Brandon Marsh delivers for Phillies in 11th, rookie Otto Kemp has 3 hits in 4-3 win over Cubs

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Brandon Marsh singled home the winning run in the 11th inning after the Philadelphia Phillies used two bunt hits to load the bases and beat the Chicago Cubs 4-3 on Monday night. Ian Happ tied it at 2 for the Cubs on a solo homer off reliever Matt Strahm in the eighth. Pete Crow-Armstrong hit an RBI double in the 11th off Carlos Hernández (1-0) for a 3-2 lead. J.T. Realmuto made it 3-all when he drove in the automatic runner with a single off Daniel Palencia (0-2). The Phillies then improbably got two straight bunt singles — the first from rookie third baseman and undrafted Division II prospect Otto Kemp, who had the third of his first three big league hits in the game. Bryson Stott — a late-inning replacement after he was benched amid a 2-for-24 slump — also bunted for a hit to set up the clutch swing from Marsh. The Phillies needed this one after they were swept in three games last weekend at Pittsburgh. Philadelphia was 1-9 over its past 10 games and fell from the top of the NL East standings. The 25-year-old Kemp bailed out the Phillies twice. Kemp, who played at Division II Point Loma Nazarene University, singled in the fifth for his first hit since he was promoted to the Phillies on Saturday. Kemp scurried to third on Cubs starter Matthew Boyd's errant pickoff attempt and scored on Weston Wilson's RBI single for a 2-1 lead. Key moment The Phillies scored only one run in the fourth to tie it at 1 after they had loaded the bases with no outs. Key stat Cubs manager Craig Counsell was ejected for the second straight game. After getting tossed Sunday at Detroit, Counsell was thrown out in the ninth inning for arguing that Kemp ran out of the baseline on an infield single. Up next The Cubs send RHP Colin Rea (4-2, 3.59 ERA) to the mound against Phillies RHP Mick Abel (1-0, 0.79) on Tuesday. ___ AP MLB:

Bryan Reynolds' bases-loaded triple leads Pirates to season-high 4th straight win, 10-3 over Marlins

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Bryan Reynolds hit a bases-loaded triple to cap a four-run third inning and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the skidding Miami Marlins 10-3 on Monday night for their season-high fourth straight win. Reynolds put the Pirates ahead 4-1 with a line drive to the gap in right-center field off Eury Perez (0-1), who was making his first major league start since Sept. 20, 2023, after recovering from Tommy John surgery. Reynolds' hit came after Andrew McCutchen had an RBI infield single. All nine Pirates had hits, and McCutchen and Adam Frazier paced a 15-hit attack with three apiece. Brett Sullivan had two RBIs in his Pirates debut after being called up Saturday from Triple-A Indianapolis. Perez lasted just three innings and gave up four runs and four hits. He had five strikeouts and two walks while throwing 70 pitches as the Marlins lost for the eighth time in their last nine games. Despite missing so much time, Perez is still the youngest pitcher in the major leagues at 22 years, 55 days. The Pirates broke the game open with a four-run sixth that included two throwing errors by the Marlins on Ke'Bryan Hayes' bunt single. That put Pittsburgh ahead 8-2. The Marlins' Otto Lopez hit a leadoff home run in the second inning, his sixth, to open the scoring. Miami lost for the eighth time in nine games. Pirates rookie starter Mike Burrows allowed two runs on four hits in 4 1/3 innings with six strikeouts and three walks. Caleb Ferguson (2-0) pitched two perfect innings. The start of the game was delayed 41 minutes because of the threat of inclement weather. Key moment Reynolds' triple gave the Pirates all the runs they would need. Key stat The Pirates are 20-8 against NL East teams at home since the start of last season. Up next Marlins RHP Sandy Alcantara (2-7, 7.89 ERA) faces Pirates RHP Mitch Keller (1-8, 4.13) on Tuesday night in the middle game of the series. ___ AP MLB:

College World Series field set: Hello Murray State! Racers crash 8-team field

The eight-team field for the 2025 College World Series is complete with Murray State beating Duke on Monday night to earn the final spot. The Racers are the fourth No. 4 seed to make it to Omaha since the NCAA Tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1999, joining Fresno State in 2008, Stony Brook in 2012 and Oral Roberts in 2023. Fresno State went on to win the national championship. Advertisement Murray State, out of the Missouri Valley Conference, joins a geographically diverse field that includes two teams from the SEC (Arkansas and LSU) and one each from the ACC (Louisville), Big 12 (Arizona), Big Ten (UCLA) and Sun Belt (Coastal Carolina) as well as one independent (Oregon State). Friday: Arizona vs. Coastal Carolina, 2 p.m. (ET); Louisville vs. Oregon State, 7 p.m. (ET) Saturday: UCLA vs. Murray State, 2 p.m. (ET); LSU vs. Arkansas, 7 p.m. (ET) Only three of the eight national seeds and five of the top 16 seeds overall advanced to the College World Series. That's down from five of eight and seven of 16 in last year's field. The national seeds to advance: No. 3 Arkansas, No. 6 LSU and No. 8 Oregon State. Other top-16 seeds to advance: No. 13 Coastal Carolina and No. 15 UCLA. Top seed Vanderbilt, No. 2 seed Texas and No. 7 seed Georgia each failed to get out of the Regional round, while No. 4 seed Auburn and No. 5 seed North Carolina lost in the Super Regionals. There will not be a repeat champion as Tennessee, the No. 14 seed, lost to Arkansas in the Super Regionals. The last repeat champ was South Carolina in 2010 and 2011. Also, there is a completely new field in 2025. None of the teams from the 2024 CWS are back in Omaha. 2025 will be the first time in the super regional era (since 1999) that no team that made it to the College World Series the year before will be back in Omaha — Aria Gerson (@aria_gerson) June 9, 2025 LSU is a slight betting favorite over Arkansas to win the CWS, but the pick here is Arkansas. The Hogs hit a few speed bumps late in the season — losing four of five series during one stretch — but this is the most complete team in the country. The lineup is balanced and powerful (seven players have at least 13 home runs), and the pitching staff is as deep and versatile as any in college baseball. Arkansas is making its 12th trip to the CWS but has yet to win a national title. That drought will end this season.
