‘He's just different': KU freshman Darryn Peterson already has teammate's attention
Kansas freshman Darryn Peterson hasn't been in Lawrence long, but he's already had a memorable first practice.
His current favorite teammate is newcomer and Loyola-Chicago transfer Jayden Dawson.
'Me and Jayden Dawson were killing it yesterday in the three-on-three and four-on-four,' Peterson said.

The former five-star recruit, nicknamed 'Bucket Jones' by his father, Darryl, has already made quite an impression on his teammates and coach Bill Self.
Self called Peterson a 'generational talent' Monday. Dawson didn't quite say that, but the word generational was also thrown around.
'He's just different,' Dawson told The Star about Peterson. 'He's just one of those generational athletes that you don't really come across. It's just special. You can just see it based on his talent alone. This summer alone, he's going to grow so much. Just the talent alone — not too many players you can see that's as good as him.'
Dawson has NBA dreams; it's one of the reasons why he picked the Jayhawks. Peterson will certainly command plenty of NBA attention as a contender for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.

'DP being the projected number one pick, that's just going to put eyes on me,' Dawson said. 'Bringing NBA scouts and NBA GMs every day for practices and games is exactly what I need for me to get where I want to get to.'
That synergy between Dawson and Peterson will be pivotal for the Jayhawks. Dawson is the only player currently on KU's roster who shot above 35% from 3 last season. He averaged 13.9 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists a game last season for the Ramblers.
Dawson will compete for one of the starting roles alongside Peterson.
'It felt good just being able to be on his side, being his teammate, watching what he can do, which is crazy,' Dawson said. ' I think we complement each other's game really, really well. Being able to shoot the ball as well as we can, I think it just opens up the floor for us so much.

'We already have that connection a little bit finding each other. I think it's going to be really special.'
Finding the right running mates alongside Peterson has been work in progress for Self and his staff.
Multiple players who were linked to KU through the transfer portal told The Star that Peterson recruited them, and Self discussed their fit alongside Peterson.
Dawson was no different. He's known about the former five-star recruit for a while. Dawson recalled seeing the battles between Peterson and BYU freshman AJ Dybantsa at the high school level.
Peterson and Dybantsa were ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the class of 2025 by 247Sports. Dawson also got to see a young Peterson firsthand at a basketball camp and came away impressed with his ability to get buckets.

As for what KU fans and his teammates can expect from Dawson?
'I'm just going to be that guy that's going to do whatever is asked of him,' Dawson said. 'If I gotta dive on a loose ball, I'll dive on it. If I (have) to hit an open 3 and sit in the corner (I'll do it.) If I (have) to guard the best player, I'll do whatever is asked of me.
'Knowing I'm that vet – I'm one of the vets on the team — I'll do whatever is asked of me.'

CHICAGO — After two days and three wins over their division rivals, the high-flying Cubs fell back to Earth like a Kyle Tucker fly ball to shallow center field. It wasn't Tucker's day on Thursday, and as it has so often been the case over the past few weeks, it wasn't the Cubs' day either. The Milwaukee Brewers scored a 4-1 win Thursday to finish off this five-game series. While the Cubs got the head-to-head season tiebreaker (they went 7-6 in the matchup) by winning the middle three games, the Brewers leave Wrigley Field with a seven-game lead in the NL Central, just one fewer than they came in with. The Cubs were close to making Milwaukee nervous. In related news, postseason ticket invoices were sent out Thursday morning. "We kind of held serve. We probably needed a little bit more. Rookie Owen Caissie looks like a more promising option at this moment. Despite what he's said, I wouldn't be surprised if Tucker goes on the IL for something soon. It doesn't make sense for either side to keep trotting him out there until he can hit with some authority. It's not like he's unlucky. The Cubs are embarking on a three-city road trip to Anaheim, San Francisco and Denver. They don't come back to Chicago until Sept. 1. Rest Tucker until then and hope for the best as the calendar turns. Of course, it's not just Tucker struggling. Several Cubs hitters need to break out. In the eighth with runners on the corners and two outs, Cubs manager Craig Counsell pinch-hit for Dansby Swanson, his high-paid, bottom-of-the-order shortstop. But Caissie, the star of the series, meekly grounded to first base to end the threat. That's how it went all game. They had five hits, all singles, and while they walked eight times, they went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. While the Cubs pitching more than held its own this series, they scored one total run in their two losses and 14 in their three wins. Thursday's starter Shota Imanaga made just one mistake, giving up a two-run homer to Brice Turang in the second inning. The Brewers' other two runs came on an Isaac Collins single in the eighth, just after Sal Frelick's fly ball right eluded a sliding Tucker. Mavericks' makes interesting Cooper Flagg decision originally appeared on The Sporting News It seems that the Dallas Mavericks are switching things up for Cooper Flagg this coming 2025-26 NBA season. Throughout Flagg's basketball career, he had always played in the forward position. He mainly played at the small forward position. However, it appears that the Mavericks are going to experiment with some new lineups, with Flagg playing at the guard position. According to Mavericks beat writer Mike Curtis, Dallas has officially added Flagg to their website as part of the main roster. What caught Curtis' attention was the fact that he was listed at the guard position. While his secondary position does say he'll play as a forward, it was intriguing to learn about the team's intention to let him play at the backcourt. Kyrie Irving's absence could be why Cooper Flagg will play guard While everyone is looking forward to the Dallas Mavericks' starting five of Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson, Cooper Flagg, Anthony Davis, and Dereck Lively II, it might take some time until we see them at full force. Last season, Irving tore his ACL, which sidelined him for the rest of the season. Based on the current timeline provided by sources, Irving is expected to make his return by January 2026. Having that in mind, we could theorize that Flagg's enlistment at the guard position could be due to Irving's absence. As of the time of this writing, the Mavericks have yet to reveal their intentions of having Flagg play in the backcourt. Whatever the case may be, we'll just have to wait and see if Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd can efficiently utilize the rookie in the backcourt.
