braden Montgomery is making noise in AA with Birmingham Barons

Former Texas A&M outfielder Braden Montgomery experienced a shaky start in Double-A ball after being promoted from the Winston-Salem Dash to the Birmingham Barons, but he's beginning to find his stride. Over the last two games, Montgomery has flashed the tools that earned him the call-up, quieting doubts and reigniting excitement around his development. August is still in its early days, yet Montgomery has posted an impressive .500 on-base percentage (OBP) and a 1.250 slugging percentage (SLG), signaling a red-hot beginning in Double-A. While the organization expects him to remain at this level for the rest of the season, there's growing optimism that he could make his major league debut as early as next year. The start wasn't easy. After going 2-for-13 with nine strikeouts in his first three games, Montgomery looked overmatched. But in his last two outings, he's turned a corner, going 3-for-8 with his first home run at this level. Though strikeouts remain a concern and could slow his path to the majors, his high ceiling and raw talent still mark him as one of the club's top prospects. Below are a few early clips from his stint with the Barons. Fans and city leaders hope WNBA approves sale to move the Sun to Boston

Big news broke Saturday when reports said the minority owner of the Celtics reached a deal to buy the Connecticut Sun and move them to Boston. The group led by Steve Pagliuca bid a record $325 million for the WNBA franchise, with plans to move them to Massachusetts. Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey wants this deal to be approved. 'Boston is the perfect place for a WNBA team. We are the hub of New England and the birthplace of basketball. We have an incredible sports culture and strong enthusiasm for women's sports, as evidenced by the Sun selling out TD Garden two years in a row. This would be a great opportunity for our state, for the League and for the players.' Governor Maura Healey Boston 25 spoke with fans outside of TD Garden Saturday night and they were excited at the thought of a women's basketball team coming to the city. 'I think it's crazy I think Boston should have been one of the first cities to get one,' Joseph Willingham said. 'It's insane.' Basketball fans have been waiting years for this and are pumped to hear it could finally be happening soon. 'Any women's team coming to the city is really exciting I definitely support them,' Allen Martin said. Boston City Councilor Brian Worrell is pushing for people to call on the WNBA to add a team to Boston. He's hoping and expecting this deal to go through. 'We heard from many, many fans here in Boston that want the 'W' here in the city,' Worrell said. 'We have the best fan base in the country so I wouldn't see why the WNBA would not approve this.' The sale is pending approval of the league and its Board of Governors. The franchise wouldn't play in Boston until the 2027 season at the earliest. 'I hope the league hears us loud and clear; we have a record deal,' Worrell said. 'Let's get this deal done, and hopefully the sun will rise in Boston.' This is a developing story.
