Nets sign former college hoops star Drew Timme to deal
While the season is nearly over for the Nets, their final nine games on the schedule will serve as a well-earned showcase for a recent college basketball sensation.
The team announced a contract with former Gonzaga star Drew Timme on Friday, in a move that can be aptly labeled as a promotion. The 24-year-old center had been thriving in the G League as a member of the Long Island Nets, and his efforts didn't go unnoticed.
Earlier this week, Timme was named G League Player of the Week, after dropping a career-high 50 points in a win last Saturday and a league-best 107 points total across three contests. In 29 G League games this season, he's averaged 23.9 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 4.1 assists with 18 doubles-doubles.

Timme, assuming the 15th and final roster spot in Brooklyn, is remembered for his run of college success with Gonzaga (2019-2023). He was a three-time All-American, who led the Bulldogs to three Sweet 16 apperances and one national title game. He also received WCC Player of the Year honors twice and left the program as its all-time leading scorer.
The college-level dominance didn't captivate enough NBA scouts, however. Timme went undrafted in 2023, and ultimately signed with the Milwaukee Bucks and joined their G League affiliate. After suffering a broken foot in February 2024, he joined the Sacramento Kings' affiliate and eventually landed with the Nets via trade in late December.

"I've heard there's some teams that really like him and there are some teams that feel like they would probably have to move up to get him," NBA Draft expert Rafael Barlowe said of Oklahoma guard Jeremiah Fears during his appearance on Yahoo! Sports' "The Kevin O'Connor Show" that was published on Saturday. O'Conner mentioned that Barlowe wrote that Fears could be moving into the top-5 of the class, meaning that teams may have to trade up for him. "Brooklyn is a team that I've heard that that probably has some interest there," Barlowe continued. "I've also heard from scouts from other teams that say that their scouting staff believes that he could be a a better long-term prospect than Dylan Harper as far as just being like an exciting league guard and they talked about him being being younger and just what he did at Oklahoma was more impressive than what Dylan Harper did at at Rutgers." While Barlowe mentioned that the Nets are one of the teams that could have interest in Fears, it remains to be seen what that means in practice given that Brooklyn has the eighth overall pick. There have been reports throughout the offseason that suggest that Brooklyn could attempt to move up in the Draft, but if they are going to trade up to be in range of Fears, they would probably have to find their way into the top-5 based on Barlowe's intel. Brian Lewis of the New York Post recently said that it appears that the Dallas Mavericks (first overall pick), San Antonio Spurs (second), and Charlotte Hornets (fourth) are keeping their picks, but that the Philadelphia 76ers (third) and Utah Jazz (fifth) could be open for business for their picks. If the Nets are interested in Fears enough to trade for him, they will have to pull something off with the 76ers or the Jazz.

A major portion of North Carolina's success came from its veteran trio of Alyssa Ustby, Maria Gakdeng and Lexi Donarski, who played their final year of college basketball. The Tar Heels welcomed a few high school recruits to Chapel Hill, while lucking out in the transfer portal. One of UNC's greatest additions was sixth woman Lanie Grant, the 2024 Virginia Gatorade Player of the Year. Grant will likely be asked to step into a starting role during North Carolina's upcoming campaign, replacing Lexi Donarski as a starting guard. The Tar Heels will have a younger, new-look roster, with Grant poised to take on a leadership role in just Year Two.
