IPL 2025: GT's top-two hopes fade after twin setbacks, CSK wrap up season in style

India Today25-05-2025

Gujarat Titans suffered a major blow to their hopes of securing a top-two finish in the IPL 2025 playoffs after a second consecutive loss, this time to Chennai Super Kings by 83 runs on May 25. While CSK ended their campaign at the bottom of the points table, their win in Ahmedabad wasn't without merit — it offered a glimpse into a youth-driven future and, more crucially, exposed several worrying cracks in GT's game just before the playoffs.advertisementIt was a forgettable outing for newly appointed India Test captain Shubman Gill, both with the bat and in terms of on-field leadership — especially in contrast to former India skipper MS Dhoni's tactical prowess. For Gill and Gujarat, the issues now go beyond back-to-back defeats against Lucknow Super Giants and CSK. With little time left to regroup, GT must quickly address their batting depth, bowling inconsistency, and decision-making under pressure before the playoffs stage begins.IPL 2025, GT vs CSK: Highlights
Chennai Super Kings finally brought out their aggressive best with the bat, notching their highest total of IPL 2025 — 230 for 5 — thanks to a fearless display led by 17-year-old Ayush Mhatre. The youngest-ever CSK player set the tone with a blistering 34 off 17 balls, including a stunning 28-run over against Arshad Khan that sparked a powerplay blitz. Devon Conway supported with a steady 52 off 35, finding rhythm in the middle overs to anchor the innings.advertisementUrvil Patel, another exciting youngster, carried forward the momentum with a fiery 19-ball 37, attacking both pace and spin with confidence. His 63-run stand with Conway helped CSK maintain their early charge. Gujarat Titans' bowling — once among the league's most reliable — continued to falter following their previous defeat to Lucknow Super Giants, with only Prasidh Krishna with his 2 for 22 spell holding his ground as the rest of the attack looked out of sorts.Dewald Brevis sealed the innings with a late onslaught, smashing a 23-ball 57 that featured the joint-second fastest fifty by a CSK player. His power-packed hitting helped CSK surge past 230 despite a quiet knock from Jadeja. In what may be their final outing this season, CSK's young guns offered a timely reminder that their future is already taking shape. Then came Gujarat's turn to bat, and trouble loomed from the very start. The spotlight was firmly on new India Test captain Shubman Gill as he walked to the crease, with the crowd's anticipation echoing the weight of expectations on the 25-year-old. However, Gill endured one of his rare failures this season, falling for just 13 — a blow that immediately put early pressure on the rest of the batting line-up.advertisementThat pressure only intensified when Jos Buttler, playing his final IPL 2025 match before returning to England for their white-ball series against West Indies, was dismissed for a mere 5. With two key top-order batters back in the pavilion, Gujarat's chase of 231 was left teetering. The burden of rebuilding and chasing the daunting total now fell squarely on the shoulders of Sai Sudharsan, the current Orange Cap holder, as the Titans looked for a lifeline in a rapidly slipping contest. While Rahul Tewatia and Shahrukh Khan showed late signs of resistance in Gujarat Titans' daunting 231-run chase, it was simply not their day. On the other hand, CSK's bowling unit dominated the proceedings in Ahmedabad, with Noor Ahmed leading the charge with 3 for 21, Anshul Kamboj impressing with 3 for 13, and the experienced Ravindra Jadeja delivering a tidy spell of 2 for 17.GT bowling faltering at business-endThe match exposed a serious concern for Gujarat Titans heading into the playoffs — their bowling unit appears to be losing steam at precisely the wrong time. Despite a late-season surge, GT's bowlers had the perfect opportunity to bounce back from their slip-up against Lucknow Super Giants, with CSK's inconsistent batting line-up offering a chance to reset. Instead, things unravelled further.advertisementOnly Prasidh Krishna continued to deliver, finishing with impressive figures of 2 for 22. In contrast, the rest of the pace attack looked flat and ineffective. Mohammed Siraj conceded 47 runs without a wicket, while Arshad Khan endured a torrid two-over spell, leaking 42 runs — largely due to aggressive hitting from young guns Ayush Mhatre and Urvil Patel. Gerald Coetzee, expected to shoulder overseas pace duties in the absence of Kagiso Rabada, who has returned for South Africa's WTC Final against Australia, also struggled, giving away 34 in three wicketless overs.Spin wasn't much better. The attack lacked structure and intent, partly due to questionable usage by skipper Shubman Gill. In-form Sai Kishore was under-bowled despite claiming the key wicket of Urvil Patel and conceding just 24 in two overs. Rashid Khan's dip in form is another growing worry — his 42-run outing in GT's final league match will concern the think tank. While part-timer Shahrukh Khan chipped in with the wicket of Shivam Dube, relying on such stopgap solutions won't work in high-pressure knockout matches. GT's bowling needs an urgent recovery.advertisementWhat is GT batting beyond top 3?GT have largely relied on their top three — skipper Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, and Jos Buttler — to anchor their batting efforts this season. But the big question remains: what happens when that trio fails? That very concern turned into a glaring issue during their clash against CSK on Sunday. Gill's early dismissal for 13, followed by Buttler's cheap exit for 5 in his final match before returning for national duty, left Sudharsan alone to shoulder the pressure in a steep 231-run chase. With the top order faltering, the rest of the batting lineup needed to step up — but they couldn't. Sherfane Rutherford, expected to deliver a power-packed performance, was dismissed for a duck, further exposing GT's middle-order vulnerability. Although Shahrukh Khan and Rashid Khan showed brief glimpses of intent, their efforts were cut short by CSK's spin duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Noor Ahmed, who applied the brakes just when GT looked to rebuild. As the playoffs approach, GT face a growing crisis. With Buttler now unavailable and no evident middle-order firepower, they must urgently find answers beyond their top three. Otherwise, they risk falling short when it matters most.advertisementIPL 2025 top-two race after GT lossWith GT's loss to CSK on Sunday, the playoff race has taken a dramatic turn. The winner of the Punjab Kings vs Mumbai Indians clash will now secure a spot in Qualifier 1. If Royal Challengers Bangalore beat Lucknow Super Giants, they will join the PBKS-MI winner in Q1. However, if RCB lose, Gujarat Titans will take that second spot.In case the PBKS vs MI match is washed out or ends in a no result, GT will automatically qualify for Q1. RCB can still make it if they beat LSG; otherwise, Punjab Kings will go through.Stay updated on IPL 2025 with India Today! Visitors flock Masula Beach Festival to experience a spectrum of fun

