Life imprisonment for man who raped foster sister, 13
The East London high court has sentenced a 42-year-old man to life imprisonment for twice raping his 13-year-old foster sister, which led to her falling pregnant.
The man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim, committed the crimes in Ncerha Village in November 2023 and January 2024.
'The teenage victim was abandoned by her mother when she was three years old, along with her twin siblings, who were a year younger than her,' National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Luxolo Tyali said on Monday.
The mother of the accused was appointed as a foster mother of the girl and her siblings.
'She does not know who her biological mother is and regarded the man who raped her as her older brother as she grew up in front of him in the same household.'
In June 2024, the girl complained of stomach pains and her foster mother took her to the nearest clinic.
'She was shocked when the nurse told her that the girl was five months pregnant. As she is a chubby person, the foster mother did not notice the change in her body. She was asked who the father is, and she said it's 'Ubhuti', referring to the son of her foster mother.'
After both rape incidents the man gave the young girl R10 and told her not to report it to anyone. As the result of the rape, she now has a six-month-old baby boy.
The accused pleaded guilty as the evidence of the state, together with the paternity results showed he was the father of the child.

Daughter sentenced to life after pleading guilty to murder of her father
The Polokwane High Court has sentenced Mologadi Magdeline Mehlape to life imprisonment after she pleaded guilty to the brutal murder of her father, Dr Malekutu Johannes Mehlape, in 2023. Dr Mehlape was circuit manager at the Limpopo education department Mehlape, 28, was convicted of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances. In addition to life imprisonment for murder, she was sentenced to 15 years for robbery. The sentences were ordered to run concurrently, National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi said on Wednesday. The trial of four other accused — Tshepo Gabriel Ranoto, 34, Hlologelo Klaas Mogotlane, 34, Mahlodi Melida Mathole, 34, and Michael Sello Molongoane, 42 — was separated from that of Mehlape on Wednesday. They face charges of conspiracy to commit murder, murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Their trial was postponed until June 20. 'The court heard that Mehlape, who is the daughter of the deceased, orchestrated the murder following claims made by a traditional healer, Mogotlane, who alleged that her father was responsible for her mother's death through the use of 'muti'. 'When attempts to retaliate using traditional means failed, Mehlape enlisted the help of various family members to hire a contract killer, agreeing to pay R200,000 for the murder.' On the night of the incident at her father's home in Mankweng Zone 1, outside Polokwane, on December 28 2023, the accused unlocked the gate and main door, granting the perpetrators access to the house. 'The deceased was ambushed in his bedroom while asleep, shot multiple times, and robbed of several valuables, including his cellphone.' In mitigation of sentence, Mehlape apologised to her family and said she was the primary caregiver of her21-month old daughter and had unresolved disputes with her father. However, state advocate Muneiwa Ratshibvumo argued that the guilty plea was motivated by overwhelming evidence rather than genuine remorse. She described the murder as 'gruesome and heartless,' urging the court to impose the prescribed minimum sentence. 'The NPA welcomes the conviction and life sentence, viewing it as a clear affirmation of the justice system's resolve to hold perpetrators of serious and violent crimes accountable.'

NPA concludes witness testimony in Chief Albert Luthuli inquest, proceedings postponed to October
Chief Albert Luthuli, whose 1967 death is under renewed scrutiny in a reopened inquest. The reopened inquest into the death of Nobel Peace Prize laureate and anti-apartheid leader Inkosi Albert John Mvumbi Luthuli has been postponed to October for closing arguments after the state concluded its list of witnesses. On Wednesday, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed that proceedings in the Pietermaritzburg High Court were adjourned to October 13 to 16, 2025. The NPA, represented by Advocates Ncedile Dunywa, Annah Chuene, Siyabonga Ngcobo and Xolani Msimango, led testimony from an extensive list of witnesses since the inquest resumed on April 14 this year. 'In this reopened inquest, the NPA led an array of witnesses, including South African Police (SAPS) members, Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) officials, scene reconstruction and simulation experts, forensic analysts, medical evidence, family members of Chief Luthuli, anti-apartheid activists, and friends of Chief Luthuli,' NPA Regional Spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara stated.

Project manager working on Sanral project kidnapped on Addo Road
A project manager working on the multimillion-rand Sanral project to upgrade the R335 between Motherwell and Addo has been kidnapped. The man, employed by one of the companies contracted by Sanral, was abducted on Wednesday morning. Police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana said the Swartkops police were notified of a kidnapping on Addo Road near Monument Crossing at about 10.30am. A case of kidnapping is being investigated. ' It is alleged that a 37-year-old male was busy on a construction site on Addo Road when a white Mercedes sedan stopped next to him. 'Two [men] got out and then forced him into the Mercedes and drove off with him. 'One of the [men] also took [the victim's] white Toyota Hilux bakkie, which was found abandoned again in Ikamvelihle a short while later. 'No ransom demands have been made yet,' Gantana said. Eastern Cape premier Oscar Mabuyane has previously spoken out about attacks on the construction project. During his state of the province address in 2024, he revealed that 'construction mafias' had threatened to stop the upgrade, demanding R450,000 a month in protection fees. The road is a vital citrus export route from the Sundays River Valley municipality to Nelson Mandela Bay's two ports. The project is divided in two, with the first phase cutting across wards 53, 54, 55, 56 and 23 in Motherwell. The second phase is from Addo to Ngqweba (formerly Kirkwood). A source close to the project said the assailants had visited the area for the second time in the space of a week. 'Last week Friday, the site manager for phase two of the project [had a gun pointed at him] by unknown people who came on site and made some demands. 'Since that incident, the site manager left and has not returned to work,' he said. 'And now today the project manager employed by the same company has been abducted. 'This has been an ongoing problem here in Motherwell. 'At one point last year people came and demanded a monthly protection fee of R450,000 which meant the project had to temporarily be stopped for safety reasons.' A second source said they were concerned for the kidnapped manager's safety and the repercussions this would have for the project. 'From what I heard, the guys came last week and shot in the air and on the road to scare people. 'The fear by residents and councillors is that the project might have to be closed because threats are not happening for the first time and people's lives are at risk. 'Even Mabuyane has spoken publicly about these threats on construction companies, but they don't seem to have stopped,' the insider said. The Herald
