Starc remained unbeaten on 58 runs for Australia in the 2nd innings of the WTC 2025 final. During his stay at the crease, Starc faced 136 balls and hammered five fours.
Mitchell Starc came out to bat at No. 9 for Australia in the second innings of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final currently underway at Lord's against South Africa and scored 58 runs. During his stay at the crease, Starc faced 136 deliveries and hammered five fours. He added 59 runs for the 10th wicket with Josh Hazlewood to help the Aussies post a total of 207 runs in the second innings and set up a target of 282 for South Africa to chase down in the fourth innings of the match.
By scoring a half-century for Australia in the 2nd innings, Starc entered his name in the history books as he became the first No. 9 batter in the world to score a half-century in a knockout match of an ICC event across formats. Before Starc, the record of the highest score by a No. 9 batter or below in an ICC knockout match was in the name of South Africa's Rory Kleinveldt. Kleinveldt scored 43 runs from 61 balls for South Africa as the No. 10 batter in the first semifinal of the 2013 Champions Trophy at The Oval.
Starc's unbeaten 58-run knock also helped him break former West Indies wicketkeeper Courtney Browne's record of highest score by a No. 9 batter in ICC finals. During the 2004 Champions Trophy final between England and the West Indies at The Oval, Browne remained unbeaten on 35 runs from 55 balls for the Brian Lara-led side.
Starc, who is one of the best bowlers of all time, had earlier added 61 runs for the eighth wicket with Alex Carey (43 runs from 50 balls) to help Australia bounce back from 73/7 in 24.5 overs and post a challenging total for the Proteas.
The left-handed batter was caught behind by Alex Carey after making 6 runs from 8 balls off Starc's bowling. The incident took place on the first ball of the third over of South Africa's 2nd innings in the second session of the third day.

Virat Kohli's 7-year-old post for Aiden Markram goes viral after his WTC final century

Star India batter Virat Kohli's seven-year-old Tweet for South Africa batter Aiden Markram has been going viral on social media after the latter's magnificent hundred in the World Test Championship (WTC) final 2025 against Australia. Starc makes 58 as Oz set SA 282 for victory

Mitchell Starc made a vital 58, his first Test fifty since 2019, as Australia set South Africa a challenging target of 282 to win the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final after making 207 in 65 overs of their second innings on day three at Lord's. On a day where the sun shined bright and conditions eased out for batting, it meant Starc, who was dropped on 14 in the final over of day two's play, was at his resolute best to take the lead past 280, while sharing a 59-run last-wicket partnership with an equally solid Josh Hazlewood. For South Africa, who bowled 22 extras, including 10 no-balls, Kagiso Rabada picked 4-59 while Lungi Ngidi returned with figures of 3-38. Resuming day three from 144/8, Rabada struck by trapping Nathan Lyon lbw, with the ball tracking showing the ball would hit the top of the leg stump. Starc and Hazlewood were largely untroubled by South Africa's pacers, as they didn't get sideways movement. The duo getting four quick boundaries meant Australia's lead went past 250. Starc was the aggressor in the partnership while Hazlewood firmly held one end up as the duo put on the highest tenth-wicket stand in any men's ICC championship final. Starc then got his 11th Test fifty in the 64th over by flashing at one outside off-stump from Marco Jansen and went over the slip cordon to get a streaky boundary, which also brought up Australia's 200 as well, as South Africa's shoulders began to drop. South Africa's frustrating time on the field ended when Hazlewood punched off the back foot to a wide one from Aiden Markram and was caught by cover, as the tenth-wicket stand was worth a whopping 59 runs coming off batting out 22.2 overs, to give South Africa a daunting fourth innings total to chase. Brief scores: Australia 212 and 207 in 65 overs (Mitchell Starc 58, Alex Carey 43; Kagiso Rabada 4-59, Lungi Ngidi 3-38) lead South Africa 138 in 57.1 overs by 218 runs.