Minister for Mines, Geology and Excise Kollu Ravindra on Saturday said the government was keen on promoting Manginapudi beach in Machilipatnam as a premier tourist destination. Speaking at the ongoing Masula Beach Festival-2025, he said the visitors can engage in an array of activities designed to showcase the region's cultural and recreational significance. He said the event offered exciting adventure and sports activities like water sports and beach games such as beach volleyball, beach football, paragliding and heli-riding. Celebrating a rich cultural tapestry and culinary expedition, a series of cultural programmes are planned to keep the crowds entertained and a diverse range of food items from across the country have come under one roof, he said. Sharing his personal experience, the Minister said the beach appeared even more magnificent when paragliding. He, along with Andhra Pradesh Sports Authority chairman A. Ravi Naidu and A.P. State Road Transport Corporation chairman Konakalla Narayana Rao, visited the place and monitored the smooth conduct of events. Later, at the kayaking event, he congratulated Arjuna awardee and kayaking coach Jayant Kumar and distributed jerseys to the kayaking participants. He said kayaking would be an annual event on the beach, and very soon, national and international competitions would also be organised at this place. Mr. Ravi Naidu said organising regular sports events on the beach will enhance the reputation of the historically significant beach and groom local sports talent into national and international athletes. RTC chairman Narayana Rao said free bus services were available from Machilipatnam to Manginapudi beach and encouraged people to utilise this facility to become part of a joyful experience at the beach festival. On the inaugural day, Minister Tourism Kandula Durgesh said active efforts were being made to secure more funds from the Centre to initiate new tourism projects for the State and make it a tourist hub. Special Chief Secretary, Department of Tourism Ajay Jain, Krishna district Collector D.K. Balaji and others were present at the inaugural. The four-day festival, which started on June 5, is drawing large crowds, and elaborate arrangements have been made for their safety. A combination of water sports like kayaking, parasailing and speed boat rides, along with cultural programmes and other activities, has significantly enhanced the excitement quotient in the vicinity. These attractions provide a variety of experiences, appealing to both adventure seekers and those interested in cultural events.

Indias Likely Playing XI For 1st Test Against England: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul As Openers, This Batter To Replace Virat Kohli At No. 4

photoDetails english 2912636 The Indian cricket team will start a new era in Tests with a five-match series against England. With Shubman Gill as the new Test captain and Rishabh Pant as vice-captain, India are all set to enter the transition phase after the retirements of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin. The first Test between India and England is set to be played from June 20 at Headingley, Leeds and the Shubman Gill-led side is expected to field a balanced playing XI, leveraging English conditions. Here's India's likely Playing XI for the 1st Test against England: Updated:Jun 07, 2025, 11:06 PM IST 1. Yashasvi Jaiswal 1 / 11 Young left-handed batter Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has been very consistent in the recent past, is all set to open the innings for India in the first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds. 2. KL Rahul 2 / 11 KL Rahul, who brings that much-needed experience, is likely to open the innings for India alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal in first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds. Rahul did well for India as opener during the last tour of England. 3. Karun Nair 3 / 11 India have two good options in Sai Sudharsan or Karun Nair, who could bat at No. 3 in the first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds. Both Sudharsan and Nair are technically sound and going through good form as well. The 33-year-old Nair recently hit a double hundred while playing for India A against England Lions in a four-day practice game in Canterbury. His impressive performance in the practice game might give him a preference over Sudharsan in the Indian playing XI for the first Test. 4. Shubman Gill (Captain) 4 / 11 Shubman Gill will lead India in the first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds. The 25-year-old Gill has mostly batted at the top of the order or at number three in his Test career so far but he could take the big responsibility of replacing Virat Kohli at No. 4 spot in the Indian cricket team. Gill might bat at No. 4 spot for India in the first Test against England. Him moving to No. 4 spot could be a game changer moment for Gill and might elevate his Test career. 5. Rishabh Pant (VC & WK) 5 / 11 Explosive middle-order batter and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant is all set to bat at No. 5 for India in the first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds. Pant has been one of the best batters for India in Test cricket in the last few years and the team would be expecting some counterattacking knocks from him during the tour. 6. Ravindra Jadeja 6 / 11 Ravindra Jadeja will give that perfect balance to the Indian team with his all-round skills during the upcoming England tour. He is likely to bat at No. 6 for India in the first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds. 7. Nitish Kumar Reddy 7 / 11 Nitish Kumar Reddy, the young all-rounder will offer batting depth and pace bowling options to the Indian team during the upcoming England tour. Nitish is likely to bat at No. 7 for India in the first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds and bowl some crucial overs as well. 8. Shardul Thakur 8 / 11 All-rounder Shardul Thakur has done well for England in Test cricket in the past. Once again, he is going to play a crucial role for India and his performance with both bat and ball can determine the fate of India in the first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds. 9. Jasprit Bumrah 9 / 11 Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah will lead the Indian bowling lineup in the first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds. A fully-fit Bumrah will be a lethal weapon for India against England. 10. Mohammed Siraj 10 / 11 India would expect a lot from Mohammed Siraj in their first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds. Siraj, who has enough experience now, is expected to lead the attack alongside Bumrah in English conditions. 11. Prasidh Krishna 11 / 11 India have plenty of options in Prasidh Krishna, Arshdeep Singh and Akashdeep, when it comes to picking their third pacer for the first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds. Prasidh Krishna's brilliant performance in the Sydney Test against Australia earlier this might help him in getting that preference over Arshdeep Singh and Akashdeep.

IND vs ENG: Not KL Rahul! This star batter may open with Yashasvi Jaiswal in England Tour as Australian legend says...

In this collection of pictures we shall know the star batter who might open with Yashasvi Jaiswal in England Tour. Interestingly, it's not KL Rahul. Let's dive in. KL Rahul has staked his claim to be the opener in the Test series against England by scoring a century while opening the innings against England Lions. He opened the innings for India-A in the second unofficial Test match against England Lions and scored 116 runs in the first innings. However, a 23-year-old explosive batsman is also in the race to become Yashasvi Jaiswal's partner. This batsman showed with his stormy batting in the recently concluded IPL 2025 that he is adept at opening the threads of the ball. Former Australian captain and great batsman Ricky Ponting has also supported this young batsman to become Yashasvi's opening partner. The Indian cricket team will take the field in the first Test of the five-match Test series against England on June 20. This is going to be a new phase for the Indian team under the leadership of new Test captain Shubman Gill. After the retirement of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, there are going to be many big changes in the batting unit, in which many young faces will also be seen. However, after Rohit's retirement, the opening spot is a big question as to who will open with Yashasvi Jaiswal. Veteran batsman KL Rahul opened in four out of five Tests in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, in which runs also came from his bat. In such a situation, it is being speculated that now after Rohit Sharma's retirement, the management can field him as an opener. However, former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has chosen Sai Sudharsan for this role. Ponting said that this is the right time to give this 23-year-old a chance to debut in the longest format. He believes that Rahul's experience will help the team in the middle order. Let us tell you that Sai Sudharsan has not made his Test debut for India. However, he has made his debut for India's white ball team. In IPL 2025, this explosive batsman scored a lot of runs and won the Orange Cap with 759 runs. Speaking to the Indian Express, Ponting said, "I said this because if they go with (Yashasvi) Jaiswal and if Sai Sudharsan is the second opener, then they need another experienced player at number three. So KL can be at three or Karun Nair can be at three and Shubman can be at four... once you are set in this, you can take yourself back to number three." The veteran further said, "I think it is the right time for Sudharsan to come into the team, honestly. Now there are going to be some changes in the Indian team, obviously with Rohit and Virat not being there. Every team goes through this phase... I think Sudharsan is ready."
